VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Filii estote Domini Dei vestri : non vos incidetis, nec facietis calvitium super mortuo :1 'You are children of Yahweh your God. You must not gash yourselves or shave your foreheads for thedead.
quoniam populus sanctus es Domino Deo tuo, et te elegit ut sis ei in populum peculiarem de cunctis gentibus, quæ sunt super terram.2 For you are a people consecrated to Yahweh your God, and Yahweh has chosen you to be his ownpeople from al the peoples on the earth.
Ne comedatis quæ immunda sunt.3 'You must not eat anything disgusting.
Hoc est animal quod comedere debetis : bovem, et ovem, et capram,4 These are the animals you may eat: ox, sheep, goat,
cervum et capream, bubalum, tragelaphum, pygargum, orygem, camelopardalum.5 deer, gazel e, roebuck, ibex, antelope, oryx, mountain sheep.
Omne animal, quod in duas partes findit ungulam, et ruminat, comedetis.6 You may eat any animal that has a divided and cloven hoof and that is a ruminant.
De his autem, quæ ruminant, et ungulam non findunt, comedere non debetis, ut camelum, leporem, chœrogryllum : hæc, quia ruminant et non dividunt ungulam, immunda erunt vobis.7 Of those, however, that are ruminants and of those that have a divided and cloven hoof you may noteat the fol owing: the camel, the hare and the coney, which are ruminants but have no cloven hoof; you mustclass them as unclean.
Carnibus eorum non vescemini, et cadavera non tangetis.8 So also the pig, which though it has a cloven hoof is not a ruminant; you must class it as unclean. Youmust neither eat the meat of such animals nor touch their dead bodies.
Hæc comedetis ex omnibus quæ morantur in aquis : quæ habent pinnulas et squamas, comedite :9 'Of whatever lives in water you may eat the fol owing: you may eat anything that has fins and scales.
But you must not eat anything without fins and scales: you must class it as unclean.
Omnes aves mundas comedite.11 'You may eat al clean birds,
Immundas ne comedatis : aquilam scilicet, et gryphem, et haliæetum,12 but the fol owing birds you must not eat: the tawny vulture, the griffon, the osprey,
ixion et vulturem ac milvum juxta genus suum :13 the kite and the several kinds of buzzard,
et omne corvini generis,14 al kinds of raven,
et struthionem, ac noctuam, et larum, atque accipitrem juxta genus suum :15 the ostrich, the screech owl, the seagul , the several kinds of hawk,
onocrotalum, et charadrium, singula in genere suo : upupam quoque et vespertilionem.18 stork, the several kinds of heron, hoopoe and bat.
Et omne quod reptat et pennulas habet, immundum erit, et non comedetur.19 You are to class al winged insects as unclean and must not eat them.
Omne quod mundum est, comedite.20 You may eat any clean fowl.
'You must not eat any animal that has died a natural death. You may give it to a resident foreigner toeat, or sel it to a foreigner. For you are a people consecrated to Yahweh your God. 'You must not boil a kid in itsmother's milk.
Decimam partem separabis de cunctis fructibus tuis qui nascuntur in terra per annos singulos,22 'Every year, you must take a tithe of what your fields produce from what you have sown
et comedes in conspectu Domini Dei tui in loco quem elegerit, ut in eo nomen illius invocetur, decimam frumenti tui, et vini, et olei, et primogenita de armentis et ovibus tuis : ut discas timere Dominum Deum tuum omni tempore.23 and, in the presence of Yahweh your God, in the place where he chooses to give his name a home, you must eat the tithe of your wheat, of your new wine and of your oil, and the first-born of your herd and flock;and by so doing, you wil learn always to fear Yahweh your God.
Cum autem longior fuerit via, et locus quem elegerit Dominus Deus tuus, tibique benedixerit, nec potueris ad eum hæc cuncta portare,24 'If the road is too long for you, if you cannot bring your tithe because the place in which Yahwehchooses to make a home for his name is too far away, when Yahweh your God has blessed you,
vendes omnia, et in pretium rediges, portabisque manu tua, et proficisceris ad locum quem elegerit Dominus Deus tuus :25 you must convert it into money and, with the money clasped in your hand, you must go to the placechosen by Yahweh your God;
et emes ex eadem pecunia quidquid tibi placuerit, sive ex armentis, sive ex ovibus, vinum quoque et siceram, et omne quod desiderat anima tua : et comedes coram Domino Deo tuo, et epulaberis tu et domus tua :26 there you may spend the money on whatever you like, oxen, sheep, wine, fermented liquor, anythingyou please. There you must eat in the presence of Yahweh your God and rejoice, you and your household.
et Levites qui intra portas tuas est, cave ne derelinquas eum, quia non habet aliam partem in possessione tua.27 Do not neglect the Levite living in your community, since he has no share or heritage of his ownamong you.
Anno tertio separabis aliam decimam ex omnibus quæ nascuntur tibi eo tempore, et repones intra januas tuas.28 'At the end of every three years, you must take al the tithes of your harvests for that year and col ectthem in your community.
Then the Levite -- since he has no share or heritage of his own among you -- the foreigner, theorphan and the widow living in your community, wil come and eat all they want. And so Yahweh your God wilbless you in al the labours that you undertake.'
