1 He that is merciful will lend unto his neighbour; and he that strengtheneth his hand keepeth the commandments.	1 Qui connaît la compassion, prête à son prochain, celui qui lui vient en aide observe les commandements.
2 Lend to thy neighbour in time of his need, and pay thou thy neighbour again in due season.	2 Prête à ton prochain s’il est dans le besoin; de ton côté, rembourse ton prochain au temps fixé.
3 Keep thy word, and deal faithfully with him, and thou shalt always find the thing that is necessary for thee.	3 Tiens parole, sois loyal avec ton prochain, et en tout temps tu trouveras ce qu’il te faut.
4 Many, when a thing was lent them, reckoned it to be found, and put them to trouble that helped them.	4 Pour beaucoup, le prêt qu’on leur a fait n’est qu’une aubaine; ils mettront en difficulté ceux qui les ont aidés.
5 Till he hath received, he will kiss a man's hand; and for his neighbour's money he will speak submissly: but when he should repay, he will prolong the time, and return words of grief, and complain of the time.	5 Tant qu’on n’a pas reçu, on baise les mains du prochain, on se fait humble en pensant à ce qu’il a; mais au moment de rendre on demande un sursis, on paye en paroles déplaisantes, on gémit sur la dureté des temps.
6 If he prevail, he shall hardly receive the half, and he will count as if he had found it: if not, he hath deprived him of his money, and he hath gotten him an enemy without cause: he payeth him with cursings and railings; and for honour he will pay him disgrace.	6 Même si on peut rembourser, le prêteur aura de la chance s’il en récupère la moitié. Dans le cas contraire, il s’est fait prendre son argent et il n’y a gagné qu’un ennemi; celui-ci le paiera en malédictions et insultes, avec du mépris au lieu de reconnaissance.
7 Many therefore have refused to lend for other men's ill dealing, fearing to be defrauded.	7 Bien des gens refusent de prêter, non par méchanceté, mais par peur d’être dépouillés sans raison.
8 Yet have thou patience with a man in poor estate, and delay not to shew him mercy.	8 Sois pourtant généreux envers le pauvre, ne le laisse pas attendre ton aumône.
9 Help the poor for the commandment's sake, and turn him not away because of his poverty.	9 Selon le commandement, prends soin de l’indigent; vois quel est son besoin, et ne le renvoie pas les mains vides.
10 Lose thy money for thy brother and thy friend, and let it not rust under a stone to be lost.	10 Perds ton argent pour un frère ou un ami, plutôt que de le laisser rouiller sous une pierre en pure perte.
11 Lay up thy treasure according to the commandments of the most High, and it shall bring thee more profit than gold.	11 Place ton trésor selon les commandements du Très-Haut, cela te sera plus utile que de l’or.
12 Shut up alms in thy storehouses: and it shall deliver thee from all affliction.	12 Remplis tes greniers de tes générosités, elles te garderont du malheur;
13 It shall fight for thee against thine enemies better than a mighty shield and strong spear.	13 face à l’ennemi elles combattront pour toi, mieux qu’un solide bouclier ou une lourde lance.
14 An honest man is surety for his neighbour: but he that is impudent will forsake him.	14 L’homme de bien se porte garant pour son prochain; il faudrait avoir perdu toute honte pour l’abandonner.
15 Forget not the friendship of thy surety, for he hath given his life for thee.	15 N’oublie pas les services de ton garant; il s’est risqué pour toi.
16 A sinner will overthrow the good estate of his surety:	16 Mais le pécheur gaspille les biens de son répondant; c’est un ingrat, il oublie celui qui l’a sauvé.
17 And he that is of an unthankful mind will leave him [in danger] that delivered him.	17 Une caution a ruiné bien des gens à l’aise, elle les a secoués comme l’écume des mers.
18 Suretiship hath undone many of good estate, and shaken them as a wave of the sea: mighty men hath it driven from their houses, so that they wandered among strange nations.	18 Elle a forcé des hommes puissants à s’expatrier, faisant d’eux des errants en des nations étrangères.
19 A wicked man transgressing the commandments of the Lord shall fall into suretiship: and he that undertaketh and followeth other men's business for gain shall fall into suits.	19 Le pécheur se porte garant quand il pense en tirer profit, mais ce sont des procès qu’il va récolter.
20 Help thy neighbour according to thy power, and beware that thou thyself fall not into the same.	20 Viens en aide à ton prochain autant que tu le peux, mais veille à ne pas tomber toi-même.
21 The chief thing for life is water, and bread, and clothing, and an house to cover shame.	21 L’indispensable pour vivre, c’est l’eau, le pain, le vêtement, et une maison pour s’abriter.
22 Better is the life of a poor man in a mean cottage, than delicate fare in another man's house.	22 Mieux vaut vivre comme un pauvre sous ses planches que manger comme un prince chez des étrangers.
23 Be it little or much, hold thee contented, that thou hear not the reproach of thy house.	23 Accommode-toi du peu ou du beaucoup que tu as: cela vaut mieux que d’entendre les reproches de quelqu’un qui t’héberge.
24 For it is a miserable life to go from house to house: for where thou art a stranger, thou darest not open thy mouth.	24 C’est une triste vie que d’aller de maison en maison; là où tu es, tu n’oses ouvrir la bouche.
25 Thou shalt entertain, and feast, and have no thanks: moreover thou shalt hear bitter words:	25 Tu as beau être celui qui donne à manger et à boire, tu entends les paroles amères d’un ingrat:
26 Come, thou stranger, and furnish a table, and feed me of that thou hast ready.	26 “Viens ici, l’étranger, prépare la table; si tu as quelque chose, donne-moi à manger!”
27 Give place, thou stranger, to an honourable man; my brother cometh to be lodged, and I have need of mine house.	27 Ou encore: “Va-t’en, l’étranger, c’était inattendu! Mon frère vient en visite et j’ai besoin de la maison!”
28 These things are grievous to a man of understanding; the upbraiding of houseroom, and reproaching of the lender.	28 Quand on se respecte, c’est dur de s’entendre reprocher l’hospitalité et d’être traité comme un débiteur.
