NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 From there David went up and installed himself in the strongholds of En-Gedi.	1 Davide salì da lì per abitare tra i rifugi di Engaddi.
2 Once Saul was back from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, 'David is now in the desert of En-Gedi.'	2 Quando Saul ritornò dall'inseguimento dei Filistei gli riferirono: "Ecco, Davide sta nel deserto di Engaddi".
3 Saul thereupon took three thousand men selected from al Israel and went in search of David and hismen east of the Rocks of the Mountain Goats.	3 Saul prese tremila uomini scelti da tutto Israele, e andò alla ricerca di Davide e dei suoi uomini sugli strapiombi delle Rocce degli Stambecchi.
4 He came to the sheepfolds along the route, where there was a cave, and went in to cover his feet.Now David and his men were sitting in the recesses of the cave;	4 Arrivato a certi recinti di pecore a lato della strada, dove era una caverna, Saul vi entrò per coprire i suoi piedi; Davide e i suoi uomini stavano nelle profondità della caverna.
5 David's men said to him, 'Today is the day of which Yahweh said to you, "I shall deliver your enemyinto your power; do what you like with him." ' David got up and, unobserved, cut off the border of Saul's cloak.	5 Gli uomini di Davide gli dissero: "Ecco il giorno in cui il Signore ti dice: "Ecco, io pongo il tuo nemico nelle tue mani e tu gli farai quello che pare bene ai tuoi occhi". Davide si alzò e tagliò furtivamente il lembo del manto di Saul.
6 Afterwards David reproached himself for having cut off the border of Saul's cloak.	6 Ma dopo ciò a Davide batté il cuore, perché aveva tagliato il lembo del manto di Saul.
7 He said to his men, 'Yahweh preserve me from doing such a thing to my lord as to raise my handagainst him, since he is Yahweh's anointed.'	7 Disse ai suoi uomini: "Mi guardi il Signore dal fare questa cosa al mio signore, al consacrato dal Signore, stendendo la mia mano su di lui. Egli infatti è il consacrato del Signore".
8 By these words David restrained his men and would not let them attack Saul.	8 Davide dissuase i suoi uomini con severe parole e non permise loro di insorgere contro Saul. Così Saul partì dalla caverna e se ne andò per la sua via.
9 Saul then left the cave and went on his way. After this, David too left the cave and cal ed after Saul,'My lord king!' Saul looked behind him and David, bowing to the ground, prostrated himself.	9 Poi si levò anche Davide, uscì dalla caverna e gridò a Saul: "O re, mio signore!". Saul si girò indietro, Davide si gettò a terra facendo prostrazioni.
10 David then said to Saul, 'Why do you listen to people who say, "David intends your ruin"?	10 Poi Davide disse a Saul: "Perché dài ascolto alle parole di chi dice: "Ecco, Davide cerca il tuo male"?
11 This very day you have seen for yourself how Yahweh put you in my power in the cave and how,refusing to kil you, I spared you saying, "I wil not raise my hand against my lord, since he is Yahweh'sanointed."	11 Ecco che quest'oggi i tuoi occhi costatano che il Signore ti aveva messo, oggi stesso, nella mia mano nella caverna e uno mi suggeriva di ucciderti, ma ho avuto pietà di te e ho detto: "Non stenderò la mia mano sul mio signore, perché egli è consacrato dal Signore!".
12 Look, father, look at the border of your cloak in my hand. Since, although I cut the border off yourcloak, I did not kil you, surely you realise that I intend neither mischief nor crime. I have not wronged you, andyet you hunt me down to take my life.	12 O padre mio, guarda il lembo del tuo manto nella mia mano! Poiché, quando io ho tagliato il lembo del tuo manto, non ti ho ucciso, sappi e osserva che non vi è nelle mie azioni né male né delitto, e non ho peccato contro di te; ma tu tendi insidie alla mia vita per togliermela.
13 May Yahweh be judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me on you; but I shall neverlay a hand on you!	13 Che il Signore faccia da giudice tra me e te, e il Signore mi vendichi di te, ma la mia mano non sarà contro di te.
14 (As the old proverb says: Wickedness comes out of wicked people, but I shal never lay a hand onyou!)	14 Come dice un antico proverbio: Dai malvagi esce malvagità! Ma la mia mano non sarà contro di te!
15 On whose trail is the king of Israel campaigning? Whom are you pursuing? On the trail of a deaddog, of a flea!	15 Dietro a chi è uscito il re d'Israele? Dietro a chi tu stai correndo? Dietro un cane morto, dietro una semplice pulce!
16 May Yahweh be the judge and decide between me and you; may he examine and defend my causeand give judgement for me by rescuing me from your clutches!'	16 Il Signore sarà l'arbitro e farà da giudice tra me e te; che egli esamini e difenda la mia causa e mi renda giustizia dalla tua mano".
17 When David had finished saying this to Saul, Saul said, 'Is that your voice, my son David?' And Saulbegan to weep aloud.	17 Quando Davide finì di rivolgere quelle parole a Saul, egli rispose: "Questa è la tua voce, figlio mio Davide?". E Saul, alzando grida, pianse.
18 'You are upright and I am not,' he said to David, 'since you have behaved wel to me, whereas I havebehaved badly to you.	18 Poi disse a Davide: "Tu sei più retto di me, perché tu mi hai reso del bene, mentre io ti ho reso del male.
19 And today you have shown how well you have behaved to me, since Yahweh had put me in yourpower but you did not kil me.	19 E tu oggi hai manifestato il bene che hai fatto verso di me, in quanto il Signore mi aveva consegnato nella tua mano, ma tu non mi hai ucciso.
20 When a man comes on his enemy, does he let him go unmolested? May Yahweh reward you for thegood you have done me today!	20 Quando un uomo incontra il suo nemico, lo lascia andare tranquillamente per la sua via? Il Signore ti renderà del bene per quello che mi hai fatto quest'oggi.
21 Now I know that you wil indeed reign and that the sovereignty in Israel wil pass into your hands.	21 E ora, ecco, io so che tu certamente sarai re e il potere regale su Israele sarà stabile nella tua mano;
22 Now swear to me by Yahweh that you wil not suppress my descendants once I am gone, or blot myname out of my family.'	22 or dunque, giurami per il Signore che non sopprimerai la mia discendenza dopo di me e che non farai scomparire il mio nome dal casato di mio padre".
23 This David swore to Saul, and Saul went home while David and his men went back to the stronghold.	23 Davide lo giurò a Saul e Saul se ne ritornò alla sua casa, mentre Davide e i suoi uomini salirono alla fortezza.
