1 A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.	1 Más vale el buen nombre que un buen perfume y el día de la muerte, más que el del nacimiento.
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.	2 Más vale ir a una casa donde hay duelo que asistir a un banquete, porque ese es el fin de todo hombre y allí reflexionan los vivientes.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.	3 Más vale la tristeza que la risa, porque el rostro serio ayuda a pensar.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.	4 El corazón del sabio está en la casa de duelo y el del necio, en el lugar de diversión.
5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.	5 Más vale escuchar el reproche de un sabio que oír el canto de los necios.
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.	6 porque como el crepitar de las espinas bajo la olla, así es la risa de los necios. Y también esto es vanidad.
7 Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.	7 La opresión puede enloquecer a un sabio, y los regalos pierden el corazón.
8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.	8 Más vale el fin de una cosa que su comienzo y más vale ser paciente que pretender demasiado.
9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.	9 No te dejes llevar por el enojo, porque el enojo se alberga en el pecho de los necios.
10 Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.	10 No digas: «¿A qué se debe que el tiempo pasado fue mejor que el presente?». Porque no es la sabiduría la que te lleva a hacer esa pregunta.
11 Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.	11 La sabiduría vale tanto como una herencia y es provechosa para los que ven la luz del sol.
12 For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.	12 Porque estar a la sombra de la sabiduría es como estar a la sombra del dinero, y la ventaja de la ciencia es que la sabiduría hace vivir al que la posee.
13 Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?	13 Observa la obra de Dios: ¿quién puede enderezar lo que él torció?
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.	14 Disfruta de los días felices y en los días adversos, reflexiona: Dios hizo que se sucedan unos a otros, de manera que el hombre no descubra nada de lo que vendrá después de él.
15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.	15 Yo he visto de todo en mis días vanos: hay justos que parecen a pesar de su justicia y malvados que sobreviven a pesar de su maldad.
16 Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?	16 No seas excesivamente justo ni quieras ser demasiado sabio: ¿para qué te vas a arruinar?
17 Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?	17 No seas demasiado malo ni te comportes como un necio: ¿para qué vas a morir antes de tiempo?
18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.	18 Lo mejor es procurar esto sin dejar de lado aquello: el que teme a Dios sabe unir las dos cosas.
19 Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.	19 La sabiduría hace más fuerte al sabio que diez magistrados de una ciudad.
20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.	20 No hay un hombre justo sobre la tierra que haga el bien sin pecar jamás.
21 Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:	21 Tampoco prestes atención a todo lo que se dice. no sea que escuches a tu servidor que te maldice.
22 For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.	22 Porque, además, tú sabes muy bien cuántas veces has maldecido a otros.
23 All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.	23 Yo experimenté todo esto con sabiduría, pensando: «Voy a ser sabio». Pero ella está fuera de mi alcance:
24 That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?	24 lo que existe es lejano y profundo, más profundo de lo que se puede vislumbrar.
25 I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:	25 Yo me dediqué con el mayor empeño a conocer, a explorar, y a buscar la sabiduría y la razón de las cosas y reconocí que la maldad es una insensatez, y la necedad, una locura.
26 And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.	26 Y yo encuentro más amarga que la muerte a la mujer, cuando ella misma es una trampa, su corazón, una red, y sus brazos, ataduras. Con el favor de Dios, uno puede librarse, pero el pecador se deja atrapar.
27 Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:	27 Mira: esto es lo que descubrí, dice Cohélet. tratando de razonar caso por caso.
28 Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.	28 Pero esto es lo que todavía busco, sin haberlo encontrado: He logrado encontrar a un hombre entre mil, pero entre todas las mujeres no hallé ni una sola.
29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.	29 En resumen, he descubierto lo siguiente: Dios hizo recto al hombre, pero ellos se buscan muchas complicaciones.
