1 Con l'animo affranto dal dolore, sospirai e piansi. Poi presi a dire questa preghiera di lamento:	1 Then I being grieved did weep, and in my sorrow prayed, saying,
2 "Tu sei giusto, Signore, e giuste sono tutte le tue opere. Ogni tua via è misericordia e verità. Tu sei il giudice del mondo.	2 O Lord, thou art just, and all thy works and all thy ways are mercy and truth, and thou judgest truly and justly for ever.
3 Ora, Signore, ricordati di me e guardami. Non punirmi per i miei peccati e per gli errori miei e dei miei padri.	3 Remember me, and look on me, punish me not for my sins and ignorances, and the sins of mg fathers, who have sinned before thee:
4 Violando i tuoi comandi, abbiamo peccato davanti a te. Tu hai lasciato che ci spogliassero dei beni; ci hai abbandonati alla prigionia, alla morte e ad essere la favola, lo scherno, il disprezzo di tutte le genti, tra le quali ci hai dispersi.	4 For they obeyed not thy commandments: wherefore thou hast delivered us for a spoil, and unto captivity, and unto death, and for a proverb of reproach to all the nations among whom we are dispersed.
5 Ora, nel trattarmi secondo le colpe mie e dei miei padri, veri sono tutti i tuoi giudizi, perché non abbiamo osservato i tuoi decreti, camminando davanti a te nella verità.	5 And now thy judgments are many and true: deal with me according to my sins and my fathers': because we have not kept thy commandments, neither have walked in truth before thee.
6 Agisci pure ora come meglio ti piace; da' ordine che venga presa la mia vita, in modo che io sia tolto dalla terra e divenga terra, poiché per me è preferibile la morte alla vita. I rimproveri che mi tocca sentire destano in me grande dolore. Signore, comanda che sia tolto da questa prova; fa' che io parta verso l'eterno soggiorno; Signore, non distogliere da me il volto. Per me infatti è meglio morire che vedermi davanti questa grande angoscia e così non sentirmi più insultare!".	6 Now therefore deal with me as seemeth best unto thee, and command my spirit to be taken from me, that I may be dissolved, and become earth: for it is profitable for me to die rather than to live, because I have heard false reproaches, and have much sorrow: command therefore that I may now be delivered out of this distress, and go into the everlasting place: turn not thy face away from me.
7 Nello stesso giorno capitò a Sara figlia di Raguele, abitante di Ecbàtana, nella Media, di sentire insulti da parte di una serva di suo padre.	7 It came to pass the same day, that in Ecbatane a city of Media Sara the daughter of Raguel was also reproached by her father's maids;
8 Bisogna sapere che essa era stata data in moglie a sette uomini e che Asmodeo, il cattivo demonio, glieli aveva uccisi, prima che potessero unirsi con lei come si fa con le mogli. A lei appunto disse la serva: "Sei proprio tu che uccidi i tuoi mariti. Ecco, sei già stata data a sette mariti e neppure di uno hai potuto godere.	8 Because that she had been married to seven husbands, whom Asmodeus the evil spirit had killed, before they had lain with her. Dost thou not know, said they, that thou hast strangled thine husbands? thou hast had already seven husbands, neither wast thou named after any of them.
9 Perché vuoi battere noi, se i tuoi mariti sono morti? Vattene con loro e che da te non abbiamo mai a vedere né figlio né figlia".	9 Wherefore dost thou beat us for them? if they be dead, go thy ways after them, let us never see of thee either son or daughter.
10 In quel giorno dunque essa soffrì molto, pianse e salì nella stanza del padre con l'intenzione di impiccarsi. Ma tornando a riflettere pensava: "Che non abbiano ad insultare mio padre e non gli dicano: La sola figlia che avevi, a te assai cara, si è impiccata per le sue sventure. Così farei precipitare la vecchiaia di mio padre con angoscia negli inferi. Farò meglio a non impiccarmi e a supplicare il Signore che mi sia concesso di morire, in modo da non sentire più insulti nella mia vita".	10 Whe she heard these things, she was very sorrowful, so that she thought to have strangled herself; and she said, I am the only daughter of my father, and if I do this, it shall be a reproach unto him, and I shall bring his old age with sorrow unto the grave.
11 In quel momento stese le mani verso la finestra e pregò: "Benedetto sei tu, Dio misericordioso, e benedetto è il tuo nome nei secoli. Ti benedicano tutte le tue opere per sempre.	11 Then she prayed toward the window, and said, Blessed art thou, O Lord my God, and thine holy and glorious name is blessed and honourable for ever: let all thy works praise thee for ever.
12 Ora a te alzo la faccia e gli occhi.	12 And now, O Lord, I set I mine eyes and my face toward thee,
13 Di' che io sia tolta dalla terra, perché non abbia a sentire più insulti.	13 And say, Take me out of the earth, that I may hear no more the reproach.
14 Tu sai, Signore, che sono pura da ogni disonestà con uomo	14 Thou knowest, Lord, that I am pure from all sin with man,
15 e che non ho disonorato il mio nome, né quello di mio padre nella terra dell'esilio. Io sono l'unica figlia di mio padre. Egli non ha altri figli che possano ereditare, né un fratello vicino, né un parente, per il quale io possa serbarmi come sposa. Già sette mariti ho perduto: perché dovrei vivere ancora? Se tu non vuoi che io muoia, guardami con benevolenza: che io non senta più insulti".	15 And that I never polluted my name, nor the name of my father, in the land of my captivity: I am the only daughter of my father, neither hath he any child to be his heir, neither any near kinsman, nor any son of his alive, to whom I may keep myself for a wife: my seven husbands are already dead; and why should I live? but if it please not thee that I should die, command some regard to be had of me, and pity taken of me, that I hear no more reproach.
16 In quel medesimo momento la preghiera di tutti e due fu accolta davanti alla gloria di Dio	16 So the prayers of them both were heard before the majesty of the great God.
17 e fu mandato Raffaele a guarire i due: a togliere le macchie bianche dagli occhi di Tobi, perché con gli occhi vedesse la luce di Dio; a dare Sara, figlia di Raguele, in sposa a Tobia, figlio di Tobi, e a liberarla dal cattivo demonio Asmodeo. Di diritto, infatti, spettava a Tobia di sposarla, prima che a tutti gli altri pretendenti. Proprio allora Tobi rientrava dal cortile in casa e Sara, figlia di Raguele, stava scendendo dalla camera.	17 And Raphael was sent to heal them both, that is, to scale away the whiteness of Tobit's eyes, and to give Sara the daughter of Raguel for a wife to Tobias the son of Tobit; and to bind Asmodeus the evil spirit; because she belonged to Tobias by right of inheritance. The selfsame time came Tobit home, and entered into his house, and Sara the daughter of Raguel came down from her upper chamber.
