DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
He that loveth correction, loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is foolish.1 He who loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
He that is good, shall draw grace from the Lord : but he that trusteth in his own devices doth wickedly.2 The good man wins favor from the LORD, but the schemer is condemned by him.
Men shall not be strengthened by wickedness: and the root of the just shall not be moved.3 No man is built up by wickedness, but the root of the just will never be disturbed.
A diligent woman is a crown to her husband: and she that doth things worthy of confusion, is a rottenness in his bones.4 A worthy wife is the crown of her husband, but a disgraceful one is like rot in his bones.
The thoughts of the just are judgments: and the counsels of the wicked are deceitful.5 The plans of the just are legitimate; the designs of the wicked are deceitful.
The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood: the mouth of the just shall deliver them.6 The words of the wicked are a deadly ambush, but the speech of the upright saves them.
Turn the wicked, and they shall not be: but the house of the just shall stand firm.7 The wicked are overthrown and are no more, but the house of the just stands firm.
A man shall be known by his learning: but he that is vain and foolish, shall be exposed to contempt.8 According to his good sense a man is praised, but one with a warped mind is despised.
Better is the poor man that provideth for himself, than he that is glorious and wanteth bread.9 Better a lowly man who supports himself than one of assumed importance who lacks bread.
The just regardeth the lives of his beasts: but the bowels of the wicked are cruel.10 The just man takes care of his beast, but the heart of the wicked is merciless.
He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that pursueth idleness is very foolish. He that is delighted in passing his time over wine, leaveth a reproach in his strong holds.11 He who tills his own land has food in plenty, but he who follows idle pursuits is a fool.
The desire of the wicked is the fortification of evil men: but the root of the just shall prosper.12 The stronghold of evil men will be demolished, but the root of the just is enduring.
For the sins of the lips ruin draweth nigh to the evil mall: but the just shall escape out of distress.13 In the sin of his lips the evil man is ensnared, but the just comes free of trouble.
By the fruit of his own mouth shall a man be filled with good things, and according to the works of his hands it shall be repaid him.14 From the fruit of his words a man has his fill of good things, and the work of his hands comes back to reward him.
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that is wise hearkeneth unto counsels.15 The way of the fool seems right in his own eyes, but he who listens to advice is wise.
A fool immediately sheweth his anger: but he that dissembleth injuries is wise.16 The fool immediately shows his anger, but the shrewd man passes over an insult.
He that speaketh that which he knoweth, sheweth forth justice: but he that lieth, is a deceitful witness.17 He tells the truth who states what he is sure of, but a lying witness speaks deceitfully.
There is that promiseth, and is pricked as it were with a sword of conscience: but the tongue of the wise is health.18 The prating of some men is like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise is healing.
The lip of truth shall be steadfast for ever: but he that is a hasty witness, frameth a lying tongue.19 Truthful lips endure forever, the lying tongue, for only a moment.
Deceit is in the heart of them that think evil things: but joy followeth them that take counsels of peace.20 Deceit is in the hands of those who plot evil, but those who counsel peace have joy.
Whatsoever shall befall the just man. it shall not make him sad: but the wicked shall be filled with mischief.21 No harm befalls the just, but the wicked are overwhelmed with misfortune.
Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord: but they that deal faithfully please him.22 Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who are truthful are his delight.
A cautious man concealeth knowledge: and the heart of fools publisheth folly.23 A shrewd man conceals his knowledge, but the hearts of fools gush forth folly.
The hand of the valiant shall bear rule: but that which is slothful, shall be under tribute.24 The diligent hand will govern, but the slothful will be enslaved.
Grief in the heart of a man shall bring him low, but with a good word he shall be made glad.25 Anxiety in a man's heart depresses it, but a kindly word makes it glad.
He that neglecteth a loss for the sake of a friend, is just: but the way of the wicked shall deceive them.26 The just man surpasses his neighbor, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
The deceitful man shall not find gain: but the substance of a just man shall be precious gold.27 The slothful man catches not his prey, but the wealth of the diligent man is great.
In the path of justice is life: but the by-way leadeth to death.28 In the path of justice there is life, but the abominable way leads to death.
