| 1 Et le Seigneur parla à Moïse et lui dit : | 1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, |
| 2 Dis aux enfants d'Israël : Qu'ils retournent et qu'ils campent devant Phihahiroth, qui est entre Magdalum et la mer, vis-à-vis de Béelséphon. Vous camperez vis-à-vis de ce lieu sur le bord de la mer. | 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, over against Baal-zephon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea. |
| 3 Car (le) Pharaon va dire des enfants d'Israël : Ils sont embarrassés en des lieux étroits, et renfermés par le désert. | 3 For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in. |
| 4 Je lui endurcirai le cœur, et il vous poursuivra ; et je serai glorifié dans (le) Pharaon et dans toute son armée, et les Egyptiens sauront que je suis le Seigneur. Les enfants d'Israël firent ce que le Seigneur leur avait ordonné. | 4 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honoured upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host; that the Egyptians may know that I am the LORD. And they did so. |
| 5 Et (Cependant) l'on vint dire au roi des Egyptiens que le peuple avait pris la fuite. Alors le cœur du (de) Pharaon et de ses serviteurs fut changé à l'égard du peuple et ils dirent : Qu'avons-nous fait en laissant partir les Israélites, afin qu'ils ne nous fussent plus assujettis ? | 5 And it was told the king of Egypt that the people fled: and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people, and they said, Why have we done this, that we have let Israel go from serving us? |
| 6 Il fit donc préparer son char, et il prit avec lui tout son peuple. | 6 And he made ready his chariot, and took his people with him: |
| 7 Il emmena aussi six cents chars d'élite et tout ce qui se trouva de chars (de guerre) dans l'Egypte, avec les chefs de toute l'armée. | 7 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them. |
| 8 Et le Seigneur endurcit le cœur du (de) Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, et il se mit à poursuivre les enfants d'Israël. Mais ils étaient sortis sous la conduite d'une main puissante. | 8 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued after the children of Israel: and the children of Israel went out with an high hand. |
| 9 Les Egyptiens poursuivant donc les Israélites qui étaient en avant, et marchant sur leurs traces, les atteignirent campés sur le bord de la mer. Toute la cavalerie et les chars du (de) Pharaon avec toute son armée étaient à Phihahiroth, vis-à-vis de Béelséphon. | 9 But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pi-hahiroth, before Baal-zephon. |
| 10 Lorsque (le) Pharaon était déjà proche, les enfants d'Israël, levant les yeux et ayant aperçu les Egyptiens derrière eux, furent saisis d'une grande crainte. Et ils crièrent au Seigneur. | 10 And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD. |
| 11 Et ils dirent à Moïse : Peut-être n'y avait-il point de sépulcres en Egypte, et c'est pour cela que tu nous as amenés ici, afin que nous mourions dans le désert. Quel dessein avais-tu quand tu nous as fait sortir d'Egypte ? | 11 And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? |
| 12 N'est-ce pas là ce que nous te disions en Egypte : Retire-toi de nous afin que nous servions les Egyptiens ? Car il valait beaucoup mieux que nous leur fussions leurs esclaves que de mourir dans ce désert. | 12 Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness. |
| 13 Moïse répondit au peuple : Ne craignez point, demeurez fermes et considérez les merveilles (grandes œuvres) que le Seigneur doit faire aujourd'hui ; car ces Egyptiens que vous voyez devant vous, vous ne les verrez plus jamais. | 13 And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever. |
| 14 Le Seigneur combattra pour vous, et vous demeurerez dans le silence. | 14 The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. |
| 15 Le Seigneur dit ensuite à Moïse : Pourquoi cries-tu vers moi ? Dis aux enfants d'Israël de se mettre en route. | 15 And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward: |
| 16 Et toi, élève ta verge et étends ta main sur la mer, et divise-la, afin que les enfants d'Israël marchent à sec au milieu de la mer. | 16 But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea. |
| 17 J'endurcirai le cœur des Egyptiens afin qu'ils vous poursuivent, et je serai glorifié dans (le) Pharaon et dans toute son armée, dans ses chars et dans sa cavalerie. | 17 And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. |
| 18 Et les Egyptiens sauront que je suis le Seigneur, lorsque j'aurai été ainsi glorifié dans (le) Pharaon, dans ses chars et dans sa cavalerie. | 18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. |
| 19 Alors l'ange de Dieu, qui marchait devant le camp des Israélites, alla derrière eux, et en même temps la colonne de nuée, quittant la tête du peuple, | 19 And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them: |
| 20 se mit aussi derrière, entre le camp des Egyptiens et le camp d'Israël, et la nuée était ténébreuse (d'une part), et (de l'autre) éclairait la nuit, en sorte que les deux armées ne purent s'approcher dans tout le temps de la nuit. | 20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night. |
| 21 Moïse ayant étendu sa main sur la mer, le Seigneur l'entr'ouvrit en faisant souffler un vent violent et brûlant pendant toute la nuit, et il la sécha, et l'eau fut divisée (en deux). | 21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. |
| 22 Et (Ainsi) les enfants d'Israël marchèrent à sec au milieu de la mer, ayant l'eau à droite et à gauche, qui leur servait comme d'un mur. | 22 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. |
| 23 Et les Egyptiens, marchant après eux, se mirent à les poursuivre au milieu de la mer, avec toute la cavalerie du (de) Pharaon, ses chars et ses chevaux. | 23 And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh's horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. |
| 24 Lorsque la veille du matin fut venue, le Seigneur, ayant regardé le camp des Egyptiens à travers la colonne de feu et de nuée, fit périr toute leur armée. | 24 And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians, |
| 25 Il renversa les roues des chars, et ils furent entraînés dans le fond de la mer. Alors les Egyptiens s'entre-dirent : Fuyons les Israélites, parce que le Seigneur combat pour eux contre nous. | 25 And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians. |
| 26 En même temps le Seigneur dit à Moïse : Etends ta main sur la mer, afin que les eaux retournent sur les Egyptiens, sur leurs chars et sur leur cavalerie. | 26 And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen. |
| 27 Moïse étendit donc la main sur la mer, et vers la pointe du jour elle retourna au même lieu où elle était auparavant. Ainsi lorsque les Egyptiens s'enfuyaient, les eaux vinrent au-devant d'eux, et le Seigneur les enveloppa au milieu des flots. | 27 And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. |
| 28 Les eaux revinrent et couvrirent les chars et la cavalerie de toute l'armée du (de) Pharaon, qui était entrée dans la mer en poursuivant Israël, et il n'en échappa (pas) un seul. | 28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them. |
| 29 Mais les enfants d'Israël passèrent à sec au milieu de la mer, ayant les eaux à droite et à gauche, qui leur tenaient lieu de mur. | 29 But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. |
| 30 En ce jour-là le Seigneur délivra Israël de la main des Egyptiens. | 30 Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore. |
| 31 Et ils virent les cadavres des Egyptiens sur le rivage de la mer, et les effets de la main puissante que le Seigneur avait étendue contre eux. Alors le peuple craignit le Seigneur ; il crut au Seigneur et à Moïse son serviteur. | 31 And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses. |
