1 A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.	1 Che bisogno ha l'uomo di andar cercando quel che è sopra di lui, mentre ignora ciò che gli è vantaggioso nella vita, per tutti i giorni del suo pellegrinaggio, pel tempo che passa come ombra? E chi potrà indicargli ciò che dopo di lui avverrà sotto il sole?
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.	2 Un buon nome vai meglio che preziosi unguenti, e il giorno della morte vai meglio del giorno della nascita.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.	3 Meglio andare in una casa dove si fa duolo, che in una casa dove si banchetta; perchè nella prima si ricorda il fine di tutti gli uomini, e il vivo pensa a quello che sarà.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.	4 Lo sdegno è preferibile al riso, perchè colla severità del volto si corregge l'animo di chi ha mancato.
5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.	5 Il cuore dei saggi è dove è la tristezza, il cuore degli stolti dov'è l'allegria.
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.	6 Meglio essere ripreso dal saggio, che essere ingannato dall'adulazione degli stolti.
7 Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.	7 Perchè il riso dello stolto è come lo schioppettìo dei pruni sotto il paiolo. Ma anche questo è vanità.
8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.	8 La calunnia conturba il saggio e ne accascia il cuore.
9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.	9 E' meglio il fine di una cosa che il principio. E' migliore il paziente dell'arrogante.
10 Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.	10 Non essere facile ad arrabbiarti, perchè la collera riposa nel seno dello stolto.
11 Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.	11 Non dire: « Chi sa perchè i tempi passati furon migliori di quelli d'ora? » perchè tale domanda è stolta.
12 For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.	12 La sapienza colle ricchezze è più utile e giova di più a chi vede il sole,
13 Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?	13 infatti come protegge la sapienza, protegge il danaro; ma il vantaggio dell'istruzione e della sapienza è questo, che dànno la vita a chi le possiede.
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.	14 Considera le opere di Dio, e che nessuno può correggere quello che lui ha scartato.
15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.	15 Godi i beni nel giorno felice, e preparati al giorno della sventura, chè Dio ha fatto questo come quello, e in modo che l'uomo non possa trovare contro di lui dei giusti lamenti.
16 Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?	16 Ho visto ancor questo nei giorni della mia vanità: il giusto perisce nella sua giustizia, l'empio campa molto nella sua malizia.
17 Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?	17 Guardati dall'esser troppo giusto, nè voler esser più sapiente del necessario, per non diventare stupido.
18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.	18 Guardati dagli eccessi d'empietà e dalla stoltezza, per non morire prima del tempo.
19 Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.	19 E' bene che tu sostenti il giusto, ma anche che tu non ritiri da, lui la tua mano, perchè chi teme il Signore non trascura nulla.
20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.	20 La sapienza rende il saggio più forte di dieci principi d'una città.
21 Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:	21 Senza dubbio non v'è sulla terra un uomo giusto che faccia il bene e non pecchi.
22 For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.	22 Inoltre non por mente a tutte le chiacchiere che si dicono, per non sentire il tuo servo dir male di te.
23 All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.	23 Sa infatti bene la tua coscienza che tu spesso hai detto male degli altri.
24 That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?	24 Tutto io tentai per la sapienza: dissi: « Vo' diventar sapiente »; ma la sapienza s'allontanò da me.
25 I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:	25 Molto più di quello che era rimane alta e profonda: chi arriverà a trovarla?
26 And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.	26 Percorsi coll'animo mio tutte le cose per conoscere, considerare, cercare la sapienza e la ragione, per distinguere l'empietà dello stolto e l'errore degl'imprudenti.
27 Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:	27 Ed ho trovato che la donna è più amara della morte, è un lacciò di cacciatore, il suo cuore è una rete, le sue mani son catene. Colui che è caro a Dio fuggirà da lei, ma il peccatore ne resterà preso.
28 Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.	28 Ecco quello che ho trovato fra una cosa e l'altra per trovare la sapienza — dice l'Ecclesiaste —
29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.	29 e la cerco ancora e non la trovo. Tra mille trovai un uomo; tra tutte le donne non ho trovata una donna.
	30 Questo solo ho trovato: che Dio fece l'uomo retto e che l'uomo da se stesso si impigliò in infinite questioni. Chi è come il sapiente? E chi comprende la soluzione del problema?
