Sirach 8

1 Strive not with a mighty man' lest thou fall into his hands.	1 Non litigare con l'uomopotente, se non ti vuoi mettere al pericolo di cadere nelle sue mani.
2 Be not at variance with a rich man, lest he overweigh thee: for gold hath destroyed many, and perverted the hearts of kings.	2 Non disputare con l'uomo ricco, se non vuoi che faccia contro di te un processo;
3 Strive not with a man that is full of tongue, and heap not wood upon his fire.	3 perchè l'oro e l'argento han rovinato molti e giungono perfino a pervertire il cuore del re.
4 Jest not with a rude man, lest thy ancestors be disgraced.	4 Non litigare col linguacciuto, non accatastar legna sopra il suo fuoco.
5 Reproach not a man that turneth from sin, but remember that we are all worthy of punishment.	5 Non frequentare l'ignorante, affinchè egli non parli male della tua stirpe.
6 Dishonour not a man in his old age: for even some of us wax old.	6 Non disprezzare colui che s'è allontanato dal peccato, non gli far dei rimproveri; ricordati che siamo tutti degni di castigo.
7 Rejoice not over thy greatest enemy being dead, but remember that we die all.	7 Non disprezzare l'uomo nella sua vecchiaia, perchè sono dei nostri quelli che invecchiano.
8 Despise not the discourse of the wise, but acquaint thyself with their proverbs: for of them thou shalt learn instruction, and how to serve great men with ease.	8 Non ti rallegrare per la morte del tuo nemico, sapendo che tutti si muore e che non vogliamo essere oggetto di riso.
9 Miss not the discourse of the elders: for they also learned of their fathers, and of them thou shalt learn understanding, and to give answer as need requireth.	9 Non di sprezzare i racconti dei vecchi saggi, ma abbi famigliari le loro massime;
10 Kindle not the coals of a sinner, lest thou be burnt with the flame of his fire.	10 perché da loro tu imparerai la sapienza e gli insegnamenti dell'intelligenza, e a servire senza rimproveri ai grandi.
11 Rise not up [in anger] at the presence of an injurious person, lest he lie in wait to entrap thee in thy words	11 Non ti lasciar fuggire i racconti dei vecchi, perchè essi li hanno sentiti dai loro padri.
12 Lend not unto him that is mightier than thyself; for if thou lendest him, count it but lost.	12 Da essi infatti imparerai la prudenza e a rispondere quando è necessario.
13 Be not surety above thy power: for if thou be surety, take care to pay it.	13 Non incendiare i carboni dei peccatori, rimproverandoli, per non esser bruciato dalla fiamma dei loro peccati.
14 Go not to law with a judge; for they will judge for him according to his honour.	14 Non resistere in faccia all'insolente, chè non stia in agguato contro le tue parole.
15 Travel not by the way with a bold fellow, lest he become grievous unto thee: for he will do according to his own will, and thou shalt perish with him through his folly.	15 Non prestare ad uno più potente di te: se gli hai prestato qualche cosa, considerala come perduta.
16 Strive not with an angry man, and go not with him into a solitary place: for blood is as nothing in his sight, and where there is no help, he will overthrow thee.	16 Non ti far mallevadore sopra le tue forze; se ti sei già fatto, pensa a come pagare.
17 Consult not with a fool; for he cannot keep counsel.	17 Non giudicar contro il giudice, perchè egli giudica secondo giustizia.
18 Do no secret thing before a stranger; for thou knowest not what he will bring forth.	18 Non t'accompagnare in viaggio con un temerario, se non vuoi che egli scarichi sopra te i suoi mali, perchè egli va a seconda dei suoi capricci, e perirai con lui per la sua follia.
19 Open not thine heart to every man, lest he requite thee with a shrewd turn.	19 Non venire a contesa con un collerico, non andare nel deserto con un temerario, perchè il sangue è per lui un niente e quando non c'è chi t'aiuti ti spaccerà.
	20 Non prender consigli dagli stolti, perchè non possono amare se non quello che piace a loro.
	21 Non tener consiglio davanti ad un estraneo, chè non sai quali cose metterà fuori.
	22 Non aprire ad ogni uomo il tuo cuore, se non vuoi testimonianze di falsa amicizia, e poi ingiurie.
