1 From there David went up and installed himself in the strongholds of En-Gedi.	1 De là David monta aux refuges d’Engaddi et il s’y installa.
2 Once Saul was back from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, 'David is now in the desert of En-Gedi.'	2 Quand Saül revint de sa campagne contre les Philistins, on lui dit: “David est au désert d’Engaddi.”
3 Saul thereupon took three thousand men selected from al Israel and went in search of David and hismen east of the Rocks of the Mountain Goats.	3 Saül choisit alors parmi tout Israël 3 000 hommes, et il partit avec eux à la recherche de David à l’est du Rocher des Bouquetins.
4 He came to the sheepfolds along the route, where there was a cave, and went in to cover his feet.Now David and his men were sitting in the recesses of the cave;	4 Il arriva ainsi aux parcs à brebis qui sont au bord du chemin, il y avait là une grotte où Saül entra pour satisfaire ses besoins. Or David et ses hommes étaient assis au fond de la grotte.
5 David's men said to him, 'Today is the day of which Yahweh said to you, "I shall deliver your enemyinto your power; do what you like with him." ' David got up and, unobserved, cut off the border of Saul's cloak.	5 Les compagnons de David lui dirent: “Aujourd’hui Yahvé livre ton ennemi entre tes mains. Tu peux lui faire maintenant tout ce que tu veux.” David se leva et alla couper en douce le pan du manteau de Saül,
6 Afterwards David reproached himself for having cut off the border of Saul's cloak.	6 24:7 Il dit à ses compagnons: “Oh non! Par la vie de Yahvé, je ne porterai pas la main sur lui! Je ne peux pas faire à mon seigneur une chose semblable car il est l’élu de Yahvé!”
7 He said to his men, 'Yahweh preserve me from doing such a thing to my lord as to raise my handagainst him, since he is Yahweh's anointed.'	7 24:8 Et par ses paroles David empêcha ses hommes de se jeter sur Saül. 5b David se leva et alla couper en douce le pan du manteau de Saül, 6 mais après cela le cœur lui battait d’avoir coupé le pan du manteau de Saül.
8 By these words David restrained his men and would not let them attack Saul.	8 24:8b Saül se leva, sortit de la grotte et reprit son chemin.
9 Saul then left the cave and went on his way. After this, David too left the cave and cal ed after Saul,'My lord king!' Saul looked behind him and David, bowing to the ground, prostrated himself.	9 À son tour David se leva et sortit de la grotte, il cria derrière Saül: “Mon seigneur le roi!” Saül se retourna et David se prosterna la face contre terre.
10 David then said to Saul, 'Why do you listen to people who say, "David intends your ruin"?	10 David dit alors à Saül: “Pourquoi écoutes-tu ceux qui te disent que je cherche ta perte?
11 This very day you have seen for yourself how Yahweh put you in my power in the cave and how,refusing to kil you, I spared you saying, "I wil not raise my hand against my lord, since he is Yahweh'sanointed."	11 Regarde toi-même, aujourd’hui Yahvé t’avait livré entre mes mains dans cette grotte, et l’on m’avait même dit de te tuer, mais j’ai eu pitié de toi. Je me suis dit: Je ne porterai pas la main sur mon seigneur, car il est l’élu de Yahvé.
12 Look, father, look at the border of your cloak in my hand. Since, although I cut the border off yourcloak, I did not kil you, surely you realise that I intend neither mischief nor crime. I have not wronged you, andyet you hunt me down to take my life.	12 Regarde, mon père, regarde le pan de ton manteau qui est dans ma main. Lorsque j’ai coupé le pan de ce manteau, j’aurais pu te tuer. Reconnais donc qu’il n’y a en moi ni malice ni méchanceté; je ne t’ai pas fait de tort, alors que toi tu me recherches pour me tuer.
13 May Yahweh be judge between me and you, and may Yahweh avenge me on you; but I shall neverlay a hand on you!	13 Que Yahvé juge entre moi et toi. Que Yahvé me venge de toi, mais ma main ne se dressera pas contre toi.
14 (As the old proverb says: Wickedness comes out of wicked people, but I shal never lay a hand onyou!)	14 Comme le dit le proverbe des anciens: C’est des méchants que sort la méchanceté. C’est pourquoi ma main ne se lèvera pas contre toi.
15 On whose trail is the king of Israel campaigning? Whom are you pursuing? On the trail of a deaddog, of a flea!	15 Après qui le roi d’Israël s’est-il lancé? Qui poursuit-il? un chien mort, une simple puce?
16 May Yahweh be the judge and decide between me and you; may he examine and defend my causeand give judgement for me by rescuing me from your clutches!'	16 Que Yahvé juge entre moi et toi. Qu’il examine et qu’il défende ma cause, qu’il me rende justice et me délivre de ta main.”
17 When David had finished saying this to Saul, Saul said, 'Is that your voice, my son David?' And Saulbegan to weep aloud.	17 Lorsque David eut terminé de prononcer ces paroles, Saül dit: “Est-ce bien ta voix, mon fils David?” Et Saül éclata en sanglots.
18 'You are upright and I am not,' he said to David, 'since you have behaved wel to me, whereas I havebehaved badly to you.	18 Il dit à David: “Tu es plus juste que moi, car tu m’as rendu le bien, et moi je t’avais fait le mal.
19 And today you have shown how well you have behaved to me, since Yahweh had put me in yourpower but you did not kil me.	19 Aujourd’hui tu as montré ta bonté envers moi, car Yahvé m’avait livré entre tes mains et tu ne m’as pas tué.
20 When a man comes on his enemy, does he let him go unmolested? May Yahweh reward you for thegood you have done me today!	20 Lorsqu’un homme rencontre son ennemi, le laisse-t-il poursuivre son chemin? Yahvé te récompensera du bien que tu m’as fait aujourd’hui.
21 Now I know that you wil indeed reign and that the sovereignty in Israel wil pass into your hands.	21 Dès maintenant je le sais: tu régneras et ta royauté en Israël sera inébranlable.
22 Now swear to me by Yahweh that you wil not suppress my descendants once I am gone, or blot myname out of my family.'	22 Jure-moi donc par Yahvé que tu ne supprimeras pas ma descendance après moi et que tu ne feras pas disparaître mon nom de la famille de mon père.”
23 This David swore to Saul, and Saul went home while David and his men went back to the stronghold.	23 Alors David le jura à Saül. Et Saül retourna chez lui tandis que David et ses compagnons remontaient au refuge.
