Génesis 38

BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Por aquel tiempo bajó Judá de donde sus hermanos para dirigirse a cierto individuo de Adullam llamado Jirá.	1 It happened at about that time that Judah left his brothers, to go down and settle with a certainAdul amite called Hirah.
2 Allí conoció Judá a la hija de un cananeo llamado Súa y tomándola por esposa se llegó a ella;	2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite cal ed Shua. He made her his wife and slept with her.
3 ella concibió y dio a luz un hijo, al que llamó Er.	3 She conceived and gave birth to a son whom she named Er.
4 Volvió a concebir y dio a luz otro hijo, al que llamó Onán.	4 She conceived again and gave birth to a son whom she named Onan.
5 Nuevamente dio a luz otro hijo, al que llamó Selá. Ella se encontraba en Akzib al darle a luz.	5 Yet again she gave birth to a son whom she named Shelah. She was at Chezib when she gave birthto him.
6 Judá tomó para su primogénito Er a una mujer llamada Tamar.	6 Judah took a wife for his first-born Er, and her name was Tamar.
7 Er, el primogénito de Judá, fue malo a los ojos de Yahveh, Yahveh le hizo morir.	7 But Er, Judah's first-born, offended Yahweh, and Yahweh kil ed him.
8 Entonces Judá dijo a Onán: «Cásate con la mujer de tu hermano y cumple como cuñado con ella, procurando descendencia a tu hermano.»	8 Then Judah said to Onan, 'Take your brother's wife, and do your duty as her brother-in-law, tomaintain your brother's line.'
9 Onán sabía que aquella descendencia no sería suya, y así, si bien tuvo relaciones con su cuñada, derramaba a tierra, evitando el dar descendencia a su hermano.	9 But Onan, knowing that the line would not count as his, spilt his seed on the ground every time heslept with his brother's wife, to avoid providing offspring for his brother.
10 Pareció mal a Yahveh lo que hacía y le hizo morir también a él.	10 What he did was offensive to Yahweh, who killed him too.
11 Entonces dijo Judá a su nuera Tamar: «Quédate como viuda en casa de tu padre hasta que crezca mi hijo Selá.» Pues se decía: «Por si acaso muere también él, lo mismo que sus hermanos.» Tamar se fue y quedó en casa de su padre.	11 Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, 'Go home as a widow to your father, until my sonShelah grows up,' for he was thinking, 'He must not die like his brothers.' So Tamar went home to her father.
12 Pasaron muchos días, y murió la hija de Súa, la mujer de Judá. Cuando Judá se hubo consolado, subió a Timná para el trasquileo de su rebaño, junto con Jirá su compañero adulamita.	12 A long time passed, and then Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died. After Judah had beencomforted he went up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.
13 Se lo notificaron a Tamar: «Oye, tu suegro sube a Timná para el trasquileo de su rebaño.»	13 When Tamar was told, 'Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah for the shearing of his sheep,'

19 Entonces se marchó ella y, quitándose el velo, se vistió sus ropas de viuda.	19 Then she got up and left him and, taking off her veil, resumed her widow's weeds.
20 Judá, por su parte, envió el cabrito por mediación de su compañero el adulamita, para rescatar la prenda de manos de la mujer, pero éste no la encontró.	20 Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adul amite, to recover the pledge from the woman. But he did notfind her.
21 Preguntó a los del lugar: «¿Dónde está la ramera aquella que había en Enáyim, a la vera del camino?» - «Ahí no ha habido ninguna ramera» -	21 He enquired from the men of the place, 'Where is the prostitute who was by the roadside at Enaim?''There has been no prostitute there,' they answered.
22 Entonces él se volvió donde Judá y dijo: «No la he encontrado; y los mismos lugareños me han dicho que allí no ha habido ninguna ramera.»	22 So returning to Judah he said, 'I did not find her. What is more, the men of the place told me therehad been no prostitute there.'
23 «Pues que se quede con ello - dijo Judá -; que nadie se burle de nosotros. Ya ves cómo he enviado ese cabrito, y tú no la has encontrado.»	23 'Let her keep the things,' Judah said, 'or we shal become a laughing-stock. At least I sent her thiskid, even though you did not find her.'
24 Ahora bien, como a los tres meses aproximadamente, Judá recibió este aviso: «Tu nuera Tamar ha fornicado, y lo que es más, ha quedado encinta a consecuencia de ello.» Dijo Judá: «Sacadla y que sea quemada.»	24 About three months later, Judah was told, 'Your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore,she is pregnant, as a result of her misconduct.' 'Bring her out,' Judah ordered, 'and let her be burnt alive!'
25 Pero cuando ya la sacaban, envió ella un recado a su suegro: «Del hombre a quien esto pertenece estoy encinta», y añadía: «Examina, por favor, de quién es este sello, este cordón y este bastón.»	25 But as she was being led off, she sent word to her father-in-law, 'It was the owner of these whomade me pregnant. Please verify', she said, 'whose seal and cord and staff these are.'
26 Judá lo reconoció y dijo: «Ella tiene más razón que yo, porque la verdad es que no la he dado por mujer a mi hijo Selá.» Y nunca más volvió a tener trato con ella.	26 Judah recognised them and said, 'She was right and I was wrong, since I did not give her to my sonShelah.' He had no further intercourse with her.
27 Al tiempo del parto resultó que tenía dos mellizos en el vientre.	27 When the time for her confinement came, there were twins in her womb!
28 Y ocurrió que, durante el parto, uno de ellos sacó la mano, y la partera le agarró y le ató una cinta escarlata a la mano, diciendo: «Este ha salido primero.»	28 During the delivery, one of them put out a hand, and the midwife caught it and tied a scarlet thread toit, indicating that this was the first to arrive.
29 Pero entonces retiró él la mano, y fue su hermano el que salió. Ella dijo: «¡Cómo te has abierto brecha!» Y le llamó Peres.	29 Whereupon, he drew back his hand, and out came his brother. Then she said, 'What a breach youhave opened for yourself!' So he was named Perez.
30 Detrás salió su hermano, que llevaba en la mano la cinta escarlata, y le llamó Zéraj.	30 Then his brother came out with the scarlet thread on his hand, so he was named Zerah.
