1 David left there and took refuge in the Cave of Adul am; his brothers and his father's whole familyheard this and joined him there.	1 David partit de là et se mit en sûreté dans la grotte d’Adoullam. Ses frères et sa famille l’apprirent et descendirent vers lui en ce lieu.
2 Al those in distress, al those in debt, al those who had a grievance, gathered round him and hebecame their leader. There were about four hundred men with him.	2 Tous ceux qui avaient des ennuis se rassemblèrent également autour de lui, tous ceux qui étaient poursuivis par un créancier ou qui étaient mécontents. Il devint leur chef, et avec lui ils étaient environ 400.
3 From there David went to Mizpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab, 'Allow my father and motherto stay with you until I know what God intends to do for me.'	3 De là David alla à Mispé de Moab. Il dit au roi de Moab: “J’aimerais que mon père et ma mère se retirent chez toi jusqu’à ce que je sache ce que Dieu me réserve.”
4 He left them with the king of Moab and there they stayed all the time that David was in the stronghold.	4 Il conduisit ses parents chez le roi de Moab et ils restèrent là jusqu’au jour où David quitta le refuge.
5 The prophet Gad, however, said to David, 'Do not stay in the stronghold; leave and make your wayinto the territory of Judah.' David then left and went to the forest of Hereth.	5 Le prophète Gad dit un jour à David: “Ne reste pas au refuge, va et rentre au pays de Juda.” David s’en alla et arriva à la forêt de Hérèt.
6 When Saul heard that David and the men with him had been discovered, Saul was at Gibeah, seatedunder the tamarisk on the high place, spear in hand, with al his staff standing round him.	6 Saül apprit que l’on avait des nouvelles de David et des hommes qui étaient avec lui. Saül siégeait à ce moment à Guibéa sous le tamaris qui est sur la colline: il avait sa lance à la main et tous ses serviteurs étaient debout autour de lui.
7 'Listen, Benjaminites!' said Saul to them, 'Is the son of Jesse going to give you all fields and vineyardsand make al of you commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds	7 Saül dit alors à ses serviteurs réunis autour de lui: “Écoutez donc, hommes de Benjamin! Croyez-vous que le fils de Jessé vous donnera aussi à tous des champs et des vignes, et qu’il fera de vous tous des chefs de mille et des chefs de cent?
8 that you al conspire against me? No one warned me when my son made a pact with the son of Jesse;none of you felt sorry for me or warned me when my son incited my servant to become my enemy, as he is now.'	8 Pourquoi êtes-vous tous d’accord contre moi? Personne ne m’a prévenu que mon fils avait fait une alliance avec le fils de Jessé. Nul d’entre vous ne s’inquiète pour moi, pas un ne m’a révélé que mon fils avait soulevé contre moi mon serviteur et m’en avait fait un adversaire, comme c’est le cas aujourd’hui.”
9 Then, up spoke Doeg the Edomite, who was in command of Saul's staff, 'I saw the son of Jessecoming to Nob, to Ahimelech son of Ahitub.	9 Doëg l’Édomite, qui était l’un des chefs des serviteurs de Saül, prit alors la parole: “J’ai vu le fils de Jessé quand il arrivait à Nob chez Ahimélek fils d’Ahitoub.
10 That man consulted Yahweh on his behalf, gave him provisions and also the sword of Goliath thePhilistine.'	10 Celui-ci a consulté Yahvé pour lui, il lui a donné des provisions et lui a remis l’épée de Goliath le Philistin.”
11 The king then sent for the priest Ahimelech son of Ahitub and his whole family, the priests of Nob;they al came to the king.	11 Alors Saül fit appeler le prêtre Ahimélek fils d’Ahitoub, et toute sa famille, les prêtres de Nob; ils arrivèrent tous chez le roi.
12 Saul said, 'Now listen, son of Ahitub!' He replied, 'Here I am, my lord.'	12 Saül dit: “Écoute-moi donc, fils d’Ahitoub.” Il répondit: “Me voici, mon seigneur.”
13 'Why have you conspired against me,' said Saul, 'you and the son of Jesse, giving him bread and asword and consulting God on his behalf, for him to rebel against me as is now the case?'	13 Saül lui dit: “Pourquoi avez-vous conspiré contre moi, toi et le fils de Jessé? Tu lui as donné du pain et une épée, tu as consulté Dieu pour lui, pour qu’il se soulève contre moi, et il s’est fait mon adversaire, comme on le voit aujourd’hui.”
14 Ahimelech replied to the king, 'Of al those in your service, who is more loyal than David son-in-law tothe king, captain of your bodyguard, honoured in your household?	14 Ahimélek répondit au roi: “Qui était fidèle comme David parmi tous les serviteurs du roi? Il est le gendre du roi, il est affecté à sa garde personnelle, il est honoré dans sa maison.
15 Was today the first time I ever consulted God on his behalf? Indeed it was not! The king has nogrounds for bringing any charge against his servant or against his whole family, for your servant knew nothingwhatever about al this.'	15 Assurément, ce n’est pas la première fois que j’ai consulté Dieu pour lui. Que le roi ne me reproche rien, pas plus qu’à toute la maison de mon père, ton serviteur ne savait rien de tout cela, absolument rien.”
16 The king retorted, 'You must die, Ahimelech, you and your whole family.'	16 Mais le roi dit: “Ahimélek, tu vas mourir, toi et toute la maison de ton père avec toi.”
17 The king said to the scouts who were standing round him, 'Forward! and put the priests of Yahweh todeath, for they too are on David's side, they knew that he was escaping, yet did not warn me of it.' The king'sprofessional soldiers, however, would not lift a hand to strike the priests of Yahweh.	17 Puis le roi dit aux soldats qui étaient autour de lui: “Avancez et mettez à mort les prêtres de Yahvé, car eux aussi soutiennent David. Ils savaient qu’il s’enfuyait loin de moi et ils ne m’ont rien dit.” Mais les serviteurs du roi ne voulurent pas frapper les prêtres de Yahvé.
18 The king then said to Doeg, 'Forward, you! Fall on the priests!' Doeg the Edomite stepped forwardand fel on the priests, himself that day kil ing eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.	18 Alors le roi dit à Doëg: “Avance toi, et frappe les prêtres.” Et Doëg l’Édomite s’avança et frappa les prêtres. Ce jour-là il mit à mort 85 hommes qui portaient le pagne de lin.
19 Nob, the town of the priests, Saul put to the sword: men and women, children and infants, cattle,donkeys and sheep.	19 Nob, la ville des prêtres, fut passée au fil de l’épée: hommes et femmes, enfants et nourrissons, on passa tout au fil de l’épée, y compris les bœufs, les ânes et les moutons.
20 One son of Ahimelech son of Ahitub alone escaped. His name was Abiathar, and he fled away to joinDavid.	20 Seul échappa un fils d’Ahimélek fils d’Ahitoub, il s’appelait Ébyatar. Il courut rejoindre David.
21 When Abiathar told David that Saul had slaughtered the priests of Yahweh,	21 Ébyatar raconta à David comment Saül avait tué les prêtres de Yahvé,
22 David said to Abiathar, 'I knew, that day when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would be sure toinform Saul. I am responsible for the death of all your kinsmen.	22 et David lui dit: “Doëg l’Édomite était présent ce jour-là et je savais bien qu’il préviendrait Saül. C’est moi qui ai causé la mort de toute ta famille.
23 Stay with me, do not be afraid, for he who seeks your life seeks mine; you wil be safe with me.'	23 Reste donc avec moi et ne crains rien, celui qui s’en prend à ta vie s’en prend à la mienne: à côté de moi tu seras bien gardé.”
