Job 34

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 Then Elihu continued and said:	1 Elihu reprit son discours et dit:
2 Hear, O wise men, my discourse, and you that have knowledge, hear me!	2 Et vous, les sages, écoutez mes paroles, vous, les savants, prêtez-moi l'oreille.
3 For the ear tests words, as the taste does food.	3 Car l'oreille apprécie les discours comme le palais goûte les mets.
4 Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn between us what is good.	4 Examinons ensemble ce qui est juste, voyons entre nous ce qui est bien.
5 For Job has said, "I am innocent, but God has taken what is my due.	5 Job a dit: "Je suis juste et Dieu écarte mon droit.
6 Notwithstanding my right I am set at nought; in my wound the arrow rankles, sinless though I am."	6 Mon juge envers moi se montre cruel; ma plaie est incurable sans crime de ma part."
7 What man is like Job? He drinks in blasphemies like water,	7 Où trouver un homme tel que Job, qui boive le sarcasme comme l'eau,
8 Keeps company with evildoers and goes along with wicked men,	8 fasse route avec les malfaiteurs, marche du même pas que les méchants?
9 When he says, "It profits a man nought that he is pleasing to God."	9 N'a-t-il pas dit: "L'homme ne tire aucun profit à se plaire dans la société de Dieu?"
10 Therefore, men of understanding, hearken to me: far be it from God to do wickedness; far from the Almighty to do wrong!	10 Aussi écoutez-moi, en hommes de sens. Qu'on écarte de Dieu le mal, de Shaddaï, l'injustice!
11 Rather, he requites men for their conduct, and brings home to a man his way of life.	11 Car il rend à l'homme selon ses oeuvres, traite chacun d'après sa conduite.
12 Surely, God cannot act wickedly, the Almighty cannot violate justice.	12 En vérité, Dieu n'agit jamais mal, Shaddaï ne pervertit pas le droit.
13 Who gave him government over the earth, or who else set all the land in its place?	13 Autrement qui donc aurait confié la terre à ses soins, l'aurait chargé de l'univers entier?
14 If he were to take back his spirit to himself, withdraw to himself his breath,	14 S'il ramenait à lui son esprit, s'il concentrait en lui son souffle,
15 All flesh would perish together, and man would return to the dust.	15 toute chair expirerait à la fois et l'homme retournerait à la poussière.
16 Now, do you, O Job, hear this! Hearken to the words I speak!	16 Si tu sais comprendre, écoute ceci, prête l'oreille au son de mes paroles.
17 Can an enemy of justice indeed be in control, or will you condemn the supreme Just One,	17 Un ennemi du droit saurait-il gouverner? Oserais-tu condamner le Juste tout-puissant?
18 Who says to a king, "You are worthless!" and to nobles, "You are wicked!"	18 Lui, qui dit à un roi: "Vaurien!" traite les nobles de méchants,
19 Who neither favors the person of princes, nor respects the rich more than the poor? For they are all the work of his hands;	19 n'a pas égard aux princes et ne distingue pas du faible l'homme important. Car tous sont l'oeuvre deses mains.
20 in a moment they die, even at midnight. He brings on nobles, and takes them away, removing the powerful without lifting a hand;	20 Ils meurent soudain en pleine nuit, les grands périssent et disparaissent, et il écarte un tyran sanseffort.
21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he beholds all his steps.	21 Car ses yeux surveillent les voies de l'homme et il observe tous ses pas.
22 There is no darkness so dense that evildoers can hide in it.	22 Pas de ténèbres ou d'ombre épaisse où puissent se cacher les malfaiteurs.
23 For he forewarns no man of his time to come before God in judgment.	23 Il n'envoie pas d'assignation à l'homme, pour qu'il se présente devant Dieu en justice.
24 Without a trial he breaks the mighty, and sets others in their stead,	24 Il brise les grands sans enquête et en met d'autres à leur place.
25 Therefore he discerns their works; he turns at night and crushes them.	25 C'est qu'il connaît leurs oeuvres! Il les renverse de nuit et on les piétine.
	26 Comme des criminels, il les soufflette, en public il les enchaîné,
27 Because they turned away from him and heeded none of his ways,	27 car ils se sont détournés de lui, n'ont rien compris à ses voies,
28 But caused the cries of the poor to reach him, so that he heard the plea of the afflicted.	28 jusqu'à faire monter vers lui le cri du faible, lui faire entendre l'appel des humbles.
29 If he remains tranquil, who then can condemn? If he hides his face, who then can behold him?	29 Mais s'il reste immobile sans que nul ne l'ébranle, s'il voile sa face sans se laisser apercevoir, c'estqu'il prend en pitié nations et individus,
	30 délivre un impie des filets de l'affliction,
31 When anyone says to God, "I was misguided; I will offend no more.	31 quand celui-ci dit à Dieu: "Je fus séduit, je ne ferai plus le mal;
32 Teach me wherein I have sinned; if I have done wrong, I will do so no more,"	32 si j'ai péché, instruis-moi, si j'ai commis l'injustice, je ne recommencerai plus."
33 Would you then say that God must punish, since you reject what he is doing? It is you who must choose, not I; speak, therefore, what you know.	33 Est-ce que, d'après toi, il devrait punir, puisque tu rejettes ses décisions? Comme c'est toi qui choisiset non pas moi, fais-nous part de ta science.
34 Men of understanding will say to me, every wise man who hears my views:	34 Mais les gens sensés me diront, ainsi que tout sage qui m'écoute:
35 "Job speaks without intelligence, and his words are without sense."	35 "Job ne parle pas avec science, ses propos manquent d'intelligence.
36 Let Job be tried to the limit, since his answers are those of the impious;	36 Veuille donc l'examiner à fond, pour ses réponses dignes de celles des méchants.
37 For he is adding rebellion to his sin by brushing off our arguments and addressing many words to God.	37 Car il ajoute à son péché la rébellion, met fin au droit parmi nous et multiplie contre Dieu sesparoles."
