BIBBIA CEI 1974	NEW JERUSALEM
1 e io, nell'anno primo di Dario, mi tenni presso di lui per dargli rinforzo e sostegno.	1 on whom I rely to give me support and to reinforce me.
2 Ed ora io ti manifesterò la verità. Ecco, vi saranno ancora tre re in Persia: poi il quarto acquisterà ricchezze superiori a tutti gli altri e dopo essersi reso potente con le ricchezze, muoverà con tutti i suoi contro il regno di Grecia.	2 And now I shal tell you the truth about these things. 'Three more kings are going to rise in Persia; afourth wil come and be richer than al the others, and when, thanks to his wealth, he has grown powerful, he wilmake war on al the kingdoms of Greece.
3 Sorgerà quindi un re potente e valoroso, il quale dominerà sopra un grande impero e farà ciò che vuole;	3 A mighty king wil rise and govern a vast empire and do whatever he pleases.
4 ma appena si sarà affermato, il suo regno verrà smembrato e diviso ai quattro venti del cielo, ma non fra i suoi discendenti né con la stessa forza che egli possedeva; il suo regno sarà infatti smembrato e dato ad altri anziché ai suoi discendenti.	4 But once he has come to power, his empire wil be broken up and parcelled out to the four winds ofheaven, though not to his descendants: it wil not be ruled as he ruled it, for his sovereignty will be uprooted andwil pass to others than his own descendants.
5 Il re del mezzogiorno diverrà potente e uno dei suoi capitani sarà più forte di lui e il suo impero sarà grande.	5 'The king of the south wil grow powerful, but one of his princes wil grow more powerful stil , with anempire greater than his own.
6 Dopo qualche anno faranno alleanza e la figlia del re del mezzogiorno verrà al re del settentrione per fare la pace, ma non potrà mantenere la forza del suo braccio e non resisterà né lei né la sua discendenza e sarà condannata a morte insieme con i suoi seguaci, il figlio e il marito.	6 Some years later, these will conclude a treaty and, to ratify the agreement, the daughter of the king ofthe south wil go to the king of the north. Her arm will not, however, retain its strength, nor his posterity endure:she wil be handed over, she, her escorts and her child, and he who has had authority over her. In due time
7 In quel tempo, da un germoglio delle sue radici sorgerà uno, al posto di costui, e verrà con un esercito e avanzerà contro le fortezze del re del settentrione, le assalirà e se ne impadronirà.	7 a sprig from her roots wil rise in his place, wil march on the defences, force the stronghold of the kingof the north, and succeed in overcoming them.
8 Condurrà in Egitto i loro dèi con le loro immagini e i loro preziosi oggetti d'oro e d'argento, come preda di guerra, poi per qualche anno si asterrà dal contendere con il re del settentrione.	8 He wil even carry off al their gods, their statues, their precious gold and silver vessels as booty toEgypt. For some years he wil leave the king of the north in peace,
9 Questi muoverà contro il re del mezzogiorno, ma se ne ritornerà nel suo paese.	9 but the latter will invade the kingdom of the king of the south, then retire to his own country.
10 Poi suo figlio si preparerà alla guerra, raccogliendo una moltitudine di grandi eserciti, con i quali avanzerà come una inondazione: attraverserà il paese per attaccare di nuovo battaglia e giungere sino alla sua fortezza.	10 His sons wil next be on the march, mustering a host of powerful forces; and he wil advance, deploy,break through and march on the southern stronghold once again.
11 Il re del mezzogiorno, inasprito, uscirà per combattere con il re del settentrione, che si muoverà con un grande esercito, ma questo cadrà in potere del re del mezzogiorno,	11 The king of the south wil fly into a rage and set out to give battle to the king of the north, who wilhave an immense army on his side, but this army wil be defeated by him.
12 il quale dopo aver disfatto quell'esercito si gonfierà d'orgoglio, ma pur avendo abbattuto decine di migliaia, non per questo sarà più forte.	12 The army wil be annihilated; he wil be triumphant; he wil overthrow tens of thousands; yet he wilhave no enduring strength.
13 Il re del settentrione di nuovo metterà insieme un grande esercito, più grande di quello di prima, e dopo qualche anno avanzerà con un grande esercito e con grande apparato.	13 The king of the north wil come back, having recruited an even larger army than before, and final y,after some years, he wil advance a second time with a great army and plentiful supplies.
14 In quel tempo molti si alzeranno contro il re del mezzogiorno e uomini violenti del tuo popolo insorgeranno per adempiere la visione, ma cadranno.	14 At that time, many wil take up arms against the king of the south, and the more violent of your ownpeople wil rebel in the hope of realising the vision; but they will fail.
15 Il re del settentrione verrà, costruirà terrapieni e occuperà una città ben fortificata. Le forze del mezzogiorno, con truppe scelte, non potranno resistere, mancherà loro la forza per opporre resistenza.	15 The king of the north wil then come and throw up siege-works to capture a strongly fortified city. The forces of the south wil not stand their ground; the pick of the people will not be strong enough to resist.
16 L'invasore farà ciò che vuole e nessuno gli si potrà opporre; si stabilirà in quella magnifica terra e la distruzione sarà nelle sue mani.	16 The invader wil do as he pleases, no one wil be able to resist him: he will take his stand in the Landof Splendour, destruction in his hands.
17 Quindi si proporrà di occupare tutto il regno del re del mezzogiorno, stipulerà un'alleanza con lui e gli darà sua figlia per rovinarlo, ma ciò non riuscirà e non raggiungerà il suo scopo.	17 He wil set about conquering his entire kingdom, but wil then make a treaty with him and, tooverthrow the kingdom, give him a woman's hand; but this wil not last or be to his advantage.
18 Poi volgerà le mire alle isole e ne prenderà molte, ma un comandante straniero farà cessare la sua arroganza, facendola ricadere sopra di lui.	18 He wil next turn to the coasts and islands and conquer many of them, but a magistrate wil put a stopto his outrages in such a way that he wil be unable to repay outrage for outrage.
19 Si volgerà poi verso le fortezze del proprio paese, ma inciamperà, cadrà, scomparirà.	19 'He wil then turn on the strongholds of his own country, but wil stumble, fall, and never be seenagain.
20 Sorgerà quindi al suo posto uno che manderà esattori nella terra perla del suo regno, ma in pochi giorni sarà stroncato, non nel furore di una rivolta né in battaglia.	20 In his place there wil rise a man who wil send an extortioner to despoil the royal splendour; in a fewdays he wil be shattered, though neither publicly nor in battle.
21 Gli succederà poi un uomo abbietto, privo di dignità regale: verrà di nascosto e occuperà il regno con la frode.	21 'In his place wil rise a wretch: royal honours wil not be given to him, but rather he wil insinuatehimself into them at his pleasure and wil gain possession of the kingdom by intrigue.
22 Le forze armate saranno annientate davanti a lui e sarà stroncato anche il capo dell'alleanza.	22 Armies will be utterly routed and crushed by him, the Prince of the covenant too.
23 Non appena sarà stata stipulata un'alleanza con lui, egli agirà con la frode, crescerà e si consoliderà con poca gente.	23 Through his alliances he wil act treacherously and, despite the smal ness of his fol owing, grow everstronger.
24 Entrerà di nascosto nei luoghi più fertili della provincia e farà cose che né i suoi padri né i padri dei suoi padri osarono fare; distribuirà alla sua gente preda, spoglie e ricchezze e ordirà progetti contro le fortezze, ma ciò fino ad un certo tempo.	24 At his pleasure, he wil invade rich provinces, acting as his fathers or his fathers' fathers never acted,distributing among them plunder, spoil and wealth, plotting his stratagems against the fortresses -- for a time.
25 La sua potenza e il suo ardire lo spingeranno contro il re del mezzogiorno con un grande esercito e il re del mezzogiorno verrà a battaglia con un grande e potente esercito, ma non potrà resistere, perché si ordiranno congiure contro di lui:	25 'He wil summon up his might and courage against the king of the south with a great army. The kingof the south wil march to war with a huge and powerful army but wil not succeed, since he will be outwitted bytrickery.
26 i suoi stessi commensali saranno causa della sua rovina; il suo esercito sarà travolto e molti cadranno uccisi.	26 Those who shared his food wil ruin him; his army wil be swept away, many wil fall in the slaughter.
27 I due re non penseranno che a farsi del male a vicenda e seduti alla stessa tavola parleranno con finzione, ma senza riuscire nei reciproci intenti, perché li attenderà la fine, al tempo stabilito.	27 'The two kings, seated at one table, hearts bent on evil, wil tell their lies; but they will not have theirway, for the appointed time is stil to come.
28 Egli ritornerà nel suo paese con grandi ricchezze e con in cuore l'avversione alla santa alleanza: agirà secondo i suoi piani e poi ritornerà nel suo paese.	28 Then the wretch wil return greatly enriched to his own country, his heart set against the holycovenant; he wil take action and then return to his own country.
29 Al tempo determinato verrà di nuovo contro il paese del mezzogiorno, ma quest'ultima impresa non riuscirà come la prima.	29 In due time, he will make his way southwards again, but this time the outcome wil not be as before.
30 Verranno contro lui navi dei Kittìm ed egli si sentirà scoraggiato e tornerà indietro. Si volgerà infuriato e agirà contro la santa alleanza, e nel suo ritorno se la intenderà con coloro che avranno abbandonato la santa alleanza.	30 The ships of the Kittim wil oppose him, and he wil be worsted. He wil retire and take furious actionagainst the holy covenant and, as before, wil favour those who forsake that holy covenant.
31 Forze da lui armate si muoveranno a profanare il santuario della cittadella, aboliranno il sacrificio quotidiano e vi metteranno l'abominio della desolazione.	31 'Forces of his wil come and profane the Citadel-Sanctuary; they will abolish the perpetual sacrificeand instal the appal ing abomination there.
32 Con lusinghe egli sedurrà coloro che avranno apostatato dall'alleanza, ma quanti riconoscono il proprio Dio si fortificheranno e agiranno.	32 Those who break the covenant he wil seduce by his blandishments, but the people who know theirGod will stand firm and take action.
33 I più saggi tra il popolo ammaestreranno molti, ma cadranno di spada, saranno dati alle fiamme, condotti in schiavitù e saccheggiati per molti giorni.	33 Those of the people who are wise leaders wil instruct many; for some days, however, they wilstumble from sword and flame, captivity and pil age.
34 Mentre così cadranno, riceveranno un po' di aiuto: molti però si uniranno a loro ma senza sincerità.	34 And thus stumbling, little help wil they receive, though many will be scheming in their support.
35 Alcuni saggi cadranno perché fra di loro ve ne siano di quelli purificati, lavati, resi candidi fino al tempo della fine, che dovrà venire al tempo stabilito.	35 Of the wise leaders some wil stumble, and so a number of them wil be purged, purified and madeclean -- until the time of the End, for the appointed time is stil to come.
36 Il re dunque farà ciò che vuole, s'innalzerà, si magnificherà sopra ogni dio e proferirà cose inaudite contro il Dio degli dèi e avrà successo finché non sarà colma l'ira; poiché ciò che è stato determinato si compirà.	36 'The king wil do as he pleases, growing more and more arrogant, considering himself greater thanal the gods; he will utter incredible blasphemies against the God of gods, and he wil thrive until the wrathreaches bursting point; for what has been decreed wil certainly be fulfil ed.
37 Egli non si curerà neppure delle divinità dei suoi padri né del dio amato dalle donne, né di altro dio, poiché egli si esalterà sopra tutti.	37 Heedless of his fathers' gods, heedless of the god whom women love, heedless of any godwhatever, he wil consider himself greatest of al .
38 Onorerà invece il dio delle fortezze: onorerà, con oro e argento, con gemme e con cose preziose, un dio che i suoi padri non hanno mai conosciuto.	38 Instead of them, he wil honour the god of fortresses, will honour a god unknown to his ancestorswith gold and silver, precious stones and valuable presents.
39 Nel nome di quel dio straniero attaccherà le fortezze e colmerà di onori coloro che lo riconosceranno: darà loro il potere su molti e distribuirà loro terre in ricompensa.	39 He wil use the people of an alien god to defend the fortresses; he will confer great honours on thosewhom he acknowledges, by giving them wide authority and by parcel ing the country out for rent.
40 Al tempo della fine il re del mezzogiorno si scontrerà con lui e il re del settentrione gli piomberà addosso, come turbine, con carri, con cavalieri e molte navi; entrerà nel suo territorio invadendolo.	40 'When the time comes for the End, the king of the south will try conclusions with him; but the king ofthe north wil come storming down on him with chariots, cavalry, and a large fleet. He wil invade countries,overrun them and drive on.
41 Entrerà anche in quella magnifica terra e molti paesi soccomberanno. Questi però scamperanno dalla sua mano: Edom, Moab e gran parte degli Ammoniti.	41 He wil invade the Land of Splendour, and many wil fal ; but Edom, Moab, and what remains of thesons of Ammon wil escape him.
42 Metterà così la mano su molti paesi; neppure l'Egitto scamperà.	42 'He wil reach out to attack countries: Egypt will not escape him.
43 S'impadronirà di tesori d'oro e d'argento e di tutte le cose preziose d'Egitto: i Libi e gli Etiopi saranno al suo seguito.	43 The gold and silver treasures and al the valuables of Egypt wil lie in his power. Libyans andCushites wil be at his feet:
44 Ma notizie dall'oriente e dal settentrione lo turberanno: egli partirà con grande ira per distruggere e disperdere molti.	44 but reports coming from the East and the north wil worry him, and in great fury he wil set out to bringruin and complete destruction to many.
45 Pianterà le tende del suo palazzo fra il mare e il bel monte santo: poi giungerà alla fine e nessuno verrà in suo aiuto.	45 He wil pitch the tents of his royal headquarters between the sea and the mountains of the HolySplendour. Yet he wil come to his end -- there wil be no help for him.'
