κρεισσων ανηρ ελεγχων ανδρος σκληροτραχηλου εξαπινης γαρ φλεγομενου αυτου ουκ εστιν ιασις1 The words of king Lamuel. The vision by which his mother instructed him:
εγκωμιαζομενων δικαιων ευφρανθησονται λαοι αρχοντων δε ασεβων στενουσιν ανδρες2 “What, O my beloved? What, O beloved of my womb? What, O beloved of my vows?
ανδρος φιλουντος σοφιαν ευφραινεται πατηρ αυτου ος δε ποιμαινει πορνας απολει πλουτον3 Do not give your substance to women, or your riches to overthrow kings.
βασιλευς δικαιος ανιστησιν χωραν ανηρ δε παρανομος κατασκαπτει4 Not to kings, O Lamuel, not to kings give wine. For there are no secrets where drunkenness reigns.
ος παρασκευαζεται επι προσωπον του εαυτου φιλου δικτυον περιβαλλει αυτο τοις εαυτου ποσιν5 And perhaps they may drink and forget judgments, and alter the case of the sons of the poor.
αμαρτανοντι ανδρι μεγαλη παγις δικαιος δε εν χαρα και εν ευφροσυνη εσται6 Give strong drink to the grieving, and wine to those who are bitter in soul.
επισταται δικαιος κρινειν πενιχροις ο δε ασεβης ου συνησει γνωσιν και πτωχω ουχ υπαρχει νους επιγνωμων7 Let them drink, and forget their needs, and remember their sorrow no more.
ανδρες λοιμοι εξεκαυσαν πολιν σοφοι δε απεστρεψαν οργην8 Open your mouth for the mute and for all the cases of the sons who are passing through.
ανηρ σοφος κρινει εθνη ανηρ δε φαυλος οργιζομενος καταγελαται και ου καταπτησσει9 Open your mouth, declare what is just, and do justice to the indigent and the poor.
ανδρες αιματων μετοχοι μισησουσιν οσιον οι δε ευθεις εκζητησουσιν ψυχην αυτου10 Who shall find a strong woman? Far away, and from the furthest parts, is her price.
ολον τον θυμον αυτου εκφερει αφρων σοφος δε ταμιευεται κατα μερος11 The heart of her husband confides in her, and he will not be deprived of spoils.
βασιλεως υπακουοντος λογον αδικον παντες οι υπ' αυτον παρανομοι12 She will repay him with good, and not evil, all the days of her life.
δανιστου και χρεοφειλετου αλληλοις συνελθοντων επισκοπην ποιειται αμφοτερων ο κυριος13 She has sought wool and flax, and she has worked these by the counsel of her hands.
βασιλεως εν αληθεια κρινοντος πτωχους ο θρονος αυτου εις μαρτυριον κατασταθησεται14 She has become like a merchant’s ship, bringing her bread from far away.
πληγαι και ελεγχοι διδοασιν σοφιαν παις δε πλανωμενος αισχυνει γονεις αυτου15 And she has risen in the night, and given a prey to her household, and provisions to her maids.
πολλων οντων ασεβων πολλαι γινονται αμαρτιαι οι δε δικαιοι εκεινων πιπτοντων καταφοβοι γινονται16 She has considered a field and bought it. From the fruit of her own hands, she has planted a vineyard.
παιδευε υιον σου και αναπαυσει σε και δωσει κοσμον τη ψυχη σου17 She has wrapped her waist with fortitude, and she has strengthened her arm.
ου μη υπαρξη εξηγητης εθνει παρανομω ο δε φυλασσων τον νομον μακαριστος18 She has tasted and seen that her tasks are good; her lamp shall not be extinguished at night.
λογοις ου παιδευθησεται οικετης σκληρος εαν γαρ και νοηση αλλ' ουχ υπακουσεται19 She has put her hand to strong things, and her fingers have taken hold of the spindle.
εαν ιδης ανδρα ταχυν εν λογοις γινωσκε οτι ελπιδα εχει μαλλον αφρων αυτου20 She has opened her hand to the needy, and she has extended her hands to the poor.
ος κατασπαταλα εκ παιδος οικετης εσται εσχατον δε οδυνηθησεται εφ' εαυτω21 She shall not fear, in the cold of snow, for her household. For all those of her household have been clothed two-fold.
ανηρ θυμωδης ορυσσει νεικος ανηρ δε οργιλος εξωρυξεν αμαρτιας22 She has made embroidered clothing for herself. Fine linen and purple is her garment.
υβρις ανδρα ταπεινοι τους δε ταπεινοφρονας ερειδει δοξη κυριος23 Her husband is noble at the gates, when he sits among the senators of the land.
ος μεριζεται κλεπτη μισει την εαυτου ψυχην εαν δε ορκου προτεθεντος ακουσαντες μη αναγγειλωσιν24 She has made finely woven cloth and sold it, and she has delivered a waistband to the Canaanite.
φοβηθεντες και αισχυνθεντες ανθρωπους υπεσκελισθησαν ο δε πεποιθως επι κυριον ευφρανθησεται ασεβεια ανδρι διδωσιν σφαλμα ος δε πεποιθεν επι τω δεσποτη σωθησεται25 Strength and elegance are her clothing, and she will laugh in the final days.
πολλοι θεραπευουσιν προσωπα ηγουμενων παρα δε κυριου γινεται το δικαιον ανδρι26 She has opened her mouth to wisdom, and the law of clemency is on her tongue.
βδελυγμα δικαιοις ανηρ αδικος βδελυγμα δε ανομω κατευθυνουσα οδος27 She has considered the paths of her household, and she has not eaten her bread in idleness.
Her sons rose up and predicted great happiness; her husband rose up and praised her.
Many daughters have gathered together riches; you have surpassed them all.
Charm is false, and beauty is vain. The woman who fears the Lord, the same shall be praised.
Give to her from the fruit of her own hands. And let her works praise her at the gates.
