1 David left there and took refuge in the Cave of Adul am; his brothers and his father's whole familyheard this and joined him there.	1 Partitosi di là, David fuggì nella spelonca di Odollam. Avendolo saputo i suoi fratelli e tutta la casa di suo padre, vi andarono a trovarlo.
2 Al those in distress, al those in debt, al those who had a grievance, gathered round him and hebecame their leader. There were about four hundred men with him.	2 si adunarono presso di lui tutti quelli che si trovavano in strettezze, gli oppressi dai debiti e i malcontenti: egli ne divenne capo, e si trovò ad avere circa quattrocento uomini.
3 From there David went to Mizpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab, 'Allow my father and motherto stay with you until I know what God intends to do for me.'	3 Di là David andò in Masfa di Moab, e disse al re di Moab: « Permetti, ti prego, a mio padre e a mìa madre di restar con voi, finché io sappia quello che Dio farà di me ».
4 He left them with the king of Moab and there they stayed all the time that David was in the stronghold.	4 Così li lasciò presso il re di Moab, ove rimasero per tutto il tempo che David restò nella fortezza.
5 The prophet Gad, however, said to David, 'Do not stay in the stronghold; leave and make your wayinto the territory of Judah.' David then left and went to the forest of Hereth.	5 Ma il profeta Cad disse a David: a Non star più nella fortezza: parti e va nella, terra di Giuda ». David partì e andò nella foresta di Haret.

7 'Listen, Benjaminites!' said Saul to them, 'Is the son of Jesse going to give you all fields and vineyardsand make al of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds	7 disse ai suoi servi che lo circondavano: « Ascoltatemi, figli di Iemini: forse il figlio d'Isai vi darti a tutti dei campi e delle vigne, e vi farà tutti tribuni e centurioni?
8 that you al conspire against me? No one warned me when my son made a pact with the son of Jesse;none of you felt sorry for me or warned me when my son incited my servant to become my enemy, as he is now.'	8 Eppure, tutti congiurate, non vi è chi m'informi, specialmente dopo che il mio figlio ha fatto alleanza col figlio d'Isai. Non vi è tra voi chi compianga la mia sorte, perchè il mio figlio ha suscitato contro di me il mio servo, che fino ad oggi mi tende insidie! »
9 Then, up spoke Doeg the Edomite, who was in command of Saul's staff, 'I saw the son of Jessecoming to Nob, to Ahimelech son of Ahitub.	9 Allora Dog l'Idumeo, che era presente ed era il primo tra i servi di Saul, rispose, dicendo: « Io vidi il figlio d'Isai a Nobe, presso il sacerdote Achimelec, figlio di Achitob,
10 That man consulted Yahweh on his behalf, gave him provisions and also the sword of Goliath thePhilistine.'	10 il quale consultò per lui il Signore, gli diede dei viveri ed anche la spada di Golia Filisteo ».
11 The king then sent for the priest Ahimelech son of Ahitub and his whole family, the priests of Nob;they al came to the king.	11 Allora il re mandò a chiamare il sacerdote Achimelec, figlio di Achitob, e tutta la casa di suo padre, cioè i sacerdoti che erano in Nobe. Essendosi essi tutti presentati al re,
12 Saul said, 'Now listen, son of Ahitub!' He replied, 'Here I am, my lord.'	12 Saul disse ad Achimelec: « Ascolta, figlio di Achitob ». Ed egli rispose: « Son qui, o signore ».
13 'Why have you conspired against me,' said Saul, 'you and the son of Jesse, giving him bread and asword and consulting God on his behalf, for him to rebel against me as is now the case?'	13 E Saul: « Perchè avete congiurato contro di me tu e il figlio d'Isai, e tu gli hai dato dei pani e una spada, ed hai consultato Dio per lui, affinchè egli insorga contro di me e continui a tendermi insidie sino ad oggi? »
14 Ahimelech replied to the king, 'Of al those in your service, who is more loyal than David son-in-law tothe king, captain of your bodyguard, honoured in your household?	14 Achimelec, rispondendo al re, disse: « E chi fra tutti i tuoi servi è come David, fedele, genero del re, pronto al tuo comando e rispettato nella tua casa?
15 Was today the first time I ever consulted God on his behalf? Indeed it was not! The king has nogrounds for bringing any charge against his servant or against his whole family, for your servant knew nothingwhatever about al this.'	15 Ho cominciato forse oggi a consultar Dio per lui? Oh! Non avvenga mai che il re sospetti di tal cosa contro il suo servo e contro tutta la casa di mio padre, perchè il tuo servo di quest'affare non lì a saputo nulla, proprio nulla.
16 The king retorted, 'You must die, Ahimelech, you and your whole family.'	16 Ma il re disse: « Senza dubbio, tu morrai. Achimelec, tu e tutta la caso di tuo padre ».
17 The king said to the scouts who were standing round him, 'Forward! and put the priests of Yahweh todeath, for they too are on David's side, they knew that he was escaping, yet did not warn me of it.' The king'sprofessional soldiers, however, would not lift a hand to strike the priests of Yahweh.	17 Allora il re disse alle guardie che gii eran d'intorno: « Volgetevi o uccidete i sacerdoti del Signore, perche essi parteggiano per David, e, sapendo che egli era fuggito, non me l'han fatto sapere ». Ma i servi del re non vollero stendere le loro mani contro i sacerdoti del Signore.
18 The king then said to Doeg, 'Forward, you! Fall on the priests!' Doeg the Edomite stepped forwardand fel on the priests, himself that day kil ing eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.	18 E il re disse a Doeg: « Volgiti tu e avventati sopra i sacerdoti ». Doeg Idumeo, voltatosi, si gettò sopra i sacerdoti e in quel giorno trucidò ottantacinque uomini che portavano l'efod di lino.
19 Nob, the town of the priests, Saul put to the sword: men and women, children and infants, cattle,donkeys and sheep.	19 Percosse poi Nobe, città dei sacerdoti, mettendo a fil di spada uomini, donne, fanciulli, lattanti, buoi, asini e pecore.
20 One son of Ahimelech son of Ahitub alone escaped. His name was Abiathar, and he fled away to joinDavid.	20 Ma a un figlio di Achimelec, figlio di Achitob, chiamato Abiatar, potè scampare, e rifugiatosi presso David,
21 When Abiathar told David that Saul had slaughtered the priests of Yahweh,	21 gli raccontò come Saul avesse uccisi i sacerdoti del Signore.
22 David said to Abiathar, 'I knew, that day when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would be sure toinform Saul. I am responsible for the death of all your kinsmen.	22 David disse ad Abiatar: « Lo sapevo, in quel giorno, che essendovi Doeg Idumeo, egli avrebbe, senza dubbio, avvertito Saul: io son responsabile della morte di tutta la casa di tuo padre:
23 Stay with me, do not be afraid, for he who seeks your life seeks mine; you wil be safe with me.'	23 resta con me, non temere: chi cercherà la mia vita, cercherà anche la tua, e con me sarai salvo ».
