Sirach 31

KING JAMES BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Watching for riches consumeth the flesh, and the care thereof driveth away sleep.	1 Les insomnies que cause la richesse sont épuisantes, les soucis qu'elle apporte ôtent lesommeil.
2 Watching care will not let a man slumber, as a sore disease breaketh sleep,	2 Les soucis de la journée empêchent de dormir, une grave maladie éloigne le sommeil.
3 The rich hath great labour in gathering riches together; and when he resteth, he is filled with his delicates.	3 Le riche travaille à amasser des biens et lorsqu'il s'arrête, c'est pour se rassasier de plaisirs;
4 The poor laboureth in his poor estate; and when he leaveth off, he is still needy.	4 le pauvre travaille n'ayant pas de quoi vivre et dès qu'il s'arrête il tombe dans la misère.
5 He that loveth gold shall not be justified, and he that followeth corruption shall have enough thereof.	5 Celui qui aime l'argent n'échappe guère au péché, celui qui poursuit le gain en sera la dupe.
6 Gold hath been the ruin of many, and their destruction was present.	6 Beaucoup ont été victimes de l'or, leur ruine était inévitable.
7 It is a stumblingblock unto them that sacrifice unto it, and every fool shall be taken therewith.	7 Car c'est un piège pour ceux qui lui sacrifient et tous les insensés s'y laissent prendre.
8 Blessed is the rich that is found without blemish, and hath not gone after gold.	8 Bienheureux le riche qui se garde sans tache et qui ne court pas après l'or.
9 Who is he? and we will call him blessed: for wonderful things hath he done among his people.	9 Qui est-il, que nous le félicitions? Car il fait des miracles dans son peuple.
10 Who hath been tried thereby, and found perfect? then let him glory. Who might offend, and hath not offended? or done evil, and hath not done it?	10 Qui a subi cette épreuve et s'est révélé parfait? Ce lui sera un sujet de gloire. Qui a pupécher et n'a pas péché, faire le mal et ne l'a pas fait?
11 His goods shall be established, and the congregation shall declare his alms.	11 Ses biens seront consolidés et l'assemblée publiera ses bienfaits.
12 If thou sit at a bountiful table, be not greedy upon it, and say not, There is much meat on it.	12 As-tu pris place à une table somptueuse? N'ouvre pas la bouche pour la vanter, ne dis pas:"Quelle abondance!"
13 Remember that a wicked eye is an evil thing: and what is created more wicked than an eye? therefore it weepeth upon every occasion.	13 Souviens-toi que c'est mal d'avoir un oeil avide: y a-t-il pire créature que l'oeil? Aussipleure-t-il à tout propos.
14 Stretch not thine hand whithersoever it looketh, and thrust it not with him into the dish.	14 Là où ton hôte regarde, n'étends pas la main, ne te jette pas sur le plat en même temps quelui.
15 Judge not thy neighbour by thyself: and be discreet in every point.	15 Juge le prochain d'après toi-même et en toute chose sois réfléchi.
16 Eat as it becometh a man, those things which are set before thee; and devour note, lest thou be hated.	16 Mange en homme bien élevé ce qui t'est présenté, ne joue pas des mâchoires, ne te rendspas odieux.
17 Leave off first for manners' sake; and be not unsatiable, lest thou offend.	17 Arrête-toi le premier par bonne éducation, ne sois pas glouton, de crainte d'un affront.
18 When thou sittest among many, reach not thine hand out first of all.	18 Si tu es à table en nombreuse compagnie, ne te sers pas avant les autres.
19 A very little is sufficient for a man well nurtured, and he fetcheth not his wind short upon his bed.	19 Qu'il suffit de peu à un homme bien élevé! aussi, une fois couché, il respire librement.
20 Sound sleep cometh of moderate eating: he riseth early, and his wits are with him: but the pain of watching, and choler, and pangs of the belly, are with an unsatiable man.	20 A régime sobre, bon sommeil, on se lève tôt, on a l'esprit libre. L'insomnie, lesvomissements, les coliques, voilà pour l'homme intempérant.
21 And if thou hast been forced to eat, arise, go forth, vomit, and thou shalt have rest.	21 Si tu as été forcé de trop manger, lève-toi, va vomir et tu seras soulagé.
22 My son, hear me, and despise me not, and at the last thou shalt find as I told thee: in all thy works be quick, so shall there no sickness come unto thee.	22 Ecoute-moi, mon fils, sans me mépriser: plus tard tu comprendras mes paroles. Dans toutce que tu fais sois modéré et jamais la maladie ne t'atteindra.
23 Whoso is liberal of his meat, men shall speak well of him; and the report of his good housekeeping will be believed.	23 On vante hautement un hôte fastueux et l'éloge de sa munificence est durable.
24 But against him that is a niggard of his meat the whole city shall murmur; and the testimonies of his niggardness shall not be doubted of.	24 Mais un hôte mesquin est décrié dans la ville et l'on cite les traits de son avarice.
25 Shew not thy valiantness in wine; for wine hath destroyed many.	25 Avec le vin ne fais pas le brave, car le vin a perdu bien des gens.
26 The furnace proveth the edge by dipping: so doth wine the hearts of the proud by drunkeness.	26 La fournaise éprouve la trempe de l'acier, ainsi le vin éprouve les coeurs dans un tournoi defanfarons.
27 Wine is as good as life to a man, if it be drunk moderately: what life is then to a man that is without wine? for it was made to make men glad.	27 Le vin c'est la vie pour l'homme, quand on en boit modérément. Quelle vie mène-t-on privéde vin? Il a été créé pour la joie des hommes.
28 Wine measurably drunk and in season bringeth gladness of the heart, and cheerfulness of the mind:	28 Gaîté du coeur et joie de l'âme, voilà le vin qu'on boit quand il faut et à sa suffisance.
29 But wine drunken with excess maketh bitterness of the mind, with brawling and quarrelling.	29 Amertume de l'âme, voilà le vin qu'on boit avec excès, par passion et par défi.
30 Drunkenness increaseth the rage of a fool till he offend: it diminisheth strength, and maketh wounds.	30 L'ivresse excite la fureur de l'insensé pour sa perte, elle diminue sa force et provoque lescoups.
31 Rebuke not thy neighbour at the wine, and despise him not in his mirth: give him no despiteful words, and press not upon him with urging him [to drink.]	31 Au cours d'un banquet ne provoque pas ton voisin et ne te moque pas de lui s'il est gai, nelui adresse pas de reproche, ne l'agace pas en lui réclamant de l'argent.
