DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 E GIOBBE rispose, e disse:	1 Job spoke next. He said:
2 Sì, veramente voi siete tutt’un popolo, E la sapienza morrà con voi.	2 Doubtless, you are the voice of the people, and when you die, wisdom wil die with you!
3 Anch’io ho senno come voi; Io non sono da men di voi; Ed appo cui non sono cotali cose?	3 But I have a brain, as well as you, I am in no way inferior to you, and who, in any case, does not know al that?
4 Io son quell’uomo ch’è schernito dal suo amico; Ma un tale invoca Iddio, ed egli gli risponderà; L’uomo giusto ed intiero è schernito.	4 Anyone becomes a laughing-stock to his friends if he cries to God and expects an answer. Peoplelaugh at anyone who has integrity and is upright.
5 Colui che sta per isdrucciolare col piè, E, per estimazione di chi è felice, un tizzone sprezzato	5 'Add insult to injury,' think the prosperous, 'strike the fel ow now that he is staggering!'
6 I tabernacoli de’ ladroni prosperano, E v’è ogni sicurtà per quelli che dispettano Iddio, Nelle cui mani egli fa cadere ciò che desiderano.	6 And yet the tents of brigands are left in peace: those who provoke God dwel secure and so doesanyone who makes a god of his fist!
7 E in vero, domandane pur le bestie, ed esse tu l’insegneranno; E gli uccelli del cielo, ed essi te lo dichiareranno;	7 You have only to ask the cattle, for them to instruct you, and the birds of the sky, for them to informyou.
8 Ovvero, ragionane con la terra, ed essa te l’insegnerà; I pesci del mare eziandio te lo racconteranno.	8 The creeping things of earth wil give you lessons, and the fish of the sea provide you an explanation:
9 Fra tutte queste creature, Quale è quella che non sappia che la mano del Signore fa questo?	9 there is not one such creature but wil know that the hand of God has arranged things like this!
10 Nella cui mano è l’anima d’ogni uomo vivente, E lo spirito d’ogni carne umana.	10 In his hand is the soul of every living thing and the breath of every human being!
11 L’orecchio non prova egli le parole, Come il palato assapora le vivande?	11 Can the ear not distinguish the value of what is said, just as the palate can tel one food fromanother?
12 Ne’ vecchi è la sapienza, E nella grande età è la prudenza.	12 Wisdom is found in the old, and discretion comes with great age.
13 Appo lui è la sapienza e la forza; A lui appartiene il consiglio e l’intelligenza.	13 But in him there is wisdom, and power too, and good counsel no less than discretion.
14 Ecco, se egli ruina, la cosa non può esser riedificata; Se serra alcuno, non gli può essere aperto.	14 What he destroys, no one can rebuild; whom he imprisons, no one can release.
15 Ecco, se egli rattiene le acque, elle si seccano; E se le lascia scorrere, rivoltano la terra sottosopra.	15 Is there a drought? He has withheld the waters. Do they play havoc on earth? He has let them loose.
16 Appo lui è forza e ragione; A lui appartiene chi erra, e chi fa errare.	16 In him is strength, in him resourcefulness, beguiler and beguiled alike are his.
17 Egli ne mena i consiglieri spogliati, E fa impazzare i giudici.	17 He robs a country's counsel ors of their wits, turns judges into fools.
18 Egli scioglie il legame dei re, E stringe la cinghia sopra i lor propri lombi.	18 He undoes the belts of kings and knots a rope round their waists.
19 Egli ne mena i rettori spogliati, E sovverte i possenti.	19 He makes priests walk barefoot, and overthrows the powers that are established.
20 Egli toglie la favella agli eloquenti, E leva il senno a’ vecchi.	20 He strikes the most assured of speakers dumb and robs old people of their discretion.
21 Egli spande lo sprezzo sopra i nobili, E rallenta la cintura de’ possenti.	21 He pours contempt on the nobly born, and unbuckles the belt of the strong.
22 Egli rivela le cose profonde, traendole fuor delle tenebre; E mette fuori alla luce l’ombra della morte.	22 He unveils the depths of darkness, brings shadow dark as death to the light.
23 Egli accresce le nazioni, ed altesì le distrugge; Egli sparge le genti, ed altresì le riduce insieme.	23 He builds nations up, then ruins them, he makes peoples expand, then suppresses them.
24 Egli toglie il senno a’ capi de’ popoli della terra, E li fa andar vagando per luoghi deserti, ove non ha via alcuna.	24 He strips a country's leaders of their judgement, and leaves them to wander in a trackless waste,
25 Vanno a tentone per le tenebre, senza luce alcuna: Ed egli li fa andare errando come un uomo ebbro	25 to grope about in unlit darkness, lurching to and fro as though drunk.
