LXXNEW JERUSALEM
υπολαβων δε ελιφας ο θαιμανιτης λεγει1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:
ποτερον ουχι ο κυριος εστιν ο διδασκων συνεσιν και επιστημην2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?
τι γαρ μελει τω κυριω εαν συ ησθα τοις εργοις αμεμπτος η ωφελεια οτι απλωσης την οδον σου3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?
η λογον σου ποιουμενος ελεγξει σε και συνεισελευσεται σοι εις κρισιν4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?
ποτερον ουχ η κακια σου εστιν πολλη αναριθμητοι δε σου εισιν αι αμαρτιαι5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!
ηνεχυραζες δε τους αδελφους σου δια κενης αμφιασιν δε γυμνων αφειλου6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,
ουδε υδωρ διψωντας εποτισας αλλα πεινωντων εστερησας ψωμον7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;
εθαυμασας δε τινων προσωπον ωκισας δε τους επι της γης8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,
χηρας δε εξαπεστειλας κενας ορφανους δε εκακωσας9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.
τοιγαρουν εκυκλωσαν σε παγιδες και εσπουδασεν σε πολεμος εξαισιος10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;
το φως σοι σκοτος απεβη κοιμηθεντα δε υδωρ σε εκαλυψεν11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.
μη ουχι ο τα υψηλα ναιων εφορα τους δε υβρει φερομενους εταπεινωσεν12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?
και ειπας τι εγνω ο ισχυρος η κατα του γνοφου κρινει13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?
νεφη αποκρυφη αυτου και ουχ οραθησεται και γυρον ουρανου διαπορευσεται14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'
μη τριβον αιωνιον φυλαξεις ην επατησαν ανδρες αδικοι15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,
οι συνελημφθησαν αωροι ποταμος επιρρεων οι θεμελιοι αυτων16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,
οι λεγοντες κυριος τι ποιησει ημιν η τι επαξεται ημιν ο παντοκρατωρ17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'
ος δε ενεπλησεν τους οικους αυτων αγαθων βουλη δε ασεβων πορρω απ' αυτου18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!
ιδοντες δικαιοι εγελασαν αμεμπτος δε εμυκτηρισεν19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:
ει μη ηφανισθη η υποστασις αυτων και το καταλειμμα αυτων καταφαγεται πυρ20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'
γενου δη σκληρος εαν υπομεινης ειτ' ο καρπος σου εσται εν αγαθοις21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.
εκλαβε δε εκ στοματος αυτου εξηγοριαν και αναλαβε τα ρηματα αυτου εν καρδια σου22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.
εαν δε επιστραφης και ταπεινωσης σεαυτον εναντι κυριου πορρω εποιησας απο διαιτης σου το αδικον23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,
θηση επι χωματι εν πετρα και ως πετρα χειμαρρους ωφιρ24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,
εσται ουν σου ο παντοκρατωρ βοηθος απο εχθρων καθαρον δε αποδωσει σε ωσπερ αργυριον πεπυρωμενον25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.
ειτα παρρησιασθηση εναντι κυριου αναβλεψας εις τον ουρανον ιλαρως26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.
ευξαμενου δε σου προς αυτον εισακουσεται σου δωσει δε σοι αποδουναι τας ευχας27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.
αποκαταστησει δε σοι διαιταν δικαιοσυνης επι δε οδοις σου εσται φεγγος28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;
οτι εταπεινωσεν αυτον και ερεις υπερηφανευσατο και κυφοντα οφθαλμοις σωσει29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.
ρυσεται αθωον και διασωθητι εν καθαραις χερσιν σου30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.
