1 Then Job answered and said,	1 Giobbe prese la parola e disse:
2 I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?	2 "Certo, so che è così; come può un uomo essere giusto davanti a Dio?
3 If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.	3 Se uno volesse disputare con lui, non gli risponderebbe una volta su mille.
4 He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?	4 Chi, saggio di mente e potente per la forza, gli si è opposto ed è rimasto illeso?
5 Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger.	5 Egli sposta le montagne senza che se ne avvedano e le sconvolge nella sua collera.
6 Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.	6 Egli scuote la terra dal suo posto e le sue colonne vacillano.
7 Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.	7 Ordina al sole di non sorgere e mette un sigillo alle stelle.
8 Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.	8 Egli da solo dispiega i cieli e cammina sulle onde del mare.
9 Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.	9 Egli forma l'Orsa e l'Orione, le Pleiadi e le Costellazioni del sud.
10 Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.	10 Compie prodigi insondabili e meraviglie senza numero.
11 Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.	11 Ecco, mi passa vicino e non lo vedo, se ne va, e di lui non mi accorgo.
12 Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?	12 Se rapisce qualcosa, chi lo può impedire? Chi può dirgli: "Che cosa fai?".
13 If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him.	13 Dio non ritira la sua collera, sotto di lui si curvano le legioni di Raab.
14 How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?	14 Tanto meno potrei io rispondergli o scegliere argomenti contro di lui.
15 Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.	15 Anche se avessi ragione non riceverei risposta, dovrei chiedere grazia al mio avversario.
16 If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.	16 Anche se rispondesse al mio appello, non crederei che ha ascoltato la mia voce,
17 For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.	17 lui, che mi schiaccia nell'uragano e moltiplica senza ragione le mie ferite.
18 He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.	18 Non mi lascia riprendere fiato, anzi mi sazia di amarezze.
19 If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?	19 Se si tratta di forza, è lui il vigoroso; se si tratta di giudizio, chi lo farà comparire?
20 If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.	20 Anche se fossi innocente, il mio parlare mi condannerebbe; se fossi giusto, mi dichiarerebbe perverso.
21 Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.	21 Sono innocente? Non lo so neppure io; detesto la mia vita.
22 This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.	22 Però è lo stesso, ve lo assicuro, egli fa perire l'innocente e il reo!
23 If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.	23 Se una calamità miete vittime in un istante, egli se ne ride della disgrazia degl'innocenti.
24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?	24 Lascia la terra nel potere dei malvagi, egli vela il volto dei suoi governanti. Se non è lui, chi dunque può essere?
25 Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.	25 I miei giorni passano più veloci di un corriere, fuggono senza gustare felicità.
26 They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.	26 Scorrono veloci come barche di giunco, come aquila che piomba sulla preda.
27 If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself:	27 Se dico: "Voglio dimenticare la mia afflizione, cambiare il mio volto ed essere lieto",
28 I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.	28 mi spavento per tutte le sofferenze; e poi so che tu non mi assolverai.
29 If I be wicked, why then labour I in vain?	29 Se sono colpevole, perché affaticarmi invano?
30 If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;	30 Anche se mi lavassi con la neve e pulissi le mie mani con la potassa,
31 Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.	31 tu mi tufferesti nel fango e le mie vesti mi avrebbero in orrore.
32 For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.	32 Egli, infatti, non è un uomo come me, cui possa replicare, e che insieme compariamo in giudizio.
33 Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.	33 Non c'è un giudice tra noi che ponga la mano su noi due,
34 Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:	34 che allontani da me la sua verga, in modo che il suo terrore non mi spaventi.
35 Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.	35 Allora potrei parlare senza temerlo; poiché non è così, sono solo con me stesso.
