1 I PROVERBI di Salomone, figliuolo di Davide, Re d’Israele;	1 The parables of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel,
2 Per conoscere sapienza ed ammaestramento, Per intendere i detti di senno;	2 in order to know wisdom and discipline,
3 Per ricevere ammaestramento di buon senno, Di giustizia, di giudicio e di dirittura;	3 to understand words of prudence, and to accept the instruction of doctrine, justice and judgment, and equity,
4 Per dare avvedimento a’ semplici. E conoscenza, ed accorgimento a’ fanciulli.	4 so as to give discernment to little ones, knowledge and understanding to adolescents.
5 Il savio li udirà, e ne accrescerà la sua scienza; E l’uomo intendente ne acquisterà buoni consigli, e governo;	5 By listening, the wise shall become wiser and the intelligent shall possess governments.
6 Per comprender le sentenze ed i bei motti, Le parole de’ savi ed i lor detti oscuri	6 He shall turn his soul to a parable and to its interpretation, to the words of the wise and their enigmas.
7 IL timor del Signore è il capo della scienza; Ma gli stolti sprezzano la sapienza e l’ammaestramento.	7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The foolish despise wisdom as well as doctrine.
8 Ascolta, figliuol mio l’ammaestramento di tuo padre; E non lasciar l’insegnamento di tua madre;	8 Listen, my son, to the discipline of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother,
9 Perciocchè saranno un fregio grazioso al tuo capo, E collane al tuo collo	9 so that grace may be added to your head and a collar to your neck.
10 Figliuol mio, se i peccatori ti vogliono sedurre, Non acconsentir loro.	10 My son, if sinners should entice you, do not consent to them.
11 Se dicono: Vieni con noi, poniamo agguati al sangue, Insidiamo di nascosto l’innocente impunitamente;	11 If they should say: “Come with us. We will lie in wait for blood. We will lay traps against the innocent, without cause.
12 Tranghiottiamoli tutti vivi, come il sepolcro; E tutti intieri, a guisa di quelli che scendono nella fossa;	12 Let us swallow him alive, like Hell, and whole, like one descending into the pit.
13 Noi troveremo ogni sorte di preziosi beni, Noi empieremo le nostre case di spoglie;	13 We will discover every precious substance. We will fill our houses with spoils.
14 Tu trarrai la tua sorte con noi; Fra noi non vi sarà che una sola borsa;	14 Cast your lot with us. One purse will be for us all.”
15 Figliuol mio, non inviarti con loro; Rattieni il tuo piè dal lor sentiero.	15 My son, do not walk with them. Preclude your feet from their paths.
16 Perciocchè i lor piedi corrono al male, E si affrettano a spandere il sangue.	16 For their feet rush to evil, and they hurry to shed blood.
17 Perciocchè invano si tende la rete Dinanzi agli occhi d’ogni uccello;	17 But a net is thrown in vain before the eyes of those who have wings.
18 Ma essi pongono agguati al lor proprio sangue, Ed insidiano nascosamente l’anima loro.	18 Likewise, they lie in ambush against their own blood, and they undertake deceits against their own souls.
19 Tali sono i sentieri d’ogni uomo dato all’avarizia; Ella coglie l’anima di coloro in cui ella si trova	19 Thus, the ways of all those who are greedy seize the souls of those who possess.
20 LA somma Sapienza grida di fuori; Ella fa sentir la sua voce per le piazze;	20 Wisdom forewarns far and wide; she bestows her voice in the streets.
21 Ella grida in capo de’ luoghi delle turbe; Ella pronunzia i suoi ragionamenti nell’entrate delle porte, nella città,	21 She cries out at the head of crowds; at the entrance of the gates of the city, she offers her words, saying:
22 Dicendo: Infino a quando, o scempi, amerete la scempietà? Ed infino a quando gli schernitori prenderanno piacere in ischernire, Ed i pazzi avranno in odio la scienza?	22 “Little ones, how long will you choose to be childish, and how long will the foolish desire what is harmful to themselves, and how long will the imprudent hate knowledge?
23 Convertitevi alla mia riprensione; Ecco, io vi sgorgherò lo spirito mio; Io vi farò assapere le mie parole.	23 Be converted by my correction. Lo, I will offer my spirit to you, and I will reveal my words to you.
24 Perciocchè io ho gridato, e voi avete ricusato di ascoltare; Io ho distesa la mano, e niuno ha porto attenzione;	24 For I called, and you refused. I extended my hand, and there was no one who watched.
25 Ed avete lasciato ogni mio consiglio, E non avete gradita la mia correzione;	25 You have despised all my counsels, and you have neglected my rebukes.
26 Io altresì riderò della vostra calamità; Io mi farò beffe, quando il vostro spavento sarà venuto;	26 Similarly, I will ridicule you at your demise, and I will mock you, when that which you feared shall overcome you.
27 Quando il vostro spavento sarà venuto, a guisa di ruina, E la vostra calamità sarà giunta, a guisa di turbo; Quando angoscia e distretta vi sarà sopraggiunta.	27 When sudden calamity rushes upon you, and your demise advances like a tempest, when tribulation and anguish overcome you,
28 Allora essi grideranno a me, ma io non risponderò; Mi ricercheranno sollecitamente, ma non mi troveranno;	28 then they will call to me, and I will not heed, they will arise in the morning, and not find me.
29 Perciocchè hanno odiata la scienza, E non hanno eletto il timor del Signore;	29 For they held hatred for discipline, and they would not accept the fear of the Lord;
30 E non hanno gradito il mio consiglio, Ed hanno disdegnata ogni mia correzione.	30 they would not consent to my counsel, but they detracted from all of my corrections.
31 Perciò mangeranno del frutto delle lor vie, E saranno saziati de’ lor consigli.	31 Therefore, they shall eat the fruit of their way, and they shall have their fill of their own counsels.
32 Perciocchè lo sviamento degli scempi li uccide, E l’error degli stolti li fa perire.	32 The loathing of the little ones shall destroy them, and the prosperity of the foolish shall perish them.
33 Ma chi mi ascolta abiterà in sicurtà, E viverà in riposo, fuor di spavento di male	33 But whoever will listen to me shall rest without terror, and shall have full enjoyment of abundance, without fear of evils.”
