υπολαβων δε ελιφας ο θαιμανιτης λεγει | 1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said: |
ποτερον ουχι ο κυριος εστιν ο διδασκων συνεσιν και επιστημην | 2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself? |
τι γαρ μελει τω κυριω εαν συ ησθα τοις εργοις αμεμπτος η ωφελεια οτι απλωσης την οδον σου | 3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct? |
η λογον σου ποιουμενος ελεγξει σε και συνεισελευσεται σοι εις κρισιν | 4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that? |
ποτερον ουχ η κακια σου εστιν πολλη αναριθμητοι δε σου εισιν αι αμαρτιαι | 5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins! |
ηνεχυραζες δε τους αδελφους σου δια κενης αμφιασιν δε γυμνων αφειλου | 6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes, |
ουδε υδωρ διψωντας εποτισας αλλα πεινωντων εστερησας ψωμον | 7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry; |
εθαυμασας δε τινων προσωπον ωκισας δε τους επι της γης | 8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in, |
χηρας δε εξαπεστειλας κενας ορφανους δε εκακωσας | 9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans. |
τοιγαρουν εκυκλωσαν σε παγιδες και εσπουδασεν σε πολεμος εξαισιος | 10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid; |
το φως σοι σκοτος απεβη κοιμηθεντα δε υδωρ σε εκαλυψεν | 11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood. |
μη ουχι ο τα υψηλα ναιων εφορα τους δε υβρει φερομενους εταπεινωσεν | 12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars? |
και ειπας τι εγνω ο ισχυρος η κατα του γνοφου κρινει | 13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud? |
νεφη αποκρυφη αυτου και ουχ οραθησεται και γυρον ουρανου διαπορευσεται | 14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.' |
μη τριβον αιωνιον φυλαξεις ην επατησαν ανδρες αδικοι | 15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked, |
οι συνελημφθησαν αωροι ποταμος επιρρεων οι θεμελιοι αυτων | 16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood, |
οι λεγοντες κυριος τι ποιησει ημιν η τι επαξεται ημιν ο παντοκρατωρ | 17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?' |
ος δε ενεπλησεν τους οικους αυτων αγαθων βουλη δε ασεβων πορρω απ' αυτου | 18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked! |
ιδοντες δικαιοι εγελασαν αμεμπτος δε εμυκτηρισεν | 19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them: |
ει μη ηφανισθη η υποστασις αυτων και το καταλειμμα αυτων καταφαγεται πυρ | 20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!' |
γενου δη σκληρος εαν υπομεινης ειτ' ο καρπος σου εσται εν αγαθοις | 21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you. |
εκλαβε δε εκ στοματος αυτου εξηγοριαν και αναλαβε τα ρηματα αυτου εν καρδια σου | 22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart. |
εαν δε επιστραφης και ταπεινωσης σεαυτον εναντι κυριου πορρω εποιησας απο διαιτης σου το αδικον | 23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent, |
θηση επι χωματι εν πετρα και ως πετρα χειμαρρους ωφιρ | 24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent, |
εσται ουν σου ο παντοκρατωρ βοηθος απο εχθρων καθαρον δε αποδωσει σε ωσπερ αργυριον πεπυρωμενον | 25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps. |
ειτα παρρησιασθηση εναντι κυριου αναβλεψας εις τον ουρανον ιλαρως | 26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God. |
ευξαμενου δε σου προς αυτον εισακουσεται σου δωσει δε σοι αποδουναι τας ευχας | 27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows. |
αποκαταστησει δε σοι διαιταν δικαιοσυνης επι δε οδοις σου εσται φεγγος | 28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path; |
οτι εταπεινωσεν αυτον και ερεις υπερηφανευσατο και κυφοντα οφθαλμοις σωσει | 29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes. |
ρυσεται αθωον και διασωθητι εν καθαραις χερσιν σου | 30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved. |
