VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Tunc simile erit regnum cælorum decem virginibus : quæ accipientes lampades suas exierunt obviam sponso et sponsæ.1 'Then the kingdom of Heaven wil be like this: Ten wedding attendants took their lamps and went tomeet the bridegroom.
Quinque autem ex eis erant fatuæ, et quinque prudentes :2 Five of them were foolish and five were sensible:
sed quinque fatuæ, acceptis lampadibus, non sumpserunt oleum secum :3 the foolish ones, though they took their lamps, took no oil with them,
prudentes vero acceperunt oleum in vasis suis cum lampadibus.4 whereas the sensible ones took flasks of oil as wel as their lamps.
Moram autem faciente sponso, dormitaverunt omnes et dormierunt.5 The bridegroom was late, and they al grew drowsy and fell asleep.
Media autem nocte clamor factus est : Ecce sponsus venit, exite obviam ei.6 But at midnight there was a cry, "Look! The bridegroom! Go out and meet him."
Tunc surrexerunt omnes virgines illæ, et ornaverunt lampades suas.7 Then al those wedding attendants woke up and trimmed their lamps,
Fatuæ autem sapientibus dixerunt : Date nobis de oleo vestro, quia lampades nostræ extinguuntur.8 and the foolish ones said to the sensible ones, "Give us some of your oil: our lamps are going out."
Responderunt prudentes, dicentes : Ne forte non sufficiat nobis, et vobis, ite potius ad vendentes, et emite vobis.9 But they replied, "There may not be enough for us and for you; you had better go to those who sel itand buy some for yourselves."
Dum autem irent emere, venit sponsus : et quæ paratæ erant, intraverunt cum eo ad nuptias, et clausa est janua.10 They had gone off to buy it when the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him tothe wedding hall and the door was closed.
Novissime vero veniunt et reliquæ virgines, dicentes : Domine, domine, aperi nobis.11 The other attendants arrived later. "Lord, Lord," they said, "open the door for us."
At ille respondens, ait : Amen dico vobis, nescio vos.12 But he replied, "In truth I tel you, I do not know you."
Vigilate itaque, quia nescitis diem, neque horam.
So stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour.
Sicut enim homo peregre proficiscens, vocavit servos suos, et tradidit illis bona sua.14 'It is like a man about to go abroad who summoned his servants and entrusted his property to them.
Et uni dedit quinque talenta, alii autem duo, alii vero unum, unicuique secundum propriam virtutem : et profectus est statim.15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to a third one, each in proportion to his ability. Then heset out on his journey.
Abiit autem qui quinque talenta acceperat, et operatus est in eis, et lucratus est alia quinque.16 The man who had received the five talents promptly went and traded with them and made five more.
Similiter et qui duo acceperat, lucratus est alia duo.17 The man who had received two made two more in the same way.
Qui autem unum acceperat, abiens fodit in terram, et abscondit pecuniam domini sui.18 But the man who had received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master'smoney.
Post multum vero temporis venit dominus servorum illorum, et posuit rationem cum eis.19 Now a long time afterwards, the master of those servants came back and went through his accountswith them.
Et accedens qui quinque talenta acceperat, obtulit alia quinque talenta, dicens : Domine, quinque talenta tradidisti mihi, ecce alia quinque superlucratus sum.20 The man who had received the five talents came forward bringing five more. "Sir," he said, "youentrusted me with five talents; here are five more that I have made."
Ait illi dominus ejus : Euge serve bone, et fidelis : quia super pauca fuisti fidelis, super multa te constituam ; intra in gaudium domini tui.21 His master said to him, "Well done, good and trustworthy servant; you have shown you aretrustworthy in small things; I wil trust you with greater; come and join in your master's happiness."
Accessit autem et qui duo talenta acceperat, et ait : Domine, duo talenta tradidisti mihi, ecce alia duo lucratus sum.22 Next the man with the two talents came forward. "Sir," he said, "you entrusted me with two talents; here are two more that I have made."
Ait illi dominus ejus : Euge serve bone, et fidelis : quia super pauca fuisti fidelis, super multa te constituam ; intra in gaudium domini tui.23 His master said to him, "Well done, good and trustworthy servant; you have shown you aretrustworthy in small things; I wil trust you with greater; come and join in your master's happiness."
Accedens autem et qui unum talentum acceperat, ait : Domine, scio quia homo durus es ; metis ubi non seminasti, et congregas ubi non sparsisti :24 Last came forward the man who had the single talent. "Sir," said he, "I had heard you were a hardman, reaping where you had not sown and gathering where you had not scattered;
et timens abii, et abscondi talentum tuum in terra : ecce habes quod tuum est.25 so I was afraid, and I went off and hid your talent in the ground. Here it is; it was yours, you have itback."
Respondens autem dominus ejus, dixit ei : Serve male, et piger, sciebas quia meto ubi non semino, et congrego ubi non sparsi :26 But his master answered him, "You wicked and lazy servant! So you knew that I reap where I havenot sown and gather where I have not scattered?
oportuit ergo te committere pecuniam meam numulariis, et veniens ego recepissem utique quod meum est cum usura.27 Well then, you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have gotmy money back with interest.
Tollite itaque ab eo talentum, et date ei qui habet decem talenta :28 So now, take the talent from him and give it to the man who has the ten talents.
omni enim habenti dabitur, et abundabit : ei autem qui non habet, et quod videtur habere, auferetur ab eo.29 For to everyone who has wil be given more, and he wil have more than enough; but anyone whohas not, wil be deprived even of what he has.
Et inutilem servum ejicite in tenebras exteriores : illic erit fletus, et stridor dentium.
As for this good-for-nothing servant, throw him into the darkness outside, where there will be weepingand grinding of teeth."
Cum autem venerit Filius hominis in majestate sua, et omnes angeli cum eo, tunc sedebit super sedem majestatis suæ :31 'When the Son of man comes in his glory, escorted by al the angels, then he will take his seat on histhrone of glory.
et congregabuntur ante eum omnes gentes, et separabit eos ab invicem, sicut pastor segregat oves ab hædis :32 Al nations wil be assembled before him and he wil separate people one from another as theshepherd separates sheep from goats.
et statuet oves quidem a dextris suis, hædos autem a sinistris.33 He will place the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left.
Tunc dicet rex his qui a dextris ejus erunt : Venite benedicti Patris mei, possidete paratum vobis regnum a constitutione mundi :34 Then the King wil say to those on his right hand, "Come, you whom my Father has blessed, take asyour heritage the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world.
esurivi enim, et dedistis mihi manducare : sitivi, et dedistis mihi bibere : hospes eram, et collegistis me :35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger andyou made me welcome,
nudus, et cooperuistis me : infirmus, et visitastis me : in carcere eram, et venistis ad me.36 lacking clothes and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me."
Tunc respondebunt ei justi, dicentes : Domine, quando te vidimus esurientem, et pavimus te : sitientem, et dedimus tibi potum ?37 Then the upright will say to him in reply, "Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirstyand give you drink?
quando autem te vidimus hospitem, et collegimus te : aut nudum, et cooperuimus te ?38 When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome, lacking clothes and clothe you?
aut quando te vidimus infirmum, aut in carcere, et venimus ad te ?39 When did we find you sick or in prison and go to see you?"
Et respondens rex, dicet illis : Amen dico vobis, quamdiu fecistis uni ex his fratribus meis minimis, mihi fecistis.40 And the King wil answer, "In truth I tel you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of thesebrothers of mine, you did it to me."
Tunc dicet et his qui a sinistris erunt : Discedite a me maledicti in ignem æternum, qui paratus est diabolo, et angelis ejus :41 Then he will say to those on his left hand, "Go away from me, with your curse upon you, to theeternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
esurivi enim, et non dedistis mihi manducare : sitivi, et non dedistis mihi potum :42 For I was hungry and you never gave me food, I was thirsty and you never gave me anything to drink,
hospes eram, et non collegistis me : nudus, et non cooperuistis me : infirmus, et in carcere, et non visitastis me.43 I was a stranger and you never made me welcome, lacking clothes and you never clothed me, sickand in prison and you never visited me."
Tunc respondebunt ei et ipsi, dicentes : Domine, quando te vidimus esurientem, aut sitientem, aut hospitem, aut nudum, aut infirmum, aut in carcere, et non ministravimus tibi ?44 Then it wil be their turn to ask, "Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or lackingclothes, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?"
Tunc respondebit illis, dicens : Amen dico vobis : Quamdiu non fecistis uni de minoribus his, nec mihi fecistis.45 Then he will answer, "In truth I tel you, in so far as you neglected to do this to one of the least ofthese, you neglected to do it to me."
Et ibunt hi in supplicium æternum : justi autem in vitam æternam.46 And they wil go away to eternal punishment, and the upright to eternal life.'
