1 And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of the congregation, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying,1 In the year following that of the Israelites' departure from the land of Egypt, on the first day of the second month, the LORD said to Moses in the meeting tent in the desert of Sinai:
2 Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of their names, every male by their polls;2 "Take a census of the whole community of the Israelites, by clans and ancestral houses, registering each male individually.
3 From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies.3 You and Aaron shall enroll in companies all the men in Israel of twenty years or more who are fit for military service.
4 And with you there shall be a man of every tribe; every one head of the house of his fathers.4 "To assist you there shall be a man from each tribe, the head of his ancestral house.
5 And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of the tribe of Reuben; Elizur the son of Shedeur.5 These are the names of those who are to assist you: from Reuben: Elizur, son of Shedeur;
6 Of Simeon; Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.6 from Simeon: Shelumiel, son of Zurishaddai;
7 Of Judah; Nahshon the son of Amminadab.7 from Judah: Nahshon, son of Amminadab;
8 Of Issachar; Nethaneel the son of Zuar.8 from Issachar: Nethanel, son of Zuar;
9 Of Zebulun; Eliab the son of Helon.9 from Zebulun: Eliab, son of Helon;
10 Of the children of Joseph: of Ephraim; Elishama the son of Ammihud: of Manasseh; Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.10 from Ephraim: Elishama, son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh: Gamaliel, son of Pedahzur, for the descendants of Joseph;
11 Of Benjamin; Abidan the son of Gideoni.11 from Benjamin: Abidan, son of Gideoni;
12 Of Dan; Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.12 from Dan: Ahiezer, son of Ammishaddai;
13 Of Asher; Pagiel the son of Ocran.13 from Asher: Pagiel, son of Ochran;
14 Of Gad; Eliasaph the son of Deuel.14 from Gad: Eliasaph, son of Reuel;
15 Of Naphtali; Ahira the son of Enan.15 from Naphtali: Ahira, son of Enan."
16 These were the renowned of the congregation, princes of the tribes of their fathers, heads of thousands in Israel.16 These were councilors of the community, princes of their ancestral tribes, chiefs of the troops of Israel.
17 And Moses and Aaron took these men which are expressed by their names:17 So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated,
18 And they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls.18 and assembled the whole community on the first day of the second month. Every man of twenty years or more then declared his name and lineage according to clan and ancestral house,
19 As the LORD commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.19 as the LORD had commanded Moses. This is their census as taken in the desert of Sinai.
20 And the children of Reuben, Israel's eldest son, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;20 Of the descendants of Reuben, the first-born of Israel, registered by lineage in clans and ancestral houses: when all the males of twenty years or more who were fit for military service were polled,
21 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Reuben, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.21 forty-six thousand five hundred were enrolled in the tribe of Reuben.
22 Of the children of Simeon, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, those that were numbered of them, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;22 Of the descendants of Simeon, registered by lineage in clans and ancestral houses: when all the males of twenty years or more who were fit for military service were polled,
23 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.23 fifty-nine thousand three hundred were enrolled in the tribe of Simeon.
24 Of the children of Gad, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;24 Of the descendants of Gad, registered by lineage in clans and ancestral houses: when all the males of twenty years or more who were fit for military service were polled,
25 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Gad, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty.25 forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty were enrolled in the tribe of Gad.
26 Of the children of Judah, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;26 Of the descendants of Judah, registered by lineage in clans and ancestral houses: when all the males of twenty years or more who were fit for military service were polled,
27 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Judah, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.27 seventy-four thousand six hundred were enrolled in the tribe of Judah.
28 Of the children of Issachar, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;28 Of the descendants of Issachar, registered by lineage in clans and ancestral houses: when all the males of twenty years or more who were fit for military service were polled,
29 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred.29 fifty-four thousand four hundred were enrolled in the tribe of Issachar.
30 Of the children of Zebulun, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;30 Of the descendants of Zebulun, registered by lineage in clans and ancestral houses: when all the males of twenty years or more who were fit for military service were polled,
31 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.31 fifty-seven thousand four hundred were enrolled in the tribe of Zebulun.
32 Of the children of Joseph, namely, of the children of Ephraim, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;32 Of the descendants of Joseph-Of the descendants of Ephraim, registered by lineage in clans and ancestral houses: when all the males of twenty years or more who were fit for military service were polled,
33 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand and five hundred.33 forty thousand five hundred were enrolled in the tribe of Ephraim.
34 Of the children of Manasseh, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;34 Of the descendants of Manasseh, registered by lineage in clans and ancestral houses: when all the males of twenty years or more who were fit for military service were polled,
35 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred.35 thirty-two thousand two hundred were enrolled in the tribe of Manasseh.
36 Of the children of Benjamin, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;36 Of the descendants of Benjamin, registered by lineage in clans and ancestral houses: when all the males of twenty years or more who were fit for military service were polled,
37 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred.37 thirty-five thousand four hundred were enrolled in the tribe of Benjamin.
38 Of the children of Dan, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;38 Of the descendants of Dan, registered by lineage in clans and ancestral houses: when all the males of twenty years or more who were fit for military service were polled,
39 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Dan, were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred.39 sixty-two thousand seven hundred were enrolled in the tribe of Dan.
40 Of the children of Asher, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;40 Of the descendants of Asher, registered by lineage in clans and ancestral houses: when all the males of twenty years or more who were fit for military service were polled,
41 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Asher, were forty and one thousand and five hundred.41 forty-one thousand five hundred were enrolled in the tribe of Asher.
42 Of the children of Naphtali, throughout their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;42 Of the descendants of Naphtali, registered by lineage in clans and ancestral houses: when all the males of twenty years or more who were fit for military service were polled,
43 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.43 fifty-three thousand four hundred were enrolled in the tribe of Naphtali.
44 These are those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: each one was for the house of his fathers.44 It was these who were registered, each according to his ancestral house, in the census taken by Moses and Aaron and the twelve princes of Israel.
45 So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel;45 The total number of the Israelites of twenty years or more who were fit for military service, registered by ancestral houses,
46 Even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.46 was six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty.
47 But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.47 The Levites, however, were not registered by ancestral tribe with the others.
48 For the LORD had spoken unto Moses, saying,48 For the LORD had told Moses,
49 Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel:49 "The tribe of Levi alone you shall not enroll nor include in the census along with the other Israelites.
50 But thou shalt appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the vessels thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle.50 You are to give the Levites charge of the Dwelling of the commandments with all its equipment and all that belongs to it. It is they who shall carry the Dwelling with all its equipment and who shall be its ministers. They shall therefore camp around the Dwelling.
51 And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down: and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.51 When the Dwelling is to move on, the Levites shall take it down; when the Dwelling is to be pitched, it is the Levites who shall set it up. Any layman who comes near it shall be put to death.
52 And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, throughout their hosts.52 While the other Israelites shall camp by companies, each in his own division of the camp,
53 But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony.53 the Levites shall camp around the Dwelling of the commandments. Otherwise God's wrath will strike the Israelite community. The Levites, then, shall have charge of the Dwelling of the commandments."
54 And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.54 All this the Israelites fulfilled as the LORD had commanded Moses.
