Sirach 8

1 Strive not with a mighty man' lest thou fall into his hands.	1 Non contrastare con l'uomo potente, che tu non abbia a cader nelle sue mani!
2 Be not at variance with a rich man, lest he overweigh thee: for gold hath destroyed many, and perverted the hearts of kings.	2 Non contender con l'uomo ricco, che non t'intenti egli lite.
3 Strive not with a man that is full of tongue, and heap not wood upon his fire.	3 Molti invero ha rovinato l'oro e l'argento, ed è giunto a pervertire persino cuori di re.
4 Jest not with a rude man, lest thy ancestors be disgraced.	4 Non contrastare con un'uomo linguacciuto, e non accatastar legna sul fuoco di lui.
5 Reproach not a man that turneth from sin, but remember that we are all worthy of punishment.	5 Non trattar [scherzosamente] con un uomo rozzo, perchè non abbia a parlar male della tua progenie.
6 Dishonour not a man in his old age: for even some of us wax old.	6 Non disprczzare l'uomo che si ritrae dal peccato, nè l'oltraggiare; ricordati che tutti siam meritevoli di castigo.
7 Rejoice not over thy greatest enemy being dead, but remember that we die all.	7 Non mostrar disprezzo all'uomo nella sua vecchiaia, perchè anche tra noi c'è chi invecchia.
8 Despise not the discourse of the wise, but acquaint thyself with their proverbs: for of them thou shalt learn instruction, and how to serve great men with ease.	8 Non ti rallegrar di un tuo nemico ch'è morto; ricordati che tutti moriamo, nè vogliamo che altri ne goda.
9 Miss not the discourse of the elders: for they also learned of their fathers, and of them thou shalt learn understanding, and to give answer as need requireth.	9 Non sprezzare il racconto de' vecchi, e abbi famigliarità con le loro massime;
10 Kindle not the coals of a sinner, lest thou be burnt with the flame of his fire.	10 perchè da essi imparerai sapienza e assennatezza, e a servire i grandi senza biasimo.
11 Rise not up [in anger] at the presence of an injurious person, lest he lie in wait to entrap thee in thy words	11 Non trascurare il racconto de' vecchi, perchè essi stessi impararono, da loro padri:
12 Lend not unto him that is mightier than thyself; for if thou lendest him, count it but lost.	12 e tu imparerai da loro la saggezza, e a rispondere quando occorre.
13 Be not surety above thy power: for if thou be surety, take care to pay it.	13 Non accender i carboni del peccatore rimproverandolo, chè tu non abbia a restar bruciato dalla fiamma del suo fuoco.
14 Go not to law with a judge; for they will judge for him according to his honour.	14 Non resistere in faccia a un insolente, perchè non si metta come in agguato contro la tua bocca.
15 Travel not by the way with a bold fellow, lest he become grievous unto thee: for he will do according to his own will, and thou shalt perish with him through his folly.	15 Non dare In prestito a uno più potente di te, e se gli hai prestato qualcosa, tienla per perduta.
16 Strive not with an angry man, and go not with him into a solitary place: for blood is as nothing in his sight, and where there is no help, he will overthrow thee.	16 Non far cauzione al disopra delle tue forze, e fattala, considerati come uno che dovrà pagare.
17 Consult not with a fool; for he cannot keep counsel.	17 Non muover lite a un giudice, perchè conforme al suo avviso giudicheranno la sua causa.
18 Do no secret thing before a stranger; for thou knowest not what he will bring forth.	18 Non andar per via con un temerario, perchè non faccia pesar su te i suoi guai; se ne va infatti a seconda del suo capriccio, e per la sua follia tu perirai con lui.
19 Open not thine heart to every man, lest he requite thee with a shrewd turn.	19 Non far rissa con un furioso e non andar con lui per il deserto; perchè quasi un nulla è per lui il sangue, e dove non c'è [possibilità d'] aiuto, ti abbatterà.
	20 Non tener consiglio con gli stolti, perchè non possono amare se non quel che loro piace,
	21 Davanti ad un estraneo non far cosa secreta, perchè non sai quel ch'egli sarà per partorire.
	22 Non svelare il tuo cuore a ogni uomo, chè mai non te ne ricompensi e ti calunni.
