NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Saul let his son Jonathan and al his servants know of his intention to kil David. But Jonathan, Saul'sson, held David in great affection;1 Locutus est autem Saul ad Jonathan filium suum, et ad omnes servos suos, ut occiderent David. Porro Jonathas filius Saul diligebat David valde :
and Jonathan warned David, 'My father Saul is looking for a way to kil you, so be on your guardtomorrow morning; go into hiding, stay out of sight.2 et indicavit Jonathas David, dicens : Quærit Saul pater meus occidere te : quapropter observa te, quæso, mane : et manebis clam, et absconderis.
I shal go out and keep my father company in the countryside where you wil be, and shal talk to myfather about you; I shal see what the situation is and then tel you.'3 Ego autem egrediens stabo juxta patrem meum in agro, ubicumque fueris : et ego loquar de te ad patrem meum, et quodcumque videro, nuntiabo tibi.
Jonathan spoke highly of David to Saul his father and said, 'The king should not harm his servantDavid; far from harming you, what he has done has been greatly to your advantage.4 Locutus est ergo Jonathas de David bona ad Saul patrem suum : dixitque ad eum : Ne pecces rex in servum tuum David, quia non peccavit tibi, et opera ejus bona sunt tibi valde.
He took his life in his hands, he killed the Philistine, and Yahweh brought about a great victory for al Israel. You saw for yourself. How pleased you were! Why then sin against innocent blood by kil ing David for noreason?'5 Et posuit animam suam in manu sua, et percussit Philisthæum, et fecit Dominus salutem magnam universo Israëli : vidisti, et lætatus es. Quare ergo peccas in sanguine innoxio, interficiens David, qui est absque culpa ?
Saul was impressed by Jonathan's words. Saul swore, 'As Yahweh lives, I wil not kill him.'6 Quod cum audisset Saul, placatus voce Jonathæ, juravit : Vivit Dominus, quia non occidetur.
Jonathan called David and told him al this. Jonathan then brought him to Saul, and David remained inattendance as before.7 Vocavit itaque Jonathas David, et indicavit ei omnia verba hæc : et introduxit Jonathas David ad Saul, et fuit ante eum sicut fuerat heri et nudiustertius.
War broke out again and David sallied out to fight the Philistines; he inflicted a great defeat on themand they fled before him.8 Motum est autem rursum bellum : et egressus David, pugnavit adversum Philisthiim : percussitque eos plaga magna, et fugerunt a facie ejus.
An evil spirit from Yahweh came over Saul while he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand;David was playing the harp.9 Et factus est spiritus Domini malus in Saul : sedebat autem in domo sua, et tenebat lanceam : porro David psallebat manu sua.
Saul tried to pin David to the wal with his spear, but he avoided Saul's thrust and the spear stuck inthe wal . David fled and made good his escape. That same night10 Nisusque est Saul configere David lancea in pariete, et declinavit David a facie Saul : lancea autem casso vulnere perlata est in parietem, et David fugit, et salvatus est nocte illa.
Saul sent agents to watch David's house, intending to kil him in the morning. But Michal, David'swife, warned him, 'If you do not escape tonight, you wil be a dead man tomorrow!'11 Misit ergo Saul satellites suos in domum David, ut custodirent eum, et interficeretur mane. Quod cum annuntiasset David Michol uxor sua, dicens : Nisi salvaveris te nocte hac, cras morieris :
Michal then let David down through the window, and he made off, took to flight and so escaped.12 deposuit eum per fenestram.
Michal then took a domestic image, laid it on the bed, put a tress of goats' hair at the head of the bedand put a cover over it.13 Tulit autem Michol statuam, et posuit eam super lectum, et pellem pilosam caprarum posuit ad caput ejus, et operuit eam vestimentis.
When Saul sent the agents to arrest David, she said, 'He is il .'14 Misit autem Saul apparitores, qui raperent David : et responsum est quod ægrotaret.
Saul sent the agents back to see David, with the words, 'Bring him to me on his bed, for me to kilhim!'15 Rursumque misit Saul nuntios ut viderent David, dicens : Afferte eum ad me in lecto, ut occidatur.
So in the agents went, and there in bed was the image, with the tress of goats' hair on its head!16 Cumque venissent nuntii, inventum est simulacrum super lectum, et pellis caprarum ad caput ejus.
Saul then said to Michal, 'Why have you deceived me like this and let my enemy go, and so make hisescape?' Michal replied to Saul, 'He said, "Let me go, or I shal kill you!" '17 Dixitque Saul ad Michol : Quare sic illusisti mihi, et dimisisti inimicum meum ut fugeret ? Et respondit Michol ad Saul : Quia ipse locutus est mihi : Dimitte me, alioquin interficiam te.
David, having fled and made his escape, went to Samuel at Ramah and told him exactly how Saulhad treated him; he and Samuel went and lived in the huts.18 David autem fugiens salvatus est, et venit ad Samuel in Ramatha, et nuntiavit ei omnia quæ fecerat sibi Saul : et abierunt ipse et Samuel, et morati sunt in Najoth.
Word was brought to Saul, 'David is in the huts at Ramah.'19 Nuntiatum est autem Sauli a dicentibus : Ecce David in Najoth in Ramatha.
Saul accordingly sent agents to capture David; when they saw the community of prophetsprophesying, and Samuel there as their leader, the spirit of God came over Saul's agents, and they too fel intofrenzy.20 Misit ergo Saul lictores, ut raperent David : qui cum vidissent cuneum prophetarum vaticinantium, et Samuelem stantem super eos, factus est etiam spiritus Domini in illis, et prophetare cœperunt etiam ipsi.
When Saul was told of this, he sent other agents, and they too fel into frenzy; Saul then sent a thirdgroup of agents, and they fel into frenzy too.21 Quod cum nuntiatum esset Sauli, misit et alios nuntios : prophetaverunt autem et illi.
He then went to Ramah himself and, arriving at the large storage-wel at Seku, asked, 'Where areSamuel and David?'
Making his way from there to the huts at Ramah, the spirit of God came over him too, and he wentalong in a frenzy until he arrived at the huts at Ramah.23 Et abiit in Najoth in Ramatha, et factus est etiam super eum spiritus Domini, et ambulabat ingrediens, et prophetabat usque dum veniret in Najoth in Ramatha.
He too stripped off his clothes and he too fell into a frenzy in Samuel's presence, then col apsednaked on the ground for the rest of that day and al night. Hence the saying: Is Saul one of the prophets too?24 Et expoliavit etiam ipse se vestimentis suis, et prophetavit cum ceteris coram Samuele, et cecidit nudus tota die illa et nocte.
