1 A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.	1 Che bisogno ha egli l'uomo di andar cercando quel che è sopra di lui, mentre egli non sa quel che sia per essergli utile nella sua vita pei giorni tutti di suo pellegrinaggio, e per quel tempo, che passa come ombra? E chi potrà far sapere a lui quel, che dopo di lui sia per avvenir sotto del sole?
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.	2 Val più il buon nome che i balsami più pregiati, e il di della morte (val più) che il di della nascita.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.	3 È meglio andare nella casa dove si fa duolo, che nella casa dove si fa banchetto; perocché in quella si rammemora il fine di tutti gli uomini, e il vivo pensa a quello che deve essere.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.	4 Lo sdegno è preferibile al riso; perocché colla severità del volto si corregge l'animo di chi ha peccato.
5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.	5 Il cuore de' saggi sta dove' è tristezza, e il cuore degli stolti dov'è allegria.
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.	6 E meglio l'essere ripreso dai saggi, che ingannato dall'adulazione degli stolti:
7 Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.	7 Perocché il riso dello stolto è come lo stridere delle spine, che bruciano sotto il pajuolo: e in questo pure è vanità.
8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.	8 La calunnia conturba l'uomo saggio, e abbatte la fortezza del cuore di lui.
9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.	9 La fine dell'orazione è migliore, che il principio. L'uomo paziente è migliore dell'arrogante.
10 Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.	10 Guardati dall'essere corrivo allo sdegno, perché l'ira posa in seno dello stolto.
11 Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.	11 Non dire: Chi sa il perché i tempi passati furon migliori, che quelli d'adesso? Imperocché una tale interrogazione è stolta.
12 For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.	12 La sapienza colle ricchezze è più utile, e giova quel più a quelli, che vivono.
13 Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?	13 Perocché siccome protegge la sapienza, così protegge il denaro; ma il sapere, e la sapienza han questo di più, che danno la vita a chi le possiede.
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.	14 Considera le opere di Dio, e come nessuno può correggere chi è riggettato da lui.
15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.	15 Godi del bene nel giorno buono, e armati pel giorno cattivo; perocché questo come quello gli ha fatti Dio,onde non trovi l'uomo da querelarsi con giustizia contro di lui.
16 Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?	16 Vidi ancor questo cose ne' vani miei giorni. Il giusto perisce nella sua giustizia; e il malvagio vive lungamente nella sua malizia.
17 Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?	17 Guardati dal voler essere troppo giusto; e non voler essere più saggio, che non bisogna, affin di non diventar stupido.
18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.	18 Guardati dalla molta empietà, e dalla stoltezza, perché tu non abbi a morire prima del tuo tempo.
19 Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.	19 Egli è ben fatto, che tu porga aiuto al giusto: ma non ritirar la tua mano neppure da quello; perocché chi teme Dio, non trascura cosa veruna.
20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.	20 La sapienza fa il saggio più forte, che dieci principi della città.
21 Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:	21 Non vi è certamente sulla terra uomo giusto, il quale faccia il bene, e non pecchi.
22 For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.	22 Ma tu, non badare minutamente a tutte le parole, che si dicono, affinchè non ti avvenga di sentire il tuo servo dir male di te:
23 All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.	23 Perocché è noto alla tua coscienza, che tu pure sovente hai detto male degli altri.
24 That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?	24 Tutto io tentai per amore della sapienza: dissi: io farò acquisto della sapienza, ed ella andò lontano da me
25 I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:	25 Anche più, che non era. Ed oh profonda profondità! Chi ne toccherà il fondo.
26 And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.	26 Mi volsi a considerare coll'animo mio tutte le cose per apparare, e conoscere, e cercare la sapienza, e la ragione; e per ravvisare l'empietà dello stolto, e l'errore degli imprudenti:
27 Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:	27 E riconobbi come amara più della morte ell' è la donna, la quale è un laccio di cacciatore, e il suo cuore è una rete, e le sue mani sono catene. Colui, che è caro a Dio, fuggirà da lei, ma il peccatore vi sarà preso.
28 Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.	28 Ecco quel, ch'io trovai (disse l'Ecclesiaste) in paragonando una cosa coll'altra, affin di trovare la ragione,
29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.	29 Cui cerca tuttora l'anima mia, e non l'ho trovata. Tra mille trovai un uomo. Tra tutte quante le donne nessuna io ne trovai.
	30 Questo solo trovai, che Dio fece diritto l'uomo; ma questi si involse in immense questioni. Chi è che si rassomigli al saggio! E chi è che comprenda lo scioglimento della questione.
