1 Samuel 24

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 From there David went up and installed himself in the strongholds of En-Gedi.	1 David subió de allí y se estableció en los sitios bien protegidos de Engadí.
2 Once Saul was back from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, 'David is now in the desert of En-Gedi.'	2 Cuando Saúl volvió a perseguir a los filisteos, le dieron esta noticia: «David está en el desierto de Engadí».
3 Saul thereupon took three thousand men selected from al Israel and went in search of David and hismen east of the Rocks of the Mountain Goats.	3 Entonces reunió a tres mil hombres seleccionados entre todo Israel y partió en busca de David y sus hombres, hacia las Peñas de las Cabras salvajes.
4 He came to the sheepfolds along the route, where there was a cave, and went in to cover his feet.Now David and his men were sitting in the recesses of the cave;	4 Al llegar a los corrales de ovejas que están junto al camino, donde había una cueva, Saúl entró a hacer sus necesidades. En el fondo de la cueva, estaban sentados David y sus hombres.
5 David's men said to him, 'Today is the day of which Yahweh said to you, "I shall deliver your enemyinto your power; do what you like with him." ' David got up and, unobserved, cut off the border of Saul's cloak.	5 Ellos le dijeron: «Este es el día en que el Señor te dice: "Yo pongo a tu enemigo en tus manos; tú lo tratarás como mejor te parezca"». Entonces David se levantó y cortó sigilosamente el borde del manto de Saúl.
6 Afterwards David reproached himself for having cut off the border of Saul's cloak.	6 Pero después le remordió la conciencia, por haber cortado el borde del manto de Saúl,
7 He said to his men, 'Yahweh preserve me from doing such a thing to my lord as to raise my handagainst him, since he is Yahweh's anointed.'	7 y dijo a sus hombres: «¡Dios me libre de hacer semejante cosa a mi señor, el ungido del Señor! ¡No extenderé mi mano contra él, porque es el ungido del Señor!».
8 By these words David restrained his men and would not let them attack Saul.	8 Con estas palabras, David retuvo a sus hombres y no dejó que se abalanzaran sobre Saúl. Así Saúl abandonó la cueva y siguió su camino.
9 Saul then left the cave and went on his way. After this, David too left the cave and cal ed after Saul,'My lord king!' Saul looked behind him and David, bowing to the ground, prostrated himself.	9 Después de esto, David se levantó, salió de la cueva y gritó detrás de Saúl: «¡Mi señor, el rey!». Saúl miró hacia atrDavid, iclinándose con el rostro en tierra, se postró
10 David then said to Saul, 'Why do you listen to people who say, "David intends your ruin"?	10 y le dijo: «¿Por qué haces caso a los rumores de la gente, cuando dicen que David busca tu ruina?
11 This very day you have seen for yourself how Yahweh put you in my power in the cave and how,refusing to kil you, I spared you saying, "I wil not raise my hand against my lord, since he is Yahweh'sanointed."	11 Hoy has visto con tus propios ojos que el Señor te puso en mis manos dentro de la cueva. Aquí se habló de matarte, pero yo tuve compasión de ti y dije: "No extenderé mi mano contra mi señor, porque es el ungido del Señor".
12 Look, father, look at the border of your cloak in my hand. Since, although I cut the border off yourcloak, I did not kil you, surely you realise that I intend neither mischief nor crime. I have not wronged you, andyet you hunt me down to take my life.	12 ¡Mira, padre mío, sí, mira en mi mano el borde de tu manto! Si yo corté el borde de tu manto y no te maté, tienes que comprender que no hay en mí ni perfidia ni rebeldía, y que no he pecado contra ti. ¡Eres tú el que me acechas para quitarme la vida!
13 May Yahweh be judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me on you; but I shall neverlay a hand on you!	13 Que el Señor juzgue entre tú y yo, y que él me vengue de ti. Pero mi mano no se alzará contra ti.
14 (As the old proverb says: Wickedness comes out of wicked people, but I shal never lay a hand onyou!)	14 "La maldad engendra maldad", dice el viejo refrán. Pero yo no alzaré mi mano contra ti.
15 On whose trail is the king of Israel campaigning? Whom are you pursuing? On the trail of a deaddog, of a flea!	15 ¿Detrás de quién ha salido el rey de Israel? ¿A quién estás persiguiendo? ¡A un perro muerto! ¡A una pulga!
16 May Yahweh be the judge and decide between me and you; may he examine and defend my causeand give judgement for me by rescuing me from your clutches!'	16 ¡Que el Señor sea el árbitro y juzgue entre tú y yo; que él examine y defienda mi causa, y me haga justicia, librándome de tu mano!».
17 When David had finished saying this to Saul, Saul said, 'Is that your voice, my son David?' And Saulbegan to weep aloud.	17 Cuando David terminó de dirigir estas palabras a Saúl, este exclamó: «¿No es esa tu voz, hijo mío, David?», y prorrumpió en sollozos.
18 'You are upright and I am not,' he said to David, 'since you have behaved wel to me, whereas I havebehaved badly to you.	18 Luego dijo a David: «La justicia está de tu parte, no de la mía. Porque tú me has tratado bien y yo te he tratado mal.
19 And today you have shown how well you have behaved to me, since Yahweh had put me in yourpower but you did not kil me.	19 Hoy sí que has demostrado tu bondad para conmigo, porque el Señor me puso en tus manos y tú no me mataste.
20 When a man comes on his enemy, does he let him go unmolested? May Yahweh reward you for thegood you have done me today!	20 Cuando alguien encuentra a su enemigo, ¿lo deja seguir su camino tranquilamente? ¡Que el Señor te recompense por el bien que me has hecho hoy!
21 Now I know that you wil indeed reign and that the sovereignty in Israel wil pass into your hands.	21 Ahora sé muy bien que tú serás rey y que la realeza sobre Israel se mantendrá firme en tus manos.
22 Now swear to me by Yahweh that you wil not suppress my descendants once I am gone, or blot myname out of my family.'	22 Júrame, entonces, que el Señor, que no extirparás mi descendencia después de mí, ni borrarás el nombre de mi familia».
23 This David swore to Saul, and Saul went home while David and his men went back to the stronghold.	23 Así se lo juró David a Saúl, y este se fue a su casa, mientras David y sus hombres subían a su refugio.
