1 Then Elihu continued and said:	1 - Ed Eliu continuando a parlare disse:
2 Hear, O wise men, my discourse, and you that have knowledge, hear me!	2 «Ascoltate, o sapienti, le mie parole, e voi, forniti di scienza, uditemi;
3 For the ear tests words, as the taste does food.	3 poichè l'orecchio discerne le parole, come la gola giudica al giusto i cibi.
4 Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn between us what is good.	4 Il diritto noi dobbiamo scegliere, e conoscere fra noi ciò ch'è meglio.
5 For Job has said, "I am innocent, but God has taken what is my due.	5 Giobbe infatti ha detto: - Io sono giusto, ma Dio ha tolto via il mio diritto;
6 Notwithstanding my right I am set at nought; in my wound the arrow rankles, sinless though I am."	6 nel mio giudizio infatti v'è una menzogna: acuta è la freccia di chi mi [ha colpito] senza veruna colpa.
7 What man is like Job? He drinks in blasphemies like water,	7 Qual uomo mai è come Giobbe, che tracanna lo scherno [verso Dio] come acqua?
8 Keeps company with evildoers and goes along with wicked men,	8 che procede d'accordo con quelli che operano il male, e batte la strada degli empii?
9 When he says, "It profits a man nought that he is pleasing to God."	9 Egli infatti ha detto: - All'uomo non giova, metter la sua compiacenza in Dio. -
10 Therefore, men of understanding, hearken to me: far be it from God to do wickedness; far from the Almighty to do wrong!	10 Perciò, o uomini di mente, ascoltatemi:Lungi da Dio l'empietà, e dall'Onnipotente l'iniquità!
11 Rather, he requites men for their conduct, and brings home to a man his way of life.	11 Egli invero ripaga all'uomo l'opera sua, e qual è la via di ciascuno, gli fa trovar [la mèta];
12 Surely, God cannot act wickedly, the Almighty cannot violate justice.	12 poichè certamente egli non condanna senza motivo, e l'Onnipotente non viola il diritto.
13 Who gave him government over the earth, or who else set all the land in its place?	13 Ha forse egli costituito un altro a capo della terra? ovvero ha affidato a un altro l'orbe ch'ei fabbricò?
14 If he were to take back his spirit to himself, withdraw to himself his breath,	14 Se egli ritirasse a sè il suo alito, ed il suo soffio a sè raccogliesse,
15 All flesh would perish together, and man would return to the dust.	15 perirebbe ad un tratto ogni carne [vivente], e l'uomo ritornerebbe in polvere.
16 Now, do you, O Job, hear this! Hearken to the words I speak!	16 Se hai dunque intelligenza ascolta ciò che [ti] si dice, e porgi orecchio al suono del mio discorso.
17 Can an enemy of justice indeed be in control, or will you condemn the supreme Just One,	17 Può forse governare chi non ama il diritto? e tu come puoi condannare in tal guisa colui ch'è il Giusto?
18 Who says to a king, "You are worthless!" and to nobles, "You are wicked!"	18 colui che dice al re: - O indegno! -che verso i principi esclama: - O empii! -
19 Who neither favors the person of princes, nor respects the rich more than the poor? For they are all the work of his hands;	19 che non ha riguardo alle persone dei nobili, nè riconosce il tiranno in contrasto col povero: poichè opera delle sue mani son tutti quanti,
20 in a moment they die, even at midnight. He brings on nobles, and takes them away, removing the powerful without lifting a hand;	20 all'istante essi muoiono e nel cuor della notte. Sono sconvolti i popoli e via passeranno, sarà rapito il violento senza che alcun lo tocchi.
21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he beholds all his steps.	21 Poichè gli occhi di Lui son sulle vie degli uomini, e tutti i loro passi egli esamina;
22 There is no darkness so dense that evildoers can hide in it.	22 non v'è tenebra nè ombra di morte, ove asconder si possano gli operanti il male;
23 For he forewarns no man of his time to come before God in judgment.	23 nè è più oltre in poter dell'uomodi comparir davanti a Dio a giudizio.
24 Without a trial he breaks the mighty, and sets others in their stead,	24 Egli infrange molti e innumerevoli, e pone degli altri in luogo loro;
25 Therefore he discerns their works; he turns at night and crushes them.	25 poichè conosce le opere loro, e per questo adduce la notte e sono schiacciati.
	26 Come empii ei colpisce ov'è chi contempli,
27 Because they turned away from him and heeded none of his ways,	27 perchè a industria si allontanarono da luie nessuna delle sue vie vollero comprendere;
28 But caused the cries of the poor to reach him, so that he heard the plea of the afflicted.	28 cosicchè fecero giungere a lui il grido del meschino, e gli fecero udire la voce del povero.
29 If he remains tranquil, who then can condemn? If he hides his face, who then can behold him?	29 Se egli infatti concede pace, chi lo condannerà? se nasconde il suo volto chi può scorgerlo? Sia sulle genti che su tutti gli uomini [domina egli]
	30 che fa regnare il malvagio per i peccati del popolo.
31 When anyone says to God, "I was misguided; I will offend no more.	31 Poichè dunque io ho parlato a Dio, non impedirò [altrettanto] a te.
32 Teach me wherein I have sinned; if I have done wrong, I will do so no more,"	32 Se ho errato, tu ammaestrami, se ho dette cose empie, non insisterò.
33 Would you then say that God must punish, since you reject what he is doing? It is you who must choose, not I; speak, therefore, what you know.	33 Forse Dio ne chiederà conto a teperchè ti sono dispiaciute? Eppur tu cominciasti a parlare, non io: chè se tu sai alcunchè di meglio, parla.
34 Men of understanding will say to me, every wise man who hears my views:	34 Gli uomini intelligenti parlino a me, e l'uomo sapiente mi ascolti.
35 "Job speaks without intelligence, and his words are without sense."	35 Giobbe invece ha parlato stoltamente, e le sue sentenze non sanno d'accortezza.
36 Let Job be tried to the limit, since his answers are those of the impious;	36 Padre mio! sia messo Giobbe alla prova sino alla fine, nè cessar con l'uomo malvagio;
37 For he is adding rebellion to his sin by brushing off our arguments and addressing many words to God.	37 poichè ai suoi peccati aggiunge la bestemmia, stringiamolo frattanto tra di noi, e allor provochi a giudizio Dio coi suoi discorsi.»
