VULGATA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Congregatus est igitur omnis Israël ad David in Hebron, dicens : Os tuum sumus, et caro tua.	1 Al Israel then ral ied to David at Hebron and said, 'Look, we are your own flesh and bone.
2 Heri quoque et nudiustertius cum adhuc regnaret Saul, tu eras qui educebas et introducebas Israël : tibi enim dixit Dominus Deus tuus : Tu pasces populum meum Israël, et tu eris princeps super eum.	2 In days past when Saul was king, it was you who led Israel on its campaigns, and Yahweh your Godpromised you, "You are to shepherd my people Israel and be leader of my people Israel." '
3 Venerunt ergo omnes majores natu Israël ad regem in Hebron, et iniit David cum eis fœdus coram Domino : unxeruntque eum regem super Israël, juxta sermonem Domini quem locutus est in manu Samuel.	3 So al the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a pact with them in Yahweh'spresence at Hebron, and they anointed David as king of Israel, in accordance with the word of Yahweh throughSamuel.
4 Abiit quoque David et omnis Israël in Jerusalem : hæc est Jebus, ubi erant Jebusæi habitatores terræ.	4 David and al Israel then marched on Jerusalem (that is to say, Jebus); the inhabitants of the territorywere the Jebusites.
5 Dixeruntque qui habitabant in Jebus ad David : Non ingredieris huc. Porro David cepit arcem Sion, quæ est civitas David,	5 The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, 'You wil not get in here.' But David captured the citadel ofZion, that is, the City of David.
6 dixitque : Omnis qui percusserit Jebusæum in primis, erit princeps et dux. Ascendit igitur primus Joab filius Sarviæ, et factus est princeps.	6 David said, 'The first man to kill a Jebusite will be made army commander and chief.' Joab son ofZeruiah was the first man to go up, and was made commander of the army.
7 Habitavit autem David in arce, et idcirco appellata est civitas David.	7 David went to live in the citadel, and that is how it came to be cal ed the City of David.
8 Ædificavitque urbem in circuitu a Mello usque ad gyrum ; Joab autem reliqua urbis exstruxit.	8 He then built a wal round the city, al round, beginning from the Mil o, and Joab restored the rest ofthe city.
9 Proficiebatque David vadens et crescens, et Dominus exercituum erat cum eo.	9 Thus David grew stronger and stronger, for Yahweh Sabaoth was with him.
10 Hi principes virorum fortium David, qui adjuverunt eum ut rex fieret super omnem Israël, juxta verbum Domini quod locutus est ad Israël.	10 These are David's principal champions who joined forces with him in his kingdom, with al Israel, tomake him king in accordance with the word of Yahweh concerning Israel.
11 Et iste numerus robustorum David : Jesbaam filius Hachamoni princeps inter triginta : iste levavit hastam suam super trecentos vulneratos una vice.	11 This is the roll of David's champions: Jashobeam son of Hachmoni, head of the Three; he it was whobrandished his spear over three hundred men whom he had kil ed at one time.
12 Et post eum Eleazar filius patrui ejus Ahohites, qui erat inter tres potentes.	12 Next, there was Eleazar son of Dodo, the Ahohite, one of the three champions.
13 Iste fuit cum David in Phesdomim, quando Philisthiim congregati sunt ad locum illum in prælium : et erat ager regionis illius plenus hordeo, fugeratque populus a facie Philisthinorum.	13 He was with David at Pas-Dammim when the Philistines mustered for battle there. There was a fieldful of barley there; and the people fled from the Philistines.
14 Hi steterunt in medio agri, et defenderunt eum : cumque percussissent Philisthæos, dedit Dominus salutem magnam populo suo.	14 And they took their stand in the middle of the field, held it and cut down the Philistines; and Yahwehbrought about a great victory.
15 Descenderunt autem tres de triginta principibus ad petram, in qua erat David, ad speluncam Odollam, quando Philisthiim fuerant castrametati in valle Raphaim.	15 Three members of the Thirty went down to David at the rock near the Cave of Adul am while acompany of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of the Rephaim.
16 Porro David erat in præsidio, et statio Philisthinorum in Bethlehem.	16 David was then in the stronghold and there was a Philistine garrison in Bethlehem.
17 Desideravit igitur David, et dixit : O si quis daret mihi aquam de cisterna Bethlehem, quæ est in porta !	17 Longingly, David said, 'If only someone would fetch me a drink of water from the wel that stands bythe gate at Bethlehem!'
18 Tres ergo isti per media castra Philisthinorum perrexerunt, et hauserunt aquam de cisterna Bethlehem quæ erat in porta, et attulerunt ad David ut biberet. Qui noluit, sed magis libavit illam Domino,	18 At this the three champions, forcing their way through the Philistine camp, drew water from the welthat stands by the gate of Bethlehem and, bringing it away, presented it to David. David, however, would notdrink any of it, but poured it out as a libation to Yahweh.
19 dicens : Absit ut in conspectu Dei mei hoc faciam, et sanguinem istorum virorum bibam : quia in periculo animarum suarum attulerunt mihi aquam. Et ob hanc causam noluit bibere : hæc fecerunt tres robustissimi.	19 'God preserve me', he said, 'from doing such a thing! Am I to drink these men's blood? For at the riskof their lives they brought it.' And so he would not drink. Such were the deeds of the three champions.
20 Abisai quoque frater Joab ipse erat princeps trium, et ipse levavit hastam suam contra trecentos vulneratos, et ipse erat inter tres nominatissimus,	20 Abishai, brother of Joab, was leader of the Thirty. He it was who brandished his spear over threehundred men whom he had killed, winning himself a name among the Thirty.
21 et inter tres secundos inclytus, et princeps eorum : verumtamen usque ad tres primos non pervenerat.	21 He was a most il ustrious member of the Thirty and became their captain, but he was not equal to theThree.
22 Banaias filius Jojadæ viri robustissimi, qui multa opera perpetrarat, de Cabseel : ipse percussit duos ariel Moab, et ipse descendit et interfecit leonem in media cisterna tempore nivis.	22 Benaiah son of Jehoiada from Kabzeel was the hero of many exploits; he it was who slaughtered twoformidable Moabites and, one snowy day, climbed down and slaughtered the lion in the storage-wel .
23 Et ipse percussit virum ægyptium, cujus statura erat quinque cubitorum, et habebat lanceam ut liciatorium texentium : descendit igitur ad eum cum virga, et rapuit hastam quam tenebat manu, et interfecit eum hasta sua.	23 He also slaughtered an Egyptian, a man who was seven and a half feet tal . The Egyptian was armedwith a spear in his hand like a weaver's beam, but he took him on with a staff, tore the spear from the Egyptian'shand and kil ed the man with it.
24 Hæc fecit Banaias filius Jojadæ, qui erat inter tres robustos nominatissimus,	24 Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada, winning him a name among the thirtychampions.
25 inter triginta primus, verumtamen ad tres usque non pervenerat : posuit autem eum David ad auriculam suam.	25 He was a most il ustrious member of the Thirty, but he was not equal to the Three. David put him incommand of his bodyguard.
26 Porro fortissimi viri in exercitu, Asahel frater Joab, et Elchanan filius patrui ejus de Bethlehem,	26 The military champions were: Asahel brother of Joab; Elhanan son of Dodo, of Bethlehem;
27 Sammoth Arorites, Helles Pharonites,	27 Shammoth of Haror; Helez the Pelonite;
28 Ira filius Acces Thecuites, Abiezer Anathothites,	28 Ira son of Ikkesh, of Tekoa; Abiezer of Anathoth;
29 Sobbochai Husathites, Ilai Ahohites,	29 Sibbecai of Hushah; Ilai of Ahoh;
30 Maharai Netophathites, Heled filius Baana Netophathites,	30 Maharai of Netophah; Heled son of Baanah, of Netophah.
31 Ethai filius Ribai de Gabaath filiorum Benjamin, Banaia Pharatonites,	31 Ithai son of Ribai, of Gibeah in Benjamin. Benaiah of Pirathon;
