Sirach 16

1 Desire not a multitude of unprofitable children, neither delight in ungodly sons.	1 Ne mets pas ton bonheur dans des fils impies, s'ils se multiplient, et ne te réjouis pas à leur sujet, s'ils n'ont pas la crainte de Dieu.
2 Though they multiply, rejoice not in them, except the fear of the Lord be with them.	2 Ne t'appuis pas sur leur vie, et ne compte pas sur leurs travaux.
3 Trust not thou in their life, neither respect their multitude: for one that is just is better than a thousand; and better it is to die without children, than to have them that are ungodly.	3 Car un seul enfant qui craint Dieu vaut mieux que mille fils impies,
4 For by one that hath understanding shall the city be replenished: but the kindred of the wicked shall speedily become desolate.	4 et il est plus avantageux de mourir sans enfants que de laisser des fils impies.
5 Many such things have I seen with mine eyes, and mine ear hath heard greater things than these.	5 Un seul homme de sens peuplera une contrée, et un peuple d'impies sera délaissé.
6 In the congregation of the ungodly shall a fire be kindled; and in a rebellious nation wrath is set on fire.	6 Mes yeux en ont vu beaucoup d'exemples, et mes oreilles en ont entendu de plus grands encore.
7 He was not pacified toward the old giants, who fell away in the strength of their foolishness.	7 Le feu s'allumera dans l'assemblée des méchants, et la colère s'embrasera contre la nation incrédule.
8 Neither spared he the place where Lot sojourned, but abhorred them for their pride.	8 Les anciens géants n'ont pas supplié pour leurs péchés; ils ont été détruits pour s'être confiés en leur puissance.
9 He pitied not the people of perdition, who were taken away in their sins:	9 Dieu n'a pas épargné la ville où Lot demeurait comme étranger, et Il en a détesté les habitants à cause de l'insolence de leurs paroles.
10 Nor the six hundred thousand footmen, who were gathered together in the hardness of their hearts.	10 Il n'a pas eu pitié d'eux, et Il a exterminé toute cette nation qui s'enorgueillissait dans ses péchés.
11 And if there be one stiffnecked among the people, it is marvel if he escape unpunished: for mercy and wrath are with him; he is mighty to forgive, and to pour out displeasure.	11 Il a perdu de même les six cents mille fantassins qui avaient conspiré dans la dureté de leur coeur; et si un seul fût resté opiniâtre, c'eût été une merveille qu'il demeurât impuni.
12 As his mercy is great, so is his correction also: he judgeth a man according to his works	12 Car la miséricorde et l'indignation sont toujours avec Lui. La supplication est puissante sur Lui, et Il répand néanmoins Sa colère.
13 The sinner shall not escape with his spoils: and the patience of the godly shall not be frustrate.	13 Ses châtiments égalent Sa miséricorde, et Il juge l'homme selon ses oeuvres.
14 Make way for every work of mercy: for every man shall find according to his works.	14 Le pécheur n'échappera pas avec ses rapines, et l'attente de celui qui exerce la miséricorde ne sera pas longtemps prolongée.
15 The Lord hardened Pharaoh, that he should not know him, that his powerful works might be known to the world.	15 Toute action de miséricorde procurera à chacun une place selon le mérite de ses oeuvres, et selon la prudence qu'il manifestera en ce lieu d'exil.
16 His mercy is manifest to every creature; and he hath separated his light from the darkness with an adamant.	16 Ne dis point: Je me déroberai à Dieu; et qui se souviendra de moi du haut du ciel?
17 Say not thou, I will hide myself from the Lord: shall any remember me from above? I shall not be remembered among so many people: for what is my soul among such an infinite number of creatures?	17 Je ne serai point reconnu parmi un si grand peuple; car qu'est-ce que mon âme dans une création si immense?
18 Behold, the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, the deep, and the earth, and all that therein is, shall be moved when he shall visit.	18 Voici que le ciel, et les cieux des cieux, l'abîme, et toute la terre et tout ce qu'ils contiennent, trembleront à Son aspect.
19 The mountains also and foundations of the earth be shaken with trembling, when the Lord looketh upon them.	19 Les montagnes aussi, et les collines, et les fondements de la terre seront ébranlés de frayeur lorsque Dieu les regardera.
20 No heart can think upon these things worthily: and who is able to conceive his ways?	20 Et parmi toutes ces choses le coeur de l'homme demeure insensé, et tous les coeurs sont compris par Dieu.
21 It is a tempest which no man can see: for the most part of his works are hid.	21 Quel est celui qui comprend Ses voies, et cette tempête que l'oeil de l'homme ne voit pas?
22 Who can declare the works of his justice? or who can endure them? for his covenant is afar off, and the trial of all things is in the end.	22 Car la plupart de Ses oeuvres sont cachées; mais qui annoncera les effets de Sa justice, ou qui les soutiendra? Car Ses arrêts sont loin, pour quelques-uns, et l'examen de toutes choses n'aura lieu qu'au dernier jour.
23 He that wanteth understanding will think upon vain things: and a foolish man erring imagineth follies.	23 Celui qui manque de coeur a des pensées vaines, et l'homme imprudent et égaré ne s'occupe que de folies.
24 by son, hearken unto me, and learn knowledge, and mark my words with thy heart.	24 Ecoute-moi, mon fils, et apprends à bien régler ton esprit, et rends ton coeur attentif à mes paroles;
25 I will shew forth doctrine in weight, and declare his knowledge exactly.	25 et je te donnerai des instructions très exactes, et je t'exposerai les profondeurs de la sagesse. Rends ton coeur attentif à mes paroles, et je te dirai en toute droiture d'esprit les merveilles que Dieu a mises dans ses oeuvres dès le principe, et je t'apprendrai à Le connaître avec vérité.
26 The works of the Lord are done in judgment from the beginning: and from the time he made them he disposed the parts thereof.	26 Les oeuvres de Dieu ont été faites avec sagesse dès le commencement; en même temps qu'Il les créait, Il a distingué leurs parties, et leurs débuts ont réglé la suite de leur existence.
27 He garnished his works for ever, and in his hand are the chief of them unto all generations: they neither labour, nor are weary, nor cease from their works.	27 Il a orné à jamais ces oeuvres; elles n'ont ressenti ni faim ni fatigue, et elles n'ont pas interrompu leur travail.
28 None of them hindereth another, and they shall never disobey his word.	28 Jamais l'une n'a pressé ni dérangé l'autre.
29 After this the Lord looked upon the earth, and filled it with his blessings.	29 Ne sois pas incrédule à Sa parole.
30 With all manner of living things hath he covered the face thereof; and they shall return into it again.	30 Après cela Dieu a regardé la terre, et l'a remplie de Ses biens.
	31 Il a montré à sa surface l'âme de tous les êtres vivants, et c'est en elle qu'ils retournent.
