1 David left there and took refuge in the Cave of Adul am; his brothers and his father's whole familyheard this and joined him there.	1 - Se ne andò dunque Davide di là e fuggì nella spelonca di Odollam. Il che avendo udito i suoi fratelli e tutta la casa del padre suo, se ne vennero da lui.
2 Al those in distress, al those in debt, al those who had a grievance, gathered round him and hebecame their leader. There were about four hundred men with him.	2 Accorsero colà anche tutti quelli che si trovavano in angustia o che erano indebitati o comunque malcontenti e divenne loro capo ed ebbe con sè quasi quattrocento uomini.
3 From there David went to Mizpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab, 'Allow my father and motherto stay with you until I know what God intends to do for me.'	3 Davide di là si portò a Masfa nel paese di Moab e disse al re di Moab: «Rimangano, ti prego, il padre mio e la madre mia con voi fino a che io sappia cosa disponga di me Iddio».
4 He left them with the king of Moab and there they stayed all the time that David was in the stronghold.	4 E li lasciò presso il re di Moab e là rimasero per tutto il tempo che Davide fu in quella fortezza.
5 The prophet Gad, however, said to David, 'Do not stay in the stronghold; leave and make your wayinto the territory of Judah.' David then left and went to the forest of Hereth.	5 Il profeta Gad disse a Davide: «Non restare in questa fortezza; partiti e vattene nella terra di Giuda». Davide se ne partì e venne nel bosco di Aret.
6 When Saul heard that David and the men with him had been discovered, Saul was at Gibeah, seatedunder the tamarisk on the high place, spear in hand, with al his staff standing round him.	6 Saul seppe del ritorno di Davide e degli uomini che erano con lui, e standosene in Gabaa colla lancia in mano ed essendo in un bosco circondato da tutti i suoi servi,
7 'Listen, Benjaminites!' said Saul to them, 'Is the son of Jesse going to give you all fields and vineyardsand make al of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds	7 disse ai servi, che gli stavano attorno: «Ascoltatemi, o figli di Jemini; darà a voi tutti il figlio di Isai campi e vigne e vi costituirà tutti tribuni e centurioni;
8 that you al conspire against me? No one warned me when my son made a pact with the son of Jesse;none of you felt sorry for me or warned me when my son incited my servant to become my enemy, as he is now.'	8 poichè avete tutti voi congiurato contro di me e non vi è nessuno che mi avverta, tanto più dopo che lo stesso figliuol mio ha stretto alleanza col figlio di Isai? E non vi è tra voi chi compianga la mia sorte e mi avverta che il mio figlio mi ha sollevato contro il servo, che fino ad ora non fece che tendermi insidie?».
9 Then, up spoke Doeg the Edomite, who was in command of Saul's staff, 'I saw the son of Jessecoming to Nob, to Ahimelech son of Ahitub.	9 Doeg Idumeo, che era presente e che era uno dei principali servi di Saul, rispose così: «Ho visto il figlio di Isai in Nobe presso il sacerdote Achimelec figlio di Achitob.
10 That man consulted Yahweh on his behalf, gave him provisions and also the sword of Goliath thePhilistine.'	10 Questi consultò per lui il Signore, lo fornì di cibi e gli consegnò anche la spada di Golia, il Filisteo».
11 The king then sent for the priest Ahimelech son of Ahitub and his whole family, the priests of Nob;they al came to the king.	11 Il re mandò allora a chiamare Achimelec sacerdote figlio di Achitob e tutta la famiglia del padre di lui, dei sacerdoti cioè che erano in Nobe. Venuti tutti al cospetto del re,
12 Saul said, 'Now listen, son of Ahitub!' He replied, 'Here I am, my lord.'	12 Saul disse ad Achimelec: «Ascolta, figlio di Achitob»; questi rispose: «Sono ai tuoi ordini, o Signore».
13 'Why have you conspired against me,' said Saul, 'you and the son of Jesse, giving him bread and asword and consulting God on his behalf, for him to rebel against me as is now the case?'	13 E Saul gli domandò: «Perchè avete congiurato contro di me tu e il figlio di Isai e gli hai dato del pane e una spada e consultasti per lui Iddio, perchè insorgesse contro di me, egli che fino ad oggi non fece che tendermi insidie?».
14 Ahimelech replied to the king, 'Of al those in your service, who is more loyal than David son-in-law tothe king, captain of your bodyguard, honoured in your household?	14 Rispose Achimelec al re: «E chi mai tra tutti i tuoi servi è fedele come Davide, lui, genero del re, esecutore dei tuoi ordini e tenuto in alto conto nella tua casa?
15 Was today the first time I ever consulted God on his behalf? Indeed it was not! The king has nogrounds for bringing any charge against his servant or against his whole family, for your servant knew nothingwhatever about al this.'	15 Da oggi soltanto ho cominciato a consultare per lui il Signore? Lungi da me ciò: nè mai il re sospetti una cosa simile in tutta la casa del padre mio: il tuo servo non seppe cosa alcuna, nè piccola nè grande, di tutto questo affare».
16 The king retorted, 'You must die, Ahimelech, you and your whole family.'	16 Soggiunse il re: «Tu morrai senz'altro, Achimelec, tu e tutta la famiglia del padre tuo».
17 The king said to the scouts who were standing round him, 'Forward! and put the priests of Yahweh todeath, for they too are on David's side, they knew that he was escaping, yet did not warn me of it.' The king'sprofessional soldiers, however, would not lift a hand to strike the priests of Yahweh.	17 Poi alle guardie che gli stavano attorno disse: «Voltatevi e uccidete i sacerdoti del Signore, perchè essi parteggiano per Davide e sapendo ch'egli era fuggito non me ne hanno informato». Ma i ministri del re non vollero mettere le mani sopra i sacerdoti del Signore;
18 The king then said to Doeg, 'Forward, you! Fall on the priests!' Doeg the Edomite stepped forwardand fel on the priests, himself that day kil ing eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.	18 perciò rivoltosi il re a Doeg gli disse: «Voltati tu e gettati sui sacerdoti». Si volse allora Doeg, l'Idumeo, e gettatosi sui sacerdoti uccise in quel giorno ben ottantacinque uomini vestiti coll'efod di lino.
19 Nob, the town of the priests, Saul put to the sword: men and women, children and infants, cattle,donkeys and sheep.	19 In Nobe poi, città dei sacerdoti, furono passati a fil di spada uomini, donne, bambini, lattanti, perfino i buoi, gli asini e le pecore.
20 One son of Ahimelech son of Ahitub alone escaped. His name was Abiathar, and he fled away to joinDavid.	20 Uno solo dei figli di Achimelec figlio di Achitob il cui nome era Abiatar, sfuggito alla strage, andò da Davide
21 When Abiathar told David that Saul had slaughtered the priests of Yahweh,	21 e gli annunziò che Saul aveva ucciso i sacerdoti del Signore.
22 David said to Abiathar, 'I knew, that day when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would be sure toinform Saul. I am responsible for the death of all your kinsmen.	22 Disse Davide ad Abiatar: «Me lo immaginai quel giorno, poichè essendovi colà Doeg, l'Idumeo, egli ne avrebbe senza dubbio parlato a Saul. Io son quindi reo della morte di tutta la famiglia di tuo padre.
23 Stay with me, do not be afraid, for he who seeks your life seeks mine; you wil be safe with me.'	23 Tu resta con me e non temere: se alcuno attenterà alla mia vita, attenterà anche alla tua; con me sarai salvo».
