NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
David left there and took refuge in the Cave of Adul am; his brothers and his father's whole familyheard this and joined him there.1 Abiit ergo inde David et fugit in speluncam Odollam; quod cum audissent fratres eius et omnis domus patris eius, descenderunt ad eum illuc.
Al those in distress, al those in debt, al those who had a grievance, gathered round him and hebecame their leader. There were about four hundred men with him.2 Et convenerunt ad eum omnes, qui erant in angustia constituti et oppressi aere alieno et amaro animo; et factus est eorum princeps, fueruntque cum eo quasi quadringenti viri.
From there David went to Mizpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab, 'Allow my father and motherto stay with you until I know what God intends to do for me.'3 Et profectus est David inde in Maspha, quae est Moab, et dixit ad regem Moab: “ Maneat, oro, pater meus et mater mea vobiscum, donec sciam quid faciat mihi Deus ”.
He left them with the king of Moab and there they stayed all the time that David was in the stronghold.4 Et reliquit eos ante faciem regis Moab; manseruntque apud eum cunctis diebus, quibus David fuit in praesidio.
The prophet Gad, however, said to David, 'Do not stay in the stronghold; leave and make your wayinto the territory of Judah.' David then left and went to the forest of Hereth.5 Dixitquc Gad propheta ad David: “ Noli manere in praesidio. Proficiscere et vade in terram Iudae ”. Et profectus David venit in saltum Haret.
When Saul heard that David and the men with him had been discovered, Saul was at Gibeah, seatedunder the tamarisk on the high place, spear in hand, with al his staff standing round him.6 Et audivit Saul quod detectus fuisset David et viri, qui erant cum eo. Saul autem, cum maneret in Gabaa et esset sub myrice, quae est in excelso, hastam manu tenens, cunctique servi eius circumstarent eum,
'Listen, Benjaminites!' said Saul to them, 'Is the son of Jesse going to give you all fields and vineyardsand make al of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds7 ait ad servos suos, qui assistebant ei: “ Audite, Beniaminitae. Etiam omnibus vobis dabit filius Isai agros et vineas et universos vos faciet tribunos et centuriones,
that you al conspire against me? No one warned me when my son made a pact with the son of Jesse;none of you felt sorry for me or warned me when my son incited my servant to become my enemy, as he is now.'8 quoniam coniurastis omnes adversum me.
Then, up spoke Doeg the Edomite, who was in command of Saul's staff, 'I saw the son of Jessecoming to Nob, to Ahimelech son of Ahitub.9 Respondens autem Doeg Idumaeus, qui assistebat cum servis Saul: “ Vidi, inquit, filium Isai in Nob apud Achimelech filium Achitob;
That man consulted Yahweh on his behalf, gave him provisions and also the sword of Goliath thePhilistine.'10 qui consuluit pro eo Dominum et cibaria dedit ei, sed et gladium Goliath Philisthaei dedit illi ”.
The king then sent for the priest Ahimelech son of Ahitub and his whole family, the priests of Nob;they al came to the king.11 Misit ergo rex ad accersendum Achimelech sacerdotem filium Achitob et omnem domum patris eius, sacerdotum, qui erant in Nob; qui venerunt universi ad regem.
Saul said, 'Now listen, son of Ahitub!' He replied, 'Here I am, my lord.'12 Et ait Saul: “ Audi, fili Achitob ”. Qui respondit: “ Praesto sum, domine ”.
'Why have you conspired against me,' said Saul, 'you and the son of Jesse, giving him bread and asword and consulting God on his behalf, for him to rebel against me as is now the case?'13 Dixitque ad eum Saul: “ Quare coniurastis adversum me, tu et filius Isai, et dedisti ei panes et gladium et consuluisti pro eo Deum, ut consurgeret adversum me insidiator, sicut est hodie? ”.
Ahimelech replied to the king, 'Of al those in your service, who is more loyal than David son-in-law tothe king, captain of your bodyguard, honoured in your household?14 Respondensque Achimelech regi ait: “ Et quis in omnibus servis tuis sicut David fidelis et gener regis et dux satellitum tuorum et gloriosus in domo tua?
Was today the first time I ever consulted God on his behalf? Indeed it was not! The king has nogrounds for bringing any charge against his servant or against his whole family, for your servant knew nothingwhatever about al this.'15 Num hodie coepi consulere pro eo Deum? Absit hoc a me, ne suspicetur rex adversus servum suum rem huiuscemodi, adversus universam domum patris mei; non enim scivit servus tuus quidquam super hoc negotio, vel modicum vel grande ”.
The king retorted, 'You must die, Ahimelech, you and your whole family.'16 Dixitque rex: “ Morte morieris, Achimelech, tu et omnis domus patris tui ”.
The king said to the scouts who were standing round him, 'Forward! and put the priests of Yahweh todeath, for they too are on David's side, they knew that he was escaping, yet did not warn me of it.' The king'sprofessional soldiers, however, would not lift a hand to strike the priests of Yahweh.17 Et ait rex emissariis, qui circumstabant eum: “ Convertimini et interficite sacerdotes Domini, nam manus eorum cum David est; scientes quod fugisset, non indicaverunt mihi ”. Noluerunt autem servi regis extendere manum suam in sacerdotes Domini.
The king then said to Doeg, 'Forward, you! Fall on the priests!' Doeg the Edomite stepped forwardand fel on the priests, himself that day kil ing eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.18 Et ait rex ad Doeg: “ Convertere tu et irrue in sacerdotes ”. Conversusque Doeg Idumaeus irruit in sacerdotes; et trucidavit in die illa octoginta quinque viros vestitos ephod lineo.
Nob, the town of the priests, Saul put to the sword: men and women, children and infants, cattle, donkeys and sheep.19 Nob autem civitatem sacerdotum percussit in ore gladii, viros et mulieres, parvulos et lactantes, bovem et asinum et ovem in ore gladii.
One son of Ahimelech son of Ahitub alone escaped. His name was Abiathar, and he fled away to joinDavid.20 Evadens autem unus filius Achimelech filii Achitob, cuius nomen erat Abiathar, fugit ad David
When Abiathar told David that Saul had slaughtered the priests of Yahweh,21 et annuntiavit ei quod occidisset Saul sacerdotes Domini.
David said to Abiathar, 'I knew, that day when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would be sure toinform Saul. I am responsible for the death of all your kinsmen.22 Et ait David ad Abiathar: “ Sciebam in die illa quod, cum ibi esset Doeg Idumaeus, procul dubio annuntiaret Saul; ego sum reus omnium animarum domus patris tui.
Stay with me, do not be afraid, for he who seeks your life seeks mine; you wil be safe with me.'23 Mane mecum, ne timeas; qui enim quaerit animam meam, quaerit et animam tuam, mecumque servaberis ”.
