LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Strinsi un patto con i miei occhi, di non fissare lo sguardo sulle ragazze.	1 I had made an agreement with my eyes not to linger on any virgin.
2 Qual è la sorte che Dio ha assegnato dall'alto, e l'eredità che l'Onnipotente ha preparato dai luoghi eccelsi?	2 Now what portion does God al ot from above, what fate does Shaddai apportion from his heaven-
3 Non è forse la sciagura per il perverso e la sventura per chi compie il male?	3 if not the disasters appropriate to the wicked and the calamities fit for evil-doers?
4 Non vede egli la mia condotta e non conta tutti i miei passi?	4 But surely he sees how I behave, does he not count all my steps?
5 Ho forse agito con falsità, e il mio piede si è affrettato verso la frode?	5 Have I been a fel ow-travel er with falsehood, or hastened my steps towards deceit?
6 Mi pesi pure sulla bilancia della giustizia e riconosca Dio la mia integrità!	6 Let him weigh me on accurate scales: then he, God, will recognise my integrity!
7 Se il mio passo ha errato fuori strada e il mio cuore ha seguito i miei occhi, o una sozzura si è attaccata alle mie mani,	7 If my feet have wandered from the rightful path, or if my eyes have led my heart astray, or if my handsare smirched with any stain,
8 un altro mangi ciò che io semino e siano sradicati i miei germogli!	8 let someone else eat what I have sown and let my young shoots all be rooted out.
9 Se il mio cuore fu sedotto da una donna, e ho spiato alla porta del mio prossimo,	9 If my heart has been seduced by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbour's door,
10 mia moglie macini per un altro, e altri si accostino ad essa!	10 let my wife go and grind for someone else, let others have intercourse with her!
11 In verità, questa è un'infamia, un delitto da deferire ai giudici.	11 For I would have committed a sin of lust, a crime punishable by the law,
12 Quello è un fuoco che divora fino alla distruzione, e avrebbe consumato tutto il mio raccolto.	12 a fire, indeed, burning al to Perdition, which would have devoured my whole revenue.
13 Se ho negato il diritto del mio schiavo e della mia schiava, quando erano in lite con me,	13 If I have ever infringed the rights of slave or slave-girl in legal actions against me-
14 che cosa farei, quando Dio si ergerà giudice, che cosa risponderei, quando mi interrogherà?	14 what shal I do, when God stands up? What shal I say, when he holds his assize?
15 Chi ha fatto me nel seno materno, non ha fatto anche lui? Non fu lo stesso a formarci nel seno?	15 Did he not create them in the womb like me, the same God forming us in the womb?
16 Ho forse negato ai poveri quanto desideravano, od ho lasciato languire gli occhi della vedova?	16 Have I been insensible to the needs of the poor, or let a widow's eyes grow dim?
17 Ho forse mangiato da solo il mio tozzo di pane, senza spartirlo con l'orfano?	17 Have I eaten my bit of bread on my own without sharing it with the orphan?
18 Infatti fin dalla mia giovinezza mi ha curato come padre e mi ha guidato fin dal grembo di mia madre.	18 I, whom God has fostered father-like from childhood, and guided since I left my mother's womb,
19 Se mai ho visto un misero privo di vesti e un indigente senza abito,	19 have I ever seen a wretch in need of clothing, or the poor with nothing to wear,
20 non mi hanno forse benedetto i suoi fianchi, e non si è forse riscaldato con la lana dei miei agnelli?	20 without his having cause to bless me from his heart, as he felt the warmth of the fleece from mylambs?
21 Se ho alzato la mano contro l'orfano sapendomi appoggiato al tribunale,	21 Have I raised my hand against an orphan, presuming on my credit at the gate?
22 mi si stacchi la spalla dalla nuca e il mio braccio si spezzi dal gomito!	22 If so, let my shoulder fal from its socket, let my arm break off at the elbow!
23 Perché mi atterra la disgrazia che Dio invia, non reggerei davanti alla sua maestà.	23 For the terror of God would fal on me and I could not then stand my ground before his majesty.
24 Ho forse riposto la mia fiducia nell'oro, e detto all'oro fino: "Tu sei la mia sicurezza"?	24 Have I put my faith in gold, saying to fine gold, 'Ah, my security'?
25 Mi sono forse compiaciuto dell'abbondanza dei miei beni, e perché la mia mano aveva accumulato la ricchezza?	25 Have I ever gloated over my great wealth, or the riches that my hands have won?
26 Quando vedevo risplendere il sole e la luna che avanzava maestosa,	26 Or has the sight of the sun in its glory, or the glow of the moon as it walked the sky,
27 si lasciò forse sedurre segretamente il mio cuore, mandando un bacio con la mano alla bocca?	27 secretly stolen my heart, so that I blew them a kiss?
28 Anche questo è un delitto per i giudici, perché avrei rinnegato Dio che sta in alto.	28 That too would be a criminal offence, to have denied the supreme God.
29 Mi sono forse rallegrato della disgrazia del mio nemico, e ho esultato, perché lo colpì la sventura?	29 Have I rejoiced at my enemy's misfortune, or exulted when disaster overtook him? -
30 Non ho neppure permesso alla mia bocca di peccare, augurandogli la sua morte con un'imprecazione!	30 I, who would not allow my tongue to sin or to lay his life under a curse.
31 Non diceva forse la gente della mia tenda: "Chi non si è sfamato della sua mensa?".	31 The people of my tent, did they not say, 'Will anyone name a person whom he has not fil ed withmeat?'
32 Il forestiero non passava la notte all'aperto; io aprivo le porte al pellegrino.	32 No stranger ever had to sleep outside, my door was always open to the traveller.
33 Ho forse occultato come un uomo i miei peccati, tenendo celato il mio delitto dentro di me	33 Have I ever concealed my transgression from others or kept my fault a secret in my breast?
34 per timore dell'opinione delle folle, come se il disprezzo della famiglia mi spaventasse, sì da starmene zitto senza uscir di casa?	34 Have I ever stood in fear of common gossip, or dreaded any family's contempt, and so kept quiet, notventuring out of doors?
35 Oh, avessi uno che mi ascoltasse! Ecco la mia firma! L'Onnipotente mi risponda! Il mio rivale scriva il suo rotolo:	35 Will no one give me a hearing? I have said my last word; now let Shaddai reply! When my adversaryhas drafted his writ against me
36 lo porterei sulle mie spalle e me lo cingerei come un diadema.	36 I shall wear it on my shoulder, and bind it round my head like a royal turban.
37 Gli darei resoconto di tutta la mia condotta; mi presenterei a lui come un principe.	37 I shall give him an account of my every step and go as boldly as a prince to meet him.End of thewords of Job.
38 Se la mia terra ha gridato contro di me e i suoi solchi hanno pianto con essa,	38 If my land cries for vengeance against me and its furrows weep in concert,
39 se ho mangiato i suoi frutti senza pagamento, facendo esalare l'ultimo respiro ai suoi coltivatori,	39 if I have eaten its produce without paying, and caused the death of its owners,
40 le spine crescano invece del frumento e le ortiche al posto dell'orzo!". Fine delle parole di Giobbe.	40 let brambles grow instead of wheat, rank weeds instead of barley!
