LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Gesù riprese a parlar loro in parabole e disse:	1 Jesus began to speak to them in parables once again,
2 "E' simile il regno dei cieli a un re il quale fece un banchetto di nozze per suo figlio.	2 'The kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son's wedding.
3 Egli mandò i suoi servi a chiamare coloro che erano stati invitati alle nozze; ma questi non vollero venire.	3 He sent his servants to cal those who had been invited, but they would not come.
4 Di nuovo mandò altri servi dicendo: "Dite agli invitati: ecco, ho preparato il mio pranzo: i miei buoi e gli animali ingrassati sono già stati macellati e tutto è pronto; venite alle nozze".	4 Next he sent some more servants with the words, "Tel those who have been invited: Look, mybanquet is al prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to thewedding."
5 Ma essi, noncuranti, andarono chi ai propri campi, chi ai propri affari.	5 But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business,
6 Altri poi, presi i servi, li maltrattarono e li uccisero.	6 and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and kil ed them.
7 Il re, adiratosi, inviò i suoi eserciti ad annientare quegli omicidi e a incendiarne la città.	7 The king was furious. He despatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town.
8 Dice quindi ai servi: "Il banchetto nuziale è pronto, ma gli invitati non ne erano degni.	8 Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to beunworthy,
9 Andate dunque ai crocicchi delle vie e chiamate alle nozze tutti quelli che troverete".	9 go to the main crossroads and invite everyone you can find to come to the wedding."
10 Andarono quei servi per le vie e radunarono tutti quelli che trovarono, buoni e cattivi; e così la sala si riempì di commensali.	10 So these servants went out onto the roads and col ected together everyone they could find, bad andgood alike; and the wedding hal was fil ed with guests.
11 Entrato il re a vedere i commensali, trovò là un uomo che non indossava la veste nuziale.	11 When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a weddinggarment,
12 Gli dice: "Amico, come mai sei entrato qui senza la veste nuziale?". Egli ammutolì.	12 and said to him, "How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?" And the man wassilent.
13 Allora il re disse ai suoi servitori: "Legatelo mani e piedi e gettatelo nelle tenebre esteriori: là sarà pianto e stridore di denti".	13 Then the king said to the attendants, "Bind him hand and foot and throw him into the darknessoutside, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth."
14 Infatti molti sono chiamati, ma pochi eletti".	14 For many are invited but not al are chosen.'
15 Allora i farisei, ritiratisi, tennero consiglio per vedere come coglierlo in fallo nei suoi discorsi.	15 Then the Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap him in what he said.
16 Mandarono dunque a lui i propri discepoli, insieme agli erodiani, per dirgli: "Maestro, sappiamo che sei veritiero e che insegni la via di Dio con verità e che non hai soggezione di nessuno; infatti non guardi in faccia ad alcuno.	16 And they sent their disciples to him, together with some Herodians, to say, 'Master, we know that youare an honest man and teach the way of God in all honesty, and that you are not afraid of anyone, becausehuman rank means nothing to you.
17 Dicci dunque il tuo parere: è lecito o no pagare il tributo a Cesare?".	17 Give us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?'
18 Gesù, conoscendo la loro malizia, disse: "Perché volete tentarmi, ipocriti?	18 But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, 'You hypocrites! Why are you putting me to thetest?
19 Mostratemi la moneta del tributo". Essi gli presentarono un denaro.	19 Show me the money you pay the tax with.' They handed him a denarius,
20 Dice loro: "Di chi è l'effigie con l'iscrizione?".	20 and he said, 'Whose portrait is this? Whose title?'
21 Rispondono: "Di Cesare". Ed egli disse loro: "Date dunque a Cesare quello che è di Cesare e a Dio quello che è di Dio".	21 They replied, 'Caesar's.' Then he said to them, 'Very wel , pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar -- andGod what belongs to God.'
22 All'udir ciò rimasero stupiti e, lasciatolo, se ne andarono.	22 When they heard this they were amazed; they left him alone and went away.
23 In quel giorno si avvicinarono a lui dei sadducei, quelli che affermano non esserci risurrezione, e lo interrogarono	23 That day some Sadducees -- who deny that there is a resurrection -- approached him and they putthis question to him,
24 dicendo: "Maestro, Mosè ha ordinato: Se uno muore senza figli, suo fratello ne sposerà la vedova e così darà a suo fratello una discendenza.	24 'Master, Moses said that if a man dies childless, his brother is to marry the widow, his sister-in-law, toraise children for his brother.
25 Ora c'erano fra noi sette fratelli. Il primo appena sposato, morì e, non avendo discendenza, lasciò la moglie a suo fratello.	25 Now we had a case involving seven brothers; the first married and then died without children, leavinghis wife to his brother;
26 La stessa cosa accadde al secondo e al terzo, fino al settimo.	26 the same thing happened with the second and third and so on to the seventh,
27 Dopo di tutti, morì anche la donna.	27 and then last of al the woman herself died.
28 Ora, nella risurrezione, di chi fra i sette sarà moglie? Infatti appartenne a tutti".	28 Now at the resurrection, whose wife among the seven wil she be, since she had been married tothem al ?'
29 Gesù rispose: "Siete in errore, poiché non conoscete le Scritture né la potenza di Dio.	29 Jesus answered them, 'You are wrong, because you understand neither the scriptures nor the powerof God.
30 Infatti nella risurrezione non si prende né moglie né marito, ma si è come angeli di Dio in cielo.	30 For at the resurrection men and women do not marry; no, they are like the angels in heaven.
31 Quanto poi alla risurrezione dei morti, non avete letto ciò che a voi disse Dio:	31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you never read what God himself said to you:
32 Io sono il Dio di Abramo, il Dio di Isacco, il Dio di Giacobbe? Dio non è un Dio di morti, ma di viventi".	32 I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He is God, not of the dead, but ofthe living.'
33 All'udir ciò, le folle rimanevano stupite per la sua dottrina.	33 And his teaching made a deep impression on the people who heard it.
34 I farisei, saputo che Gesù aveva messo a tacere i sadducei, si radunarono insieme,	34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together
35 e uno di loro, dottore della legge, lo interrogò per metterlo alla prova:	35 and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question,
36 "Maestro, qual è il precetto più grande della legge?".	36 'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?'
37 Egli rispose: "Amerai il Signore Dio tuo con tutto il tuo cuore, con tutta la tua anima, con tutta la tua mente.	37 Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with al your heart, with al your soul, and with alyour mind.
38 Questo è il più grande e il primo dei precetti.	38 This is the greatest and the first commandment.
39 Ma il secondo è simile ad esso: Amerai il prossimo tuo come te stesso.	39 The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself.
40 Da questi due precetti dipende tutta la legge e i profeti".	40 On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.'
41 Radunatisi i farisei, Gesù li interrogò	41 While the Pharisees were gathered round, Jesus put to them this question,
42 dicendo: "Che cosa pensate del Cristo? Di chi è figlio?". Gli rispondono: "Di Davide".	42 'What is your opinion about the Christ? Whose son is he?' They told him, 'David's.'
43 Dice loro: "Come dunque Davide, sotto l'influsso dello Spirito, lo chiama Signore quando dice:	43 He said to them, 'Then how is it that David, moved by the Spirit, cal s him Lord, where he says:
44 Ha detto il Signore al mio Signore: Siedi alla mia destra finché ponga i tuoi nemici come sgabello dei tuoi piedi?	44 The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at my right hand, til I have made your enemies yourfootstool?
45 Se, dunque, Davide lo chiama Signore, come può essere suo figlio?".	45 'If David cal s him Lord, how then can he be his son?'
46 Nessuno seppe rispondergli una parola; e da quel giorno nessuno osò più fargli delle domande.	46 No one could think of anything to say in reply, and from that day no one dared to ask him any furtherquestions.
