BIBBIA CEI 1974	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Al tempo in cui governavano i giudici, ci fu nel paese una carestia e un uomo di Betlemme di Giuda emigrò nella campagna di Moab, con la moglie e i suoi due figli.	1 In the days when the Judges were governing, a famine occurred in the country and a certain man fromBethlehem of Judah went-he, his wife and his two sons -- to live in the Plains of Moab.
2 Quest'uomo si chiamava Elimèlech, sua moglie Noemi e i suoi due figli Maclon e Chilion; erano Efratei di Betlemme di Giuda. Giunti nella campagna di Moab, vi si stabilirono.	2 The man was called Elimelech, his wife Naomi and his two sons Mahlon and Chilion; they wereEphrathites from Bethlehem of Judah. Going to the Plains of Moab, they settled there.
3 Poi Elimèlech, marito di Noemi, morì ed essa rimase con i due figli.	3 Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she and her two sons were left.
4 Questi sposarono donne di Moab, delle quali una si chiamava Orpa e l'altra Rut. Abitavano in quel luogo da circa dieci anni,	4 These married Moabite women: one was called Orpah and the other Ruth. They lived there for aboutten years.

8 Noemi disse alle due nuore: "Andate, tornate ciascuna a casa di vostra madre; il Signore usi bontà con voi, come voi avete fatto con quelli che sono morti e con me!	8 Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, 'Go back, each of you to your mother's house.
9 Il Signore conceda a ciascuna di voi di trovare riposo in casa di un marito". Essa le baciò, ma quelle piansero ad alta voce	9 May Yahweh show you faithful love, as you have done to those who have died and to me. Yahweh grantthat you may each find happiness with a husband!' She then kissed them, but they began weeping loudly,
10 e le dissero: "No, noi verremo con te al tuo popolo".	10 and said, 'No, we shal go back with you to your people.'
11 Noemi rispose: "Tornate indietro, figlie mie! Perché verreste con me? Ho io ancora figli in seno, che possano diventare vostri mariti?	11 'Go home, daughters,' Naomi replied. 'Why come with me? Have I any more sons in my womb to makehusbands for you?
12 Tornate indietro, figlie mie, andate! Io sono troppo vecchia per avere un marito. Se dicessi: Ne ho speranza, e se anche avessi un marito questa notte e anche partorissi figli,	12 Go home, daughters, go, for I am now too old to marry again. Even if I said, "I stil have a hope: I shalltake a husband this very night and shal bear more sons,"
13 vorreste voi aspettare che diventino grandi e vi asterreste per questo dal maritarvi? No, figlie mie; io sono troppo infelice per potervi giovare, perché la mano del Signore è stesa contro di me".	13 would you be prepared to wait for them until they were grown up? Would you refuse to marry for theirsake? No, daughters, I am bitterly sorry for your sakes that the hand of Yahweh should have been raised againstme.'
14 Allora esse alzarono la voce e piansero di nuovo; Orpa baciò la suocera e partì, ma Rut non si staccò da lei.	14 They started weeping loudly al over again; Orpah then kissed her mother-in-law and went back to herpeople. But Ruth stayed with her.
15 Allora Noemi le disse: "Ecco, tua cognata è tornata al suo popolo e ai suoi dèi; torna indietro anche tu, come tua cognata".	15 Naomi then said, 'Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Go home, too;fol ow your sister-in-law.'
16 Ma Rut rispose: "Non insistere con me perché ti abbandoni e torni indietro senza di te; perché dove andrai tu andrò anch'io; dove ti fermerai mi fermerò; il tuo popolo sarà il mio popolo e il tuo Dio sarà il mio Dio;	16 But Ruth said, 'Do not press me to leave you and to stop going with you, for wherever you go, I shalgo, wherever you live, I shal live. Your people will be my people, and your God wil be my God.

18 Quando Noemi la vide così decisa ad accompagnarla, cessò di insistere.	18 Seeing that Ruth was determined to go with her, Naomi said no more.
19 Così fecero il viaggio insieme fino a Betlemme. Quando giunsero a Betlemme, tutta la città s'interessò di loro. Le donne dicevano: "È proprio Noemi!".	19 The two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem. Their arrival set the whole town astir, and thewomen said, 'Can this be Naomi?'
20 Essa rispondeva: "Non mi chiamate Noemi, chiamatemi Mara, perché l'Onnipotente mi ha tanto amareggiata!	20 To this she replied, 'Do not cal me Naomi, cal me Mara, for Shaddai has made my lot bitter.
21 Io ero partita piena e il Signore mi fa tornare vuota. Perché chiamarmi Noemi, quando il Signore si è dichiarato contro di me e l'Onnipotente mi ha resa infelice?".	21 I departed ful , and Yahweh has brought me home empty. Why, then, call me Naomi, since Yahwehhas pronounced against me and Shaddai has made me wretched?'
22 Così Noemi tornò con Rut, la Moabita, sua nuora, venuta dalle campagne di Moab. Esse arrivarono a Betlemme quando si cominciava a mietere l'orzo.	22 This was how Naomi came home with her daughter-in-law, Ruth the Moabitess, on returning from thePlains of Moab. They arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.
