Sirach 29

1 He that is merciful will lend unto his neighbour; and he that strengtheneth his hand keepeth the commandments.	1 Chi è misericordioso presta al suo prossimo, e chi ha mano generosa osserva i comandamenti.
2 Lend to thy neighbour in time of his need, and pay thou thy neighbour again in due season.	2 Presta al tuo prossimo quando ha bisogno, e restituisci al prossimo a suo tempo.
3 Keep thy word, and deal faithfully with him, and thou shalt always find the thing that is necessary for thee.	3 Mantieni la parola e agisci lealmente con lui, e troverai in ogni tempo quello che ti bisogna.
4 Many, when a thing was lent them, reckoned it to be found, and put them to trouble that helped them.	4 Molti tennero come roba trovata quella presa in prestito, e diedero molestie a chi li aveva aiutati.
5 Till he hath received, he will kiss a man's hand; and for his neighbour's money he will speak submissly: but when he should repay, he will prolong the time, and return words of grief, and complain of the time.	5 Finché ricevono baciano le mani a chi loro dà, promettono con voce sommessa,
6 If he prevail, he shall hardly receive the half, and he will count as if he had found it: if not, he hath deprived him of his money, and he hath gotten him an enemy without cause: he payeth him with cursings and railings; and for honour he will pay him disgrace.	6 ma venuto il tempo della restituzione, chiedono tempo, dicon cose noiose, mormorano e dan la colpa al tempo.
7 Many therefore have refused to lend for other men's ill dealing, fearing to be defrauded.	7 Se può pagare, fa delle difficoltà; renderà appena la metà di quanto deve, e (il creditore) dovrà contarlo come danaro trovato;
8 Yet have thou patience with a man in poor estate, and delay not to shew him mercy.	8 altrimenti lo priva del suo, e acquista gratuitamente un nemico,
9 Help the poor for the commandment's sake, and turn him not away because of his poverty.	9 e lo paga con ingiurie e maledizioni, e invece di onore e benefizi gli rende insulti.
10 Lose thy money for thy brother and thy friend, and let it not rust under a stone to be lost.	10 Molti non prestano, non per cattivo cuore, ma perchè temono d'essere ingiustamente frodati.
11 Lay up thy treasure according to the commandments of the most High, and it shall bring thee more profit than gold.	11 Non ostante, sii d'animo generoso verso il meschino, e non gli fare aspettare la tua elemosina.
12 Shut up alms in thy storehouses: and it shall deliver thee from all affliction.	12 A causa del comandamento assisti il povero, e non lo rimandare a mani vuote nel suo bisogno.
13 It shall fight for thee against thine enemies better than a mighty shield and strong spear.	13 Perdi il danaro per amor del fratello e del tuo amico, e non lo seppellire senza profitto sotto una pietra.
14 An honest man is surety for his neighbour: but he that is impudent will forsake him.	14 Impiega i tuoi tesori secondo i precetti dell'Altissimo, e ciò ti gioverà più dell'oro.
15 Forget not the friendship of thy surety, for he hath given his life for thee.	15 Nascondi l'elemosina nel seno del povero, ed essa pregherà per te contro ogni male.
16 A sinner will overthrow the good estate of his surety:	16 Meglio di saldo scudo e di lancia essa combatterà contro il tuo nemico.
17 And he that is of an unthankful mind will leave him [in danger] that delivered him.	17 .
18 Suretiship hath undone many of good estate, and shaken them as a wave of the sea: mighty men hath it driven from their houses, so that they wandered among strange nations.	18 .
19 A wicked man transgressing the commandments of the Lord shall fall into suretiship: and he that undertaketh and followeth other men's business for gain shall fall into suits.	19 L'uomo onesto si fa mallevadore pel suo prossimo, ma chi ha perduto ogni vergogna lo abbandona a se stesso.
20 Help thy neighbour according to thy power, and beware that thou thyself fall not into the same.	20 Non dimenticare il benefìzio del mallevadore, perchè ha esposta per te la sua vita.
21 The chief thing for life is water, and bread, and clothing, and an house to cover shame.	21 Il peccatore e l'immondo fuggono il loro mallevadore.
22 Better is the life of a poor man in a mean cottage, than delicate fare in another man's house.	22 Iò peccatore s'attribuisce i beni del suo mallevadore, e l'ingrato di cuore abbandonerà chi lo ha liberato.
23 Be it little or much, hold thee contented, that thou hear not the reproach of thy house.	23 Un uomo si fa mallevadore pel suo prossimo, e quello, mancandogli di ogni riguardo, l'abbandonerà.
24 For it is a miserable life to go from house to house: for where thou art a stranger, thou darest not open thy mouth.	24 Malleverie spropositate han rovinato molti che andavan bene, e li han messi sottosopra come tempesta di mare.
25 Thou shalt entertain, and feast, and have no thanks: moreover thou shalt hear bitter words:	25 Hanno aggirato uominipotenti, li han costretti a fuggire, ad andare raminghi fra genti straniere.
26 Come, thou stranger, and furnish a table, and feed me of that thou hast ready.	26 Il peccatore che trasgredisce il comandamento di Dio s'impegnerà in malleverie rovinose, e chi tenta di far molte cose, cadrà sotto la giustizia.
27 Give place, thou stranger, to an honourable man; my brother cometh to be lodged, and I have need of mine house.	27 Aiuta il prossimo secondo il tuo potere, e veglia sopra te stesso per non cadere.
28 These things are grievous to a man of understanding; the upbraiding of houseroom, and reproaching of the lender.	28 Il necessario alla vita umana è l'acqua, il pane, il vestito e la casa per coprire la nudità.
	29 Val più il vitto del povero sotto un tetto di tavole, che splendidi banchetti fuori di casa, senza domicilio.
	30 Contentati del poco come del molto, e non ti sentirai rinfacciare d'esser forestiero.
	31 L'è una brutta vita quella d'andare di casa in casa: dove uno è ospite non potrà agire con libertà, nè aprir bocca.
	32 Sarà ospite, darà da mangiare e da bere a gente in grata, e dopo questo sentirà amare parole:
	33 « Su via, ospite, ammannisci la tavola, con quello che hai teco dài da mangiare agli altri.
	34 Ritirati; c'è da fare onore ai miei amici, ho bisogno della mia casa: ricevo come ospite mio fratello ».
	35 Queste cose son gravi per un uomo che ha sentimento: i rimproveri del padrone di casa e le ingiurie del creditore.
