EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Más vale el buen nombre que un buen perfume y el día de la muerte, más que el del nacimiento.	1 Better a good name than costly oil, the day of death than the day of birth.
2 Más vale ir a una casa donde hay duelo que asistir a un banquete, porque ese es el fin de todo hombre y allí reflexionan los vivientes.	2 Better go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting; for to this end everyone comes, let theliving take this to heart.
3 Más vale la tristeza que la risa, porque el rostro serio ayuda a pensar.	3 Better sadness than laughter: a joyful heart may be concealed behind sad looks.
4 El corazón del sabio está en la casa de duelo y el del necio, en el lugar de diversión.	4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, the heart of fools in the house of gaiety.
5 Más vale escuchar el reproche de un sabio que oír el canto de los necios.	5 Better attend to the reprimand of the wise than listen to a song sung by a fool.
6 porque como el crepitar de las espinas bajo la olla, así es la risa de los necios. Y también esto es vanidad.	6 For like the crackling of thorns under the cauldron is the laughter of fools: and that too is futile.
7 La opresión puede enloquecer a un sabio, y los regalos pierden el corazón.	7 But being oppressed drives a sage mad, and a present corrupts the heart.
8 Más vale el fin de una cosa que su comienzo y más vale ser paciente que pretender demasiado.	8 Better the end of a matter than its beginning, better patience than ambition.
9 No te dejes llevar por el enojo, porque el enojo se alberga en el pecho de los necios.	9 Do not be too easily exasperated, for exasperation dwel s in the heart of fools.
10 No digas: «¿A qué se debe que el tiempo pasado fue mejor que el presente?». Porque no es la sabiduría la que te lleva a hacer esa pregunta.	10 Do not ask why the past was better than the present, for this is not a question prompted by wisdom.
11 La sabiduría vale tanto como una herencia y es provechosa para los que ven la luz del sol.	11 Wisdom is as good as a legacy, profitable to those who enjoy the light of the sun.
12 Porque estar a la sombra de la sabiduría es como estar a la sombra del dinero, y la ventaja de la ciencia es que la sabiduría hace vivir al que la posee.	12 For as money protects, so does wisdom, and the advantage of knowledge is this: that wisdom bestowslife on those who possess her.
13 Observa la obra de Dios: ¿quién puede enderezar lo que él torció?	13 Consider God's creation: who, for instance, can straighten what God has bent?
14 Disfruta de los días felices y en los días adversos, reflexiona: Dios hizo que se sucedan unos a otros, de manera que el hombre no descubra nada de lo que vendrá después de él.	14 When things are going wel , enjoy yourself, and when they are going badly, consider this: God hasdesigned the one no less than the other so that we should take nothing for granted.
15 Yo he visto de todo en mis días vanos: hay justos que parecen a pesar de su justicia y malvados que sobreviven a pesar de su maldad.	15 In my futile life, I have seen everything: the upright person perishing in uprightness and the wickedperson surviving in wickedness.
16 No seas excesivamente justo ni quieras ser demasiado sabio: ¿para qué te vas a arruinar?	16 Do not be upright to excess and do not make yourself unduly wise: why should you destroy yourself?
17 No seas demasiado malo ni te comportes como un necio: ¿para qué vas a morir antes de tiempo?	17 Do not be wicked to excess, and do not be a fool: why die before your time?
18 Lo mejor es procurar esto sin dejar de lado aquello: el que teme a Dios sabe unir las dos cosas.	18 It is wise to hold on to one and not let go of the other, since the godfearing wil find both.
19 La sabiduría hace más fuerte al sabio que diez magistrados de una ciudad.	19 Wisdom makes the wise stronger than a dozen governors in a city.
20 No hay un hombre justo sobre la tierra que haga el bien sin pecar jamás.	20 No one on earth is sufficiently upright to do good without ever sinning.
21 Tampoco prestes atención a todo lo que se dice. no sea que escuches a tu servidor que te maldice.	21 Again, do not listen to all that people say, then you wil not hear your servant abusing you.
22 Porque, además, tú sabes muy bien cuántas veces has maldecido a otros.	22 For often, as you very wel know, you have abused others.
23 Yo experimenté todo esto con sabiduría, pensando: «Voy a ser sabio». Pero ella está fuera de mi alcance:	23 Thanks to wisdom, I have found all this to be true; I resolved to be wise, but this was beyond myreach!
24 lo que existe es lejano y profundo, más profundo de lo que se puede vislumbrar.	24 The past is out of reach, buried deep -- who can discover it?
25 Yo me dediqué con el mayor empeño a conocer, a explorar, y a buscar la sabiduría y la razón de las cosas y reconocí que la maldad es una insensatez, y la necedad, una locura.	25 But I have reached the point where, having learnt, explored and investigated wisdom and reflection, Irecognise evil as being a form of madness, and fol y as something stupid.
26 Y yo encuentro más amarga que la muerte a la mujer, cuando ella misma es una trampa, su corazón, una red, y sus brazos, ataduras. Con el favor de Dios, uno puede librarse, pero el pecador se deja atrapar.	26 And I find woman more bitter than Death, she is a snare, her heart is a net, and her arms are chains.The man who is pleasing to God eludes her, but the sinner is captured by her.
27 Mira: esto es lo que descubrí, dice Cohélet. tratando de razonar caso por caso.	27 This is what I think, says Qoheleth, having examined one thing after another to draw some conclusion,
28 Pero esto es lo que todavía busco, sin haberlo encontrado: He logrado encontrar a un hombre entre mil, pero entre todas las mujeres no hallé ni una sola.	28 which I am still looking for, although unsuccessful y: one man in a thousand, I may find, but a womanbetter than other women-never.
29 En resumen, he descubierto lo siguiente: Dios hizo recto al hombre, pero ellos se buscan muchas complicaciones.	29 This alone is my conclusion: God has created man straightforward, and human artifices are humaninventions.
