1 « Conosci tu il tempo in cui le capre selvatiche figliano nelle rocce, hai assistito nel parto le cerve?	1 Do you know when mountain goats give birth? Have you ever watched deer in labour?
2 Hai contati i mesi di lor gravidanza, e sai il tempo del loro parto?	2 Have you ever counted the months that they carry their young? Do you know when they give birth?
3 S'incurvano per dare alla luce e partoriscono mandando gemiti.	3 They crouch to drop their young, they get rid of their burdens
4 I loro piccoli le lasciano per correre alla pastura; se ne vanno e non tornano più alle madri.	4 and the calves, having grown big and strong, go off into the desert and never come back to them.
5 Chi pose l'onagro in libertà e ne sciolse i legami?	5 Who has given the wild donkey his freedom, who has undone the harness of the brayer?
6 Io gli diedi una dimora nel deserto ed una terra salata ad abitare.	6 I have given him the wastelands as his home, the salt plain as his habitat.
7 Egli disprezza l'affollamento della città e non sente il vociar dell'aguzzino.	7 He scorns the turmoil of the town, obeys no donkey-man's shouts.
8 Vo1ge in giro gli occhi alle montagne di sua pastura e va in traccia d'ogni filo d'erba.	8 The mountains are the pastures that he ranges in quest of anything green.
9 Il rinoceronte vorrà egli servirti? Se ne starà alla tua mangiatoia?	9 Is the wild ox willing to serve you or spend a night beside your manger?
10 Lo legherai al tuo giogo per arare? Romperà dietro a te le zolle delle tue valli?	10 If you tie a rope round his neck wil he harrow the furrows for you?
11 Ti fiderai della sua gran forza? Gli affiderai i tuoi lavori?	11 Can you rely on his massive strength and leave him to do your heavy work?
12 Credi tu che egli ti renda la tua sementè e ti empia la tua aia?	12 Can you depend on him to come home and pile your grain on your threshing-floor?
13 La penna dello struzzo è simile alle penne della cicogna e dello sparviero.	13 Can the wing of the ostrich be compared with the plumage of stork or falcon?
14 Quando egli abbandona le sue ova per terra, sei forse tu che le riscaldi sulla sabbia?	14 She leaves her eggs on the ground with only earth to warm them;
15 Egli non pensa che un piede le potrà schiacciare, che la fiera le potrà calpestare.	15 forgetting that a foot may tread on them or a wild animal crush them.
16 Spietato contro i suoi nati, come se non fossero suoi, rende la sua fatica vana anche non costretto dal timore;	16 Cruel to her chicks as if they were not hers, little she cares if her labour goes for nothing.
17 perché il Signore gli negò la saggezza e non gli diede giudizio.	17 God, you see, has deprived her of wisdom and given her no share of intel igence.
18 Ma quando è tempo stende in alto le sue ali e si burla del cavallo e del cavaliere.	18 Yet, if she bestirs herself to use her height, she can make fools of horse and rider too.
19 Sarai tu quello che darai la forza al destriero e gli vestirai il collo di fremiti?	19 Are you the one who makes the horse so brave and covers his neck with flowing mane?
20 E lo farai saltare come locusta? La fierezza del suo sbuffare atterrisce.	20 Do you make him leap like a grasshopper? His haughty neighing inspires terror.
21 Raspa la terra colla zampa, si slancia con audacia, va incontro agli armati.	21 Exultantly he paws the soil of the val ey, and charges the battle-line in all his strength.
22 Disprezza la paura, non cede alla spada;	22 He laughs at fear; he is afraid of nothing, he recoils before no sword.
23 sopra di lui risonerà il turcasso, scintillerà la lancia e lo scudo.	23 On his back the quiver rattles, the flashing spear and javelin.
24 Spumante e fremente divora la terra, non gli par vero che suoni la tromba.	24 Trembling with impatience, he eats up the miles; when the trumpet sounds, there is no holding him.
25 Sentito lo squillo, dice: Via! Sente da lungi l'odor della battaglia, le esortazioni dei duci e il vociar dei soldati.	25 At each trumpet blast he neighs exultantly. He scents the battle from afar, the thundering of thecommanders and the war cry.
26 Forse per la tua sapienza lo sparviero si veste di piume e spicca il volo verso il mezzodì?	26 Is it your wisdom that sets the hawk flying when he spreads his wings to travel south?
27 Forse al tuo cenno l'aquila si leverà in alto e porrà il suo nido nei luoghi più dovati?	27 Does the eagle soar at your command to make her eyrie in the heights?
28 Sta sopra le rocce, per­notta fra i dirupi scoscesi e sopra vette inaccessibili.	28 She spends her nights among the crags with a needle of rock as her fortress,
29 Di lassù con­templa la preda, e i suoi occhi ve­dono da lontano.	29 from which she watches for prey, fixing it with her far-ranging eye.
30 I suoi aqui­lotti lambiscono il sangue, ed essa si trova dovunque sia un cadavere ».	30 Even her young drink blood; where anyone has been killed, she is there.
31 Poi il Signore, seguitando a parlare, disse a Giobbe:
32 « Chi chiede ragione a Dio s'acquieterà così facilmente? Certo chi critica Dio deve rispondergli ».
33 Allora Giobbe rispose al Signore, dicendo:
34 « Io, che ho parlato con leggerezza, che posso rispondere? Porrò la mia mano sulla mia bocca.
35 H0 detto una cosa, (oh, non l'avessi. detta!) e un'altra, e non dirò più nulla ».
