Unto the end. For those who will be changed, with the inscription of a title, of David himself, for instruction:1 For the director. Do not destroy. A miktam of David, when Saul sent people to watch his house and kill him.
when he set fire to Mesopotamia of Syria and Sobal, and Joab turned back and struck Idumea, in the valley of the salt pits, twelve thousand men.2 Rescue me from my enemies, my God; lift me out of reach of my foes.
O God, you have rejected us, and you have ruined us. You became angry, and yet you have been merciful to us.3 Deliver me from evildoers; from the bloodthirsty save me.
You have moved the earth, and you have disturbed it. Heal its breaches, for it has been moved.4 They have set an ambush for my life; the powerful conspire against me. For no offense or misdeed of mine, LORD,
You have revealed to your people difficulties. You have made us drink the wine of remorse.5 for no fault they hurry to take up arms. Come near and see my plight!
You have given a warning sign to those who fear you, so that they may flee from before the face of the bow, so that your beloved may be delivered.6 You, LORD of hosts, are the God of Israel! Awake! Punish all the nations. Have no mercy on these worthless traitors. Selah
Save me with your right hand, and hear me.7 Each evening they return, growling like dogs, prowling the city.
God has spoken in his holy place: I will rejoice, and I will divide Shechem, and I will measure the steep valley of the tabernacles.8 Their mouths pour out insult; sharp words are on their lips. They say: "Who is there to hear?"
Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine. And Ephraim is the strength of my head. Judah is my king.9 You, LORD, laugh at them; you deride all the nations.
Moab is the cooking pot of my hope. Into Idumea, I will extend my shoe. To me, the foreigners have been made subject.10 My strength, for you I watch; you, God, are my fortress,
Who will lead me into the fortified city? Who will lead me all the way to Idumea?11 my loving God.
Will not you, O God, who has rejected us? And will not you, O God, go out with our armies?12 May God go before me, and show me my fallen foes. Slay them, God, lest they deceive my people. Shake them by your power; Lord, our shield, bring them down.
Grant us help from tribulation. For salvation from man is empty.13 For the sinful words of their mouths and lips let them be caught in their pride. For the lies they have told under oath
In God, we will act virtuously. And those who trouble us, he will lead to nothing.14 destroy them in anger, destroy till they are no more. Then people will know God rules over Jacob, yes, even to the ends of the earth. Selah
Each evening they return, growling like dogs, prowling the city.
They roam about as scavengers; if they are not filled, they howl.
But I shall sing of your strength, extol your love at dawn, For you are my fortress, my refuge in time of trouble.
My strength, your praise I will sing; you, God, are my fortress, my loving God.
