Sirach 8

KING JAMES BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Strive not with a mighty man' lest thou fall into his hands.	1 Ne lutte pas avec un grand, de peur de tomber entre ses mains.
2 Be not at variance with a rich man, lest he overweigh thee: for gold hath destroyed many, and perverted the hearts of kings.	2 Ne te querelle pas avec un riche, de peur qu'il n'ait plus de poids que toi; car l'or a perdu biendes gens et a fait fléchir le coeur des rois.
3 Strive not with a man that is full of tongue, and heap not wood upon his fire.	3 Ne dispute pas avec un beau parleur, ne mets pas de bois sur le feu.
4 Jest not with a rude man, lest thy ancestors be disgraced.	4 Ne plaisante pas avec un homme mal élevé, de peur de voir insulter tes ancêtres.
5 Reproach not a man that turneth from sin, but remember that we are all worthy of punishment.	5 Ne fais pas de reproches au pécheur repentant, souviens-toi que nous sommes tous coupables.
6 Dishonour not a man in his old age: for even some of us wax old.	6 Ne méprise pas un homme avancé en âge, car peut-être nous aussi deviendrons vieux.
7 Rejoice not over thy greatest enemy being dead, but remember that we die all.	7 Ne te réjouis pas de la mort d'un homme, souviens-toi que tous nous devons mourir.
8 Despise not the discourse of the wise, but acquaint thyself with their proverbs: for of them thou shalt learn instruction, and how to serve great men with ease.	8 Ne méprise pas le discours des sages et reviens souvent à leurs maximes; car c'est d'eux quetu apprendras la doctrine et l'art de servir les grands.
9 Miss not the discourse of the elders: for they also learned of their fathers, and of them thou shalt learn understanding, and to give answer as need requireth.	9 Ne fais pas fi du discours des vieillards, car eux-mêmes ont été à l'école de leurs parents; c'estd'eux que tu apprendras la prudence et l'art de répondre à point nommé.
10 Kindle not the coals of a sinner, lest thou be burnt with the flame of his fire.	10 Ne mets pas le feu aux charbons du pécheur de crainte de te brûler à sa flamme.
11 Rise not up [in anger] at the presence of an injurious person, lest he lie in wait to entrap thee in thy words	11 Ne te laisse pas pousser à bout par l'homme coléreux, ce serait un piège tendu devant teslèvres.
12 Lend not unto him that is mightier than thyself; for if thou lendest him, count it but lost.	12 Ne prête pas à un homme plus fort que toi: si tu prêtes, tiens la chose pour perdue.
13 Be not surety above thy power: for if thou be surety, take care to pay it.	13 Ne te porte pas caution au-delà de tes moyens: si tu t'es porté caution, sois prêt à payer.
14 Go not to law with a judge; for they will judge for him according to his honour.	14 N'aie pas de procès avec un juge, car la sentence sera rendue en sa faveur.
15 Travel not by the way with a bold fellow, lest he become grievous unto thee: for he will do according to his own will, and thou shalt perish with him through his folly.	15 Ne te mets pas en route avec un aventurier, de peur qu'il ne s'impose à toi: car il n'en faitqu'à sa tête et sa folie te perdra avec lui.
16 Strive not with an angry man, and go not with him into a solitary place: for blood is as nothing in his sight, and where there is no help, he will overthrow thee.	16 Ne te dispute pas avec un homme coléreux, ne t'engage pas avec lui dans un lieu désert, carle sang ne compte pas à ses yeux et là où il n'y a pas de secours il se jettera sur toi.
17 Consult not with a fool; for he cannot keep counsel.	17 Ne prends pas un sot pour confident, car il ne saurait garder ton secret.
18 Do no secret thing before a stranger; for thou knowest not what he will bring forth.	18 Devant un étranger, ne fais rien qui doive rester secret, car tu ne sais pas ce qu'il peutinventer.
19 Open not thine heart to every man, lest he requite thee with a shrewd turn.	19 N'ouvre pas ton coeur à n'importe qui et ne prétends pas obtenir ses bonnes grâces.
