υπολαβων δε βαλδαδ ο σαυχιτης λεγει | 1 Bildad the Shuhite spoke out and said: |
μεχρι τινος λαλησεις ταυτα πνευμα πολυρημον του στοματος σου | 2 How long will you utter such things? The words from your mouth are like a mighty wind! |
μη ο κυριος αδικησει κρινων η ο τα παντα ποιησας ταραξει το δικαιον | 3 Does God pervert judgment, and does the Almighty distort justice? |
ει οι υιοι σου ημαρτον εναντιον αυτου απεστειλεν εν χειρι ανομιας αυτων | 4 If your children have sinned against him and he has left them in the grip of their guilt, |
συ δε ορθριζε προς κυριον παντοκρατορα δεομενος | 5 Still, if you yourself have recourse to God and make supplication to the Almighty, |
ει καθαρος ει και αληθινος δεησεως επακουσεται σου αποκαταστησει δε σοι διαιταν δικαιοσυνης | 6 Should you be blameless and upright, surely now he will awake for you and restore your rightful domain; |
εσται ουν τα μεν πρωτα σου ολιγα τα δε εσχατα σου αμυθητα | 7 Your former state will be of little moment, for in time to come you will flourish indeed. |
επερωτησον γαρ γενεαν πρωτην εξιχνιασον δε κατα γενος πατερων | 8 If you inquire of the former generations, and give heed to the experience of the fathers |
χθιζοι γαρ εσμεν και ουκ οιδαμεν σκια γαρ εστιν ημων επι της γης ο βιος | 9 (As we are but of yesterday and have no knowledge, because our days on earth are but a shadow), |
η ουχ ουτοι σε διδαξουσιν και αναγγελουσιν και εκ καρδιας εξαξουσιν ρηματα | 10 Will they not teach you and tell you and utter their words of understanding? |
μη θαλλει παπυρος ανευ υδατος η υψωθησεται βουτομον ανευ ποτου | 11 Can the papyrus grow up without mire? Can the reed grass flourish without water? |
ετι ον επι ριζης και ου μη θερισθη προ του πιειν πασα βοτανη ουχι ξηραινεται | 12 While it is yet green and uncut, it withers quicker than any grass. |
ουτως τοινυν εσται τα εσχατα παντων των επιλανθανομενων του κυριου ελπις γαρ ασεβους απολειται | 13 So is the end of everyone who forgets God, and so shall the hope of the godless man perish. |
αοικητος γαρ αυτου εσται ο οικος αραχνη δε αυτου αποβησεται η σκηνη | 14 His confidence is but a gossamer thread and his trust is a spider's web. |
εαν υπερειση την οικιαν αυτου ου μη στη επιλαβομενου δε αυτου ου μη υπομεινη | 15 He shall rely upon his family, but it shall not last; he shall cling to it, but it shall not endure. |
υγρος γαρ εστιν υπο ηλιου και εκ σαπριας αυτου ο ραδαμνος αυτου εξελευσεται | 16 He is full of sap before sunrise, and beyond his garden his shoots go forth; |
επι συναγωγην λιθων κοιμαται εν δε μεσω χαλικων ζησεται | 17 About a heap of stones are his roots entwined; among the rocks he takes hold. |
εαν καταπιη ο τοπος ψευσεται αυτον ουχ εορακας τοιαυτα | 18 Yet if one tears him from his place, it will disown him: "I have never seen you!" |
οτι καταστροφη ασεβους τοιαυτη εκ δε γης αλλον αναβλαστησει | 19 There he lies rotting beside the road, and out of the soil another sprouts. |
ο γαρ κυριος ου μη αποποιησηται τον ακακον παν δε δωρον ασεβους ου δεξεται | 20 Behold, God will not cast away the upright; neither will he take the hand of the wicked. |
αληθινων δε στομα εμπλησει γελωτος τα δε χειλη αυτων εξομολογησεως | 21 Once more will he fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with rejoicing. |
οι δε εχθροι αυτων ενδυσονται αισχυνην διαιτα δε ασεβους ουκ εσται | 22 They that hate you shall be clothed with shame, and the tent of the wicked shall be no more. |
