1 A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.	1 Une bonne réputation vaut plus qu’un bon parfum: le jour de la mort passe donc avant celui de la naissance.
2 It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.	2 Va à la maison du deuil plutôt qu’à la maison en fête: tu y verras la fin de tout homme, et pour le vivant il est bon d’y réfléchir.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.	3 Mieux vaut le chagrin que le rire: la tristesse sur le visage promet un cœur meilleur.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.	4 La maison du deuil retient l’attention des sages, la maison en fête capte l’attention des sots.
5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.	5 Sois l’homme qui écoute la réprimande d’un sage et non celui qui suit la chanson des sots;
6 For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.	6 le sot a ri: crépitement de ronces brûlant sous la marmite. Voilà encore une chose déroutante:
7 Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.	7 la corruption pervertit même le sage, les cadeaux étouffent sa conscience.
8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.	8 Mener à bien une entreprise vaut mieux que la commencer: c’est la persévérance qui compte, et non la prétention.
9 Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.	9 Ne laisse pas ton esprit céder à la colère: la colère s’installe chez le sot.
10 Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not inquire wisely concerning this.	10 Ne dis pas: “Comment étaient les temps anciens? Sûrement meilleurs que ceux d’aujourd’hui.” Ce n’est pas la sagesse qui te fait poser cette question.
11 Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.	11 La sagesse est utile pour celui qui a des terres: combien plus pour ceux qui voient le soleil!
12 For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.	12 La sagesse est une protection, tout comme l’argent; mais l’avantage du savoir, c’est que la sagesse donne la vie à ceux qui la possèdent.
13 Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?	13 Regarde l’œuvre de Dieu: qui pourrait redresser ce qu’il a courbé?
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.	14 Aux jours heureux goûte le bonheur, et au jour du malheur, ouvre les yeux: Dieu les a disposés l’un et l’autre de telle sorte que personne ne peut savoir ce que sera sa fin.
15 All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.	15 J’ai vu de tout durant mes jours, en cette vie ou l’on n’a prise sur rien: il y a des justes qui périssent, malgré leur justice, et des méchants qui prolongent leurs jours, en dépit de leur méchanceté.
16 Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?	16 Ne sois pas juste à l’excès, et ne fais pas le sage plus qu’il ne faut: tu pourrais te démolir.
17 Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?	17 Ne sois pas méchant à l’excès et ne te conduis pas comme un insensé: tu pourrais mourir avant l’heure.
18 It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.	18 Il est bon de prendre un parti sans renoncer tout à fait à l’autre: celui qui craint Dieu tirera profit de l’un et de l’autre.
19 Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.	19 La sagesse rend le sage plus fort que les dix chefs dans leur cité.
20 For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.	20 Il n’y a sur terre aucun homme assez juste pour faire le bien sans jamais pécher.
21 Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:	21 Ne prête donc pas attention à tout ce que l’on raconte: ainsi tu n’entendras pas ton serviteur dire du mal de toi.
22 For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.	22 Toi-même d’ailleurs, tu le sais bien, tu as souvent dit du mal des autres.
23 All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.	23 Tout cela, je l’ai expérimenté: c’est une question de sagesse. Je m’étais dit: “Je veux être un sage.” Mais elle était si loin de moi!
24 That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?	24 Elle est au-delà de tout ce qui existe.
25 I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:	25 Quand je me suis appliqué à savoir, à approfondir, à chercher la sagesse et le pourquoi des choses, j’ai reconnu que la méchanceté est une sottise et une folie.
26 And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.	26 J’ai tiré cette conclusion que la femme est plus amère que la mort: elle est pour l’homme un piège, son cœur est un filet et ses bras, des chaînes. Celui qui plaît à Dieu lui échappe, mais le pécheur s’y fait prendre.
27 Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:	27 Voilà ce que j’ai trouvé - disait Qohélet - réfléchissant sur toutes choses, l’une après l’autre, pour comprendre.
28 Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.	28 Cependant je cherche encore: un homme entre mille, je l’ai trouvé, mais une femme dans tout le nombre, je ne l’ai pas trouvée.
29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.	29 Et voilà encore ce que j’ai vu: l’être humain, Dieu l’a fait simple, mais eux, ils se sont cherché mille problèmes.
