Sirach 29

1 He that is merciful will lend unto his neighbour; and he that strengtheneth his hand keepeth the commandments.	1 - Chi pratica la misericordia, impresta al suo prossimo e chi gli dà una mano, osserva i comandamenti.
2 Lend to thy neighbour in time of his need, and pay thou thy neighbour again in due season.	2 Presta al tuo prossimo nel tempo del suo bisogno, e a tua volta restituisci al prossimo a tempo dovuto.
3 Keep thy word, and deal faithfully with him, and thou shalt always find the thing that is necessary for thee.	3 Mantieni la parola e diportati fedelmente con lui, e in ogni tempo troverai ciò che ti occorre.
4 Many, when a thing was lent them, reckoned it to be found, and put them to trouble that helped them.	4 Per molti un imprestito è come roba trovata, e procacciali noie a chi gli ha aiutati.
5 Till he hath received, he will kiss a man's hand; and for his neighbour's money he will speak submissly: but when he should repay, he will prolong the time, and return words of grief, and complain of the time.	5 Finché ricevono, bacian la mano di chi dà, e in promesse umilian la voce;
6 If he prevail, he shall hardly receive the half, and he will count as if he had found it: if not, he hath deprived him of his money, and he hath gotten him an enemy without cause: he payeth him with cursings and railings; and for honour he will pay him disgrace.	6 ma al momento di restituire, [ognuno] chiede tempo, e dà parole di rincrescimento e di rammarico, e incolpa i tempi.
7 Many therefore have refused to lend for other men's ill dealing, fearing to be defrauded.	7 E s'è in grado di restituire, ricalcitra e rende appena la metà della somma, e [il creditore] può considerar [quel poco] come tanto di trovato.
8 Yet have thou patience with a man in poor estate, and delay not to shew him mercy.	8 Se poi non è [in grado], lo defrauda del suo danaro, e quegli l'avrà come nemico, gratuitamente.
9 Help the poor for the commandment's sake, and turn him not away because of his poverty.	9 E con ingiurie e maledizioni lo ripagherà, e in luogo di onori e benefici gli renderà oltraggio.
10 Lose thy money for thy brother and thy friend, and let it not rust under a stone to be lost.	10 Molti non danno in prestito non già per malvagità, ma [perchè] temono d'esser defraudati gratuitamente.
11 Lay up thy treasure according to the commandments of the most High, and it shall bring thee more profit than gold.	11 Tuttavia verso il tapino sii generoso d'animo, e non lo tirare in lungo nel [fargli] limosina.
12 Shut up alms in thy storehouses: and it shall deliver thee from all affliction.	12 A motivo del comandamento soccorri il povero, e per la sua indigenza non lo rimandare a mani vuote.
13 It shall fight for thee against thine enemies better than a mighty shield and strong spear.	13 Perdi pure il danaro per il tuo fratello e amico, e non lo nasconder sotto una pietra [perchè s'arrugginisca e vada] In malora.
14 An honest man is surety for his neighbour: but he that is impudent will forsake him.	14 Disponi del tuo tesoro secondo i comandamenti dell'Altissimo, e ti gioverà più che l'oro.
15 Forget not the friendship of thy surety, for he hath given his life for thee.	15 Chiudi la limosina nel cuor del povero, ed essa t'impetrerà [la liberazione] da ogni male.
16 A sinner will overthrow the good estate of his surety:	16 Meglio d'uno scudo potente e di [robusta] lancia, essa combatterà per te contro il tuo nemico.
17 And he that is of an unthankful mind will leave him [in danger] that delivered him.	17 -
18 Suretiship hath undone many of good estate, and shaken them as a wave of the sea: mighty men hath it driven from their houses, so that they wandered among strange nations.	18 -
19 A wicked man transgressing the commandments of the Lord shall fall into suretiship: and he that undertaketh and followeth other men's business for gain shall fall into suits.	19 L'uomo dabbene presta mallevadoria per il suo prossimo; e chi ha perduto il pudore, l'abbandona a se stesso.
20 Help thy neighbour according to thy power, and beware that thou thyself fall not into the same.	20 La cortesia del mallevadore non la dimenticare, chè per te ha esposto se stesso;
21 The chief thing for life is water, and bread, and clothing, and an house to cover shame.	21 è il peccatore e l'immondo che fugge il garante.
22 Better is the life of a poor man in a mean cottage, than delicate fare in another man's house.	22 I beni del garante si appropria il peccatore, e l'ingrato di cuore abbandona il suo liberatore.
23 Be it little or much, hold thee contented, that thou hear not the reproach of thy house.	23 Un uomo si fa garante del suo prossimo, e questi perduto [ogni] pudore, l'abbandona!
24 For it is a miserable life to go from house to house: for where thou art a stranger, thou darest not open thy mouth.	24 La mallevadoria imprudente rovinò molti benestanti, e li travolse come un'ondata di mare.
25 Thou shalt entertain, and feast, and have no thanks: moreover thou shalt hear bitter words:	25 Uomini facoltosi cacciò lontano [dalle proprie case], e andaron vagando tra genti straniere.
26 Come, thou stranger, and furnish a table, and feed me of that thou hast ready.	26 Il peccatore che trasgredisce il comandamento del Signore incapperà in mallevadorie disastrose, e chi cerca far molti affari, incapperà in condanne.
27 Give place, thou stranger, to an honourable man; my brother cometh to be lodged, and I have need of mine house.	27 Soccorri il prossimo a seconda delle tue forze, e bada a te stesso, che tu non abbia a cadere.
28 These things are grievous to a man of understanding; the upbraiding of houseroom, and reproaching of the lender.	28 La prima cosa per la vita dell'uomo è l'acqua e il pane e [poi] le vesti e una casa per coprir ciò ch'è vergogna.
	29 Meglio il vitto del povero sotto un tetto di tavole, che i sontuosi banchetti in casa d'altri, quando non s'ha la propria.
	30 Contentati del poco come del molto, e non udrai rinfacciarti d'essere un estraneo.
	31 Triste cosa l'andar peregrinando di casa in casa e là dove uno è ospite, non osa muoversi liberamente, non apre bocca.
	32 E' ospite e darà da mangiare e da bere senz'averne un grazie, e udrà per giunta parole amare.
	33 « Entra, il forestiero, e apparecchia la mensa, e se hai qualcosa alla mano, dà da mangiare [a me] e agli altri ».
	34 « Vattene, [o forestiero], lontano da questo splendore riservato ai miei amici; ho bisogno della casa, m'è giunto ospite un mio fratello».
	35 Dure cose son queste per un uomo che ha sentimento: il rimprovero del [padroni di casa e il rimbrotto di chi ha dato in prestito.
