1 Strinsi un patto con i miei occhi, di non fissare lo sguardo sulle ragazze.	1 If I have made an agreement with my eyes and entertained any thoughts against a maiden;
2 Qual è la sorte che Dio ha assegnato dall'alto, e l'eredità che l'Onnipotente ha preparato dai luoghi eccelsi?	2 But what is man's lot from God above, his inheritance from the Almighty on high?
3 Non è forse la sciagura per il perverso e la sventura per chi compie il male?	3 Is it not calamity for the unrighteous, and woe for evildoers?
4 Non vede egli la mia condotta e non conta tutti i miei passi?	4 Does he not see my ways, and number all my steps?
5 Ho forse agito con falsità, e il mio piede si è affrettato verso la frode?	5 If I have walked in falsehood and my foot has hastened to deceit;
6 Mi pesi pure sulla bilancia della giustizia e riconosca Dio la mia integrità!	6 Let God weigh me in the scales of justice; thus will he know my innocence!
7 Se il mio passo ha errato fuori strada e il mio cuore ha seguito i miei occhi, o una sozzura si è attaccata alle mie mani,	7 If my steps have turned out of the way, and my heart has followed my eyes, or any stain clings to my hands,
8 un altro mangi ciò che io semino e siano sradicati i miei germogli!	8 Then may I sow, but another eat of it, or may my planting be rooted up!
9 Se il mio cuore fu sedotto da una donna, e ho spiato alla porta del mio prossimo,	9 If my heart has been enticed toward a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door;
10 mia moglie macini per un altro, e altri si accostino ad essa!	10 Then may my wife grind for another, and may others cohabit with her!
11 In verità, questa è un'infamia, un delitto da deferire ai giudici.	11 For that would be heinous, a crime to be condemned;
12 Quello è un fuoco che divora fino alla distruzione, e avrebbe consumato tutto il mio raccolto.	12 A fire that should burn down to the abyss till it consumed all my possessions to the roots.
13 Se ho negato il diritto del mio schiavo e della mia schiava, quando erano in lite con me,	13 Had I refused justice to my manservant or to my maid, when they had a claim against me,
14 che cosa farei, quando Dio si ergerà giudice, che cosa risponderei, quando mi interrogherà?	14 What then should I do when God rose up; what could I answer when he demanded an account?
15 Chi ha fatto me nel seno materno, non ha fatto anche lui? Non fu lo stesso a formarci nel seno?	15 Did not he who made me in the womb make him? Did not the same One fashion us before our birth?
16 Ho forse negato ai poveri quanto desideravano, od ho lasciato languire gli occhi della vedova?	16 If I have denied anything to the poor, or allowed the eyes of the widow to languish
17 Ho forse mangiato da solo il mio tozzo di pane, senza spartirlo con l'orfano?	17 While I ate my portion alone, with no share in it for the fatherless,
18 Infatti fin dalla mia giovinezza mi ha curato come padre e mi ha guidato fin dal grembo di mia madre.	18 Though like a father God has reared me from my youth, guiding me even from my mother's womb--
19 Se mai ho visto un misero privo di vesti e un indigente senza abito,	19 If I have seen a wanderer without clothing, or a poor man without covering,
20 non mi hanno forse benedetto i suoi fianchi, e non si è forse riscaldato con la lana dei miei agnelli?	20 Whose limbs have not blessed me when warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
21 Se ho alzato la mano contro l'orfano sapendomi appoggiato al tribunale,	21 If I have raised my hand against the innocent because I saw that I had supporters at the gate--
22 mi si stacchi la spalla dalla nuca e il mio braccio si spezzi dal gomito!	22 Then may my arm fall from the shoulder, my forearm be broken at the elbow!
23 Perché mi atterra la disgrazia che Dio invia, non reggerei davanti alla sua maestà.	23 For the dread of God will be upon me, and his majesty will overpower me.
24 Ho forse riposto la mia fiducia nell'oro, e detto all'oro fino: "Tu sei la mia sicurezza"?	24 Had I put my trust in gold or called fine gold my security;
25 Mi sono forse compiaciuto dell'abbondanza dei miei beni, e perché la mia mano aveva accumulato la ricchezza?	25 Or had I rejoiced that my wealth was great, or that my hand had acquired abundance--
26 Quando vedevo risplendere il sole e la luna che avanzava maestosa,	26 Had I looked upon the sun as it shone, or the moon in the splendor of its progress,
27 si lasciò forse sedurre segretamente il mio cuore, mandando un bacio con la mano alla bocca?	27 And had my heart been secretly enticed to waft them a kiss with my hand;
28 Anche questo è un delitto per i giudici, perché avrei rinnegato Dio che sta in alto.	28 This too would be a crime for condemnation, for I should have denied God above.
29 Mi sono forse rallegrato della disgrazia del mio nemico, e ho esultato, perché lo colpì la sventura?	29 Had I rejoiced at the destruction of my enemy or exulted when evil fell upon him,
30 Non ho neppure permesso alla mia bocca di peccare, augurandogli la sua morte con un'imprecazione!	30 Even though I had not suffered my mouth to sin by uttering a curse against his life--
31 Non diceva forse la gente della mia tenda: "Chi non si è sfamato della sua mensa?".	31 Had not the men of my tent exclaimed, "Who has not been fed with his meat!"
32 Il forestiero non passava la notte all'aperto; io aprivo le porte al pellegrino.	32 Because no stranger lodged in the street, but I opened my door to wayfarers--
33 Ho forse occultato come un uomo i miei peccati, tenendo celato il mio delitto dentro di me	33 Had I, out of human weakness, hidden my sins and buried my guilt in my bosom
34 per timore dell'opinione delle folle, come se il disprezzo della famiglia mi spaventasse, sì da starmene zitto senza uscir di casa?	34 Because I feared the noisy multitude and the scorn of the tribes terrified me- then I should have remained silent, and not come out of doors!
35 Oh, avessi uno che mi ascoltasse! Ecco la mia firma! L'Onnipotente mi risponda! Il mio rivale scriva il suo rotolo:	35 Oh, that I had one to hear my case, and that my accuser would write out his indictment!
36 lo porterei sulle mie spalle e me lo cingerei come un diadema.	36 Surely, I should wear it on my shoulder or put it on me like a diadem;
37 Gli darei resoconto di tutta la mia condotta; mi presenterei a lui come un principe.	37 Of all my steps I should give him an account; like a prince I should present myself before him. This is my final plea; let the Almighty answer me! The words of Job are ended.
38 Se la mia terra ha gridato contro di me e i suoi solchi hanno pianto con essa,	38 If my land has cried out against me till its very furrows complained;
39 se ho mangiato i suoi frutti senza pagamento, facendo esalare l'ultimo respiro ai suoi coltivatori,	39 If I have eaten its produce without payment and grieved the hearts of its tenants;
40 le spine crescano invece del frumento e le ortiche al posto dell'orzo!". Fine delle parole di Giobbe.	40 Then let the thistles grow instead of wheat and noxious weeds instead of barley!
