¹ My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.	¹ Mon fils, retiens mes paroles, garde précieusement mes conseils.
² Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.	² Observe mes commandements et tu vivras, garde mon enseignement comme la prunelle de tes yeux.
³ Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.	³ Serre-les fermement entre tes doigts, inscris-les sur les tablettes de ton cœur!
⁴ Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:	⁴ Dis à la sagesse: “Sois ma sœur”, et à l’intelligence: “Sois mon amie”.
⁵ That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.	⁵ Alors tu sauras te garder de la femme d’un autre, de la belle inconnue aux douces paroles.
⁶ For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,	⁶ De la fenêtre de ma maison je regardais à travers le grillage,
⁷ And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,	⁷ et je vis passer un naïf, un de ces jeunes qui ne pensent à rien.
⁸ Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,	⁸ Il s’engageait dans la ruelle, près du coin où vit cette femme, il se dirigeait vers sa maison.
⁹ In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:	⁹ C’était le soir, à la tombée du jour, déjà c’était la nuit et l’obscurité.
¹⁰ And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.	¹⁰ Et voici qu’elle vient à sa rencontre, vêtue comme une prostituée et couverte d’un voile.
¹¹ (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:	¹¹ C’est la femme effrontée, qui n’a plus de honte, qui ne tient plus en place dans sa maison.
¹² Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)	¹² Tantôt dans la rue, tantôt sur les places, de tous côtés elle cherche l’aventure.
¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,	¹³ Elle se jette sur ce jeune homme et l’embrasse; elle lui dit d’un ton assuré:
¹⁴ I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.	¹⁴ “Il me fallait offrir un sacrifice, aujourd’hui même je devais m’acquitter d’un vœu.
¹⁵ Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.	¹⁵ Je suis donc sortie à ta recherche pour que tu sois au repas et je t’ai trouvé.
¹⁶ I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.	¹⁶ J’ai garni mon divan de couvertures, de fine toile d’Égypte.
¹⁷ I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.	¹⁷ J’ai parfumé mon lit avec de la myrrhe, de l’aloès et de la marjolaine.
¹⁸ Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.	¹⁸ Viens, prenons notre plaisir, enivrons-nous d’amour jusqu’au matin!
¹⁹ For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:	¹⁹ Mon mari n’est pas à la maison, il est en voyage loin d’ici;
²⁰ He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.	²⁰ il a pris l’argent avec lui et ne reviendra à la maison qu’à la pleine lune.”
²¹ With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.	²¹ À force d’habileté elle réussit à le convaincre, elle le séduit et l’entraîne.
²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;	²² Il la suit aussitôt, comme un bœuf qu’on mène à l’abattoir, comme un cerf pris au nœud coulant,
²³ Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.	²³ à qui bientôt une flèche percera le foie. Il est comme l’oiseau qui se jette dans le filet, sans savoir qu’il y va de sa vie!
²⁴ Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.	²⁴ Donc vous, mes fils, écoutez-moi; retenez bien cette consigne:
²⁵ Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.	²⁵ ne te laisse pas séduire par une de ces femmes, ne te laisse pas égarer par ses manœuvres.
²⁶ For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.	²⁶ Car elle a déjà fait beaucoup de victimes, et les plus forts y sont tombés.
²⁷ Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.	²⁷ De sa maison on passe chez les morts, c’est un chemin qui s’enfonce vers le monde des morts.
