1 From there David went up and installed himself in the strongholds of En-Gedi.	1 - Davide allora salì verso i luoghi più sicuri di Engaddi e vi si fermò.
2 Once Saul was back from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, 'David is now in the desert of En-Gedi.'	2 Allorchè Saul fu di ritorno dall'inseguimento dei Filistei, gli vennero ad annunziare: «Ecco, Davide si trova nel deserto di Engaddi».
3 Saul thereupon took three thousand men selected from al Israel and went in search of David and hismen east of the Rocks of the Mountain Goats.	3 Presi con sè tremila uomini tra i più valorosi guerrieri di tutto Israele, andò alla ricerca di Davide e de' suoi, fin tra le rocce più scoscese accessibili soltanto ai camosci;
4 He came to the sheepfolds along the route, where there was a cave, and went in to cover his feet.Now David and his men were sitting in the recesses of the cave;	4 e giunse ai parchi di pecore, che si incontravano sul cammino. Eravi colà una grotta nella quale Saul entrò per certi suoi bisogni. Ora Davide coi suoi si trovava nascosto in fondo alla grotta,
5 David's men said to him, 'Today is the day of which Yahweh said to you, "I shall deliver your enemyinto your power; do what you like with him." ' David got up and, unobserved, cut off the border of Saul's cloak.	5 e i suoi compagni gli dissero: «Ecco il giorno del quale il Signore ti ha detto: - Io ti darò nelle mani il tuo nemico e ne farai ciò che ti piacerà -». Davide allora si levò e tagliò un lembo del mantello di Saul.
6 Afterwards David reproached himself for having cut off the border of Saul's cloak.	6 Dopo di che Davide ebbe rimorso al pensiero di aver tagliato il lembo del mantello di Saul
7 He said to his men, 'Yahweh preserve me from doing such a thing to my lord as to raise my handagainst him, since he is Yahweh's anointed.'	7 e disse ai suoi: «Dio mi sia propizio affinchè io non abbia a far una simile cosa al mio signore, l'unto del Signore, di alzar la mano contro di lui, perchè è l'unto del Signore».
8 By these words David restrained his men and would not let them attack Saul.	8 Con le sue parole Davide raffrenò i suoi e non permise che essi si gettassero sopra di Saul. Quando poi Saul si fu levato e, uscito dalla caverna, ebbe ripreso il cammino,
9 Saul then left the cave and went on his way. After this, David too left the cave and cal ed after Saul,'My lord king!' Saul looked behind him and David, bowing to the ground, prostrated himself.	9 si levò anche Davide dopo di lui e uscito dalla spelonca gridò dietro a Saul dicendo: «Re, mio signore». Saul si volse indietro, e Davide curvandosi fino a terra si prostrò
10 David then said to Saul, 'Why do you listen to people who say, "David intends your ruin"?	10 e disse a Saul: «Perchè dai ascolto a chi ti dice che Davide cerca il tuo male?
11 This very day you have seen for yourself how Yahweh put you in my power in the cave and how,refusing to kil you, I spared you saying, "I wil not raise my hand against my lord, since he is Yahweh'sanointed."	11 Guarda, oggi stesso i tuoi occhi videro che il Signore ti aveva dato nelle mie mani, nella caverna; e quantunque mi fosse venuto il pensiero di ucciderti, ebbi tuttavia pietà di te, e dissi: - Non stenderò la mano sul mio padrone, perchè è l'unto del Signore. -
12 Look, father, look at the border of your cloak in my hand. Since, although I cut the border off yourcloak, I did not kil you, surely you realise that I intend neither mischief nor crime. I have not wronged you, andyet you hunt me down to take my life.	12 Anzi, osserva, padre mio, e vedi il lembo del tuo mantello nella mia mano. Se pertanto, nel tagliare l'estremità del tuo mantello, non volli stendere la mia mano contro di te, devi ben persuaderti, che non c'è nella mia condotta nè malvagità, nè ribellione e che non ho peccato contro di te, mentre tu mi tendi insidie per farmi morire.
13 May Yahweh be judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me on you; but I shall neverlay a hand on you!	13 Il Signore sia giudice tra me e te e il Signore mi vendichi di te; ma la mia mano non sarà mai contro di te,
14 (As the old proverb says: Wickedness comes out of wicked people, but I shal never lay a hand onyou!)	14 giusta l'antico proverbio che dice: -Dagli iniqui viene l'empietà. - La mia mano dunque non deve essere contro di te.
15 On whose trail is the king of Israel campaigning? Whom are you pursuing? On the trail of a deaddog, of a flea!	15 E chi è poi, o re di Israele, quegli che tu perseguiti? Chi perseguiti tu? Tu insegui un cane morto, una pulce.
16 May Yahweh be the judge and decide between me and you; may he examine and defend my causeand give judgement for me by rescuing me from your clutches!'	16 Il Signore sia giudice tra me e te: veda e giudichi la mia causa, e mi liberi dalle tue mani».
17 When David had finished saying this to Saul, Saul said, 'Is that your voice, my son David?' And Saulbegan to weep aloud.	17 Come ebbe Davide finito di dire queste parole a Saul, questi gli disse: «Non è questa la voce tua, o figliuol mio Davide?». Poi Saul alzò la sua voce e si mise a piangere
18 'You are upright and I am not,' he said to David, 'since you have behaved wel to me, whereas I havebehaved badly to you.	18 e disse a Davide: «Tu sei più giusto di me, poichè tu mi hai fatto del bene mentre io non ti resi che male.
19 And today you have shown how well you have behaved to me, since Yahweh had put me in yourpower but you did not kil me.	19 E qual bene tu mi abbia fatto lo mostrasti oggi, quando avendomi il Signore dato in tua balìa, tu non mi uccidesti.
20 When a man comes on his enemy, does he let him go unmolested? May Yahweh reward you for thegood you have done me today!	20 Ora chi mai, essendosi imbattuto nel suo nemico, lo lascia andar per la sua strada? Ma il Signore ti dia il contraccambio dell'opera buona compiuta a mio riguardo.
21 Now I know that you wil indeed reign and that the sovereignty in Israel wil pass into your hands.	21 Ed ora, poichè so che certissimamente tu regnerai e avrai nella tua mano il regno d'Israele,
22 Now swear to me by Yahweh that you wil not suppress my descendants once I am gone, or blot myname out of my family.'	22 giurami per il Signore che non distruggerai la mia discendenza dopo di me e che non cancellerai il mio nome dalla casa del padre mio».
23 This David swore to Saul, and Saul went home while David and his men went back to the stronghold.	23 Davide lo giurò a Saul e questi se ne andò a casa, mentre Davide e i suoi salirono verso luoghi più sicuri.
