1 Samuel 19

1 Saul let his son Jonathan and al his servants know of his intention to kil David. But Jonathan, Saul'sson, held David in great affection;	1 וידבר שאול אל יונתן בנו ואל כל עבדיו להמית את דוד ויהונתן בן שאול חפץ בדוד מאד
2 and Jonathan warned David, 'My father Saul is looking for a way to kil you, so be on your guardtomorrow morning; go into hiding, stay out of sight.	2 ויגד יהונתן לדוד לאמר מבקש שאול אבי להמיתך ועתה השמר נא בבקר וישבת בסתר ונחבאת
3 I shal go out and keep my father company in the countryside where you wil be, and shal talk to myfather about you; I shal see what the situation is and then tel you.'	3 ואני אצא ועמדתי ליד אבי בשדה אשר אתה שם ואני אדבר בך אל אבי וראיתי מה והגדתי לך
4 Jonathan spoke highly of David to Saul his father and said, 'The king should not harm his servantDavid; far from harming you, what he has done has been greatly to your advantage.	4 וידבר יהונתן בדוד טוב אל שאול אביו ויאמר אליו אל יחטא המלך בעבדו בדוד כי לוא חטא לך וכי מעשיו טוב לך מאד
5 He took his life in his hands, he killed the Philistine, and Yahweh brought about a great victory for al Israel. You saw for yourself. How pleased you were! Why then sin against innocent blood by kil ing David for noreason?'	5 וישם את נפשו בכפו ויך את הפלשתי ויעש יהוה תשועה גדולה לכל ישראל ראית ותשמח ולמה תחטא בדם נקי להמית את דוד חנם
6 Saul was impressed by Jonathan's words. Saul swore, 'As Yahweh lives, I wil not kill him.'	6 וישמע שאול בקול יהונתן וישבע שאול חי יהוה אם יומת
7 Jonathan called David and told him al this. Jonathan then brought him to Saul, and David remained inattendance as before.	7 ויקרא יהונתן לדוד ויגד לו יהונתן את כל הדברים האלה ויבא יהונתן את דוד אל שאול ויהי לפניו כאתמול שלשום
8 War broke out again and David sallied out to fight the Philistines; he inflicted a great defeat on themand they fled before him.	8 ותוסף המלחמה להיות ויצא דוד וילחם בפלשתים ויך בהם מכה גדולה וינסו מפניו
9 An evil spirit from Yahweh came over Saul while he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand;David was playing the harp.	9 ותהי רוח יהוה רעה אל שאול והוא בביתו יושב וחניתו בידו ודוד מנגן ביד
10 Saul tried to pin David to the wal with his spear, but he avoided Saul's thrust and the spear stuck inthe wal . David fled and made good his escape. That same night	10 ויבקש שאול להכות בחנית בדוד ובקיר ויפטר מפני שאול ויך את החנית בקיר ודוד נס וימלט בלילה הוא
11 Saul sent agents to watch David's house, intending to kil him in the morning. But Michal, David'swife, warned him, 'If you do not escape tonight, you wil be a dead man tomorrow!'	11 וישלח שאול מלאכים אל בית דוד לשמרו ולהמיתו בבקר ותגד לדוד מיכל אשתו לאמר אם אינך ממלט את נפשך הלילה מחר אתה מומת
12 Michal then let David down through the window, and he made off, took to flight and so escaped.	12 ותרד מיכל את דוד בעד החלון וילך ויברח וימלט
13 Michal then took a domestic image, laid it on the bed, put a tress of goats' hair at the head of the bedand put a cover over it.	13 ותקח מיכל את התרפים ותשם אל המטה ואת כביר העזים שמה מראשתיו ותכס בבגד
14 When Saul sent the agents to arrest David, she said, 'He is il .'	14 וישלח שאול מלאכים לקחת את דוד ותאמר חלה הוא
15 Saul sent the agents back to see David, with the words, 'Bring him to me on his bed, for me to kilhim!'	15 וישלח שאול את המלאכים לראות את דוד לאמר העלו אתו במטה אלי להמתו
16 So in the agents went, and there in bed was the image, with the tress of goats' hair on its head!	16 ויבאו המלאכים והנה התרפים אל המטה וכביר העזים מראשתיו
17 Saul then said to Michal, 'Why have you deceived me like this and let my enemy go, and so make hisescape?' Michal replied to Saul, 'He said, "Let me go, or I shal kill you!" '	17 ויאמר שאול אל מיכל למה ככה רמיתני ותשלחי את איבי וימלט ותאמר מיכל אל שאול הוא אמר אלי שלחני למה אמיתך
18 David, having fled and made his escape, went to Samuel at Ramah and told him exactly how Saulhad treated him; he and Samuel went and lived in the huts.	18 ודוד ברח וימלט ויבא אל שמואל הרמתה ויגד לו את כל אשר עשה לו שאול וילך הוא ושמואל וישבו בנוית
19 Word was brought to Saul, 'David is in the huts at Ramah.'	19 ויגד לשאול לאמר הנה דוד בנוית ברמה
20 Saul accordingly sent agents to capture David; when they saw the community of prophetsprophesying, and Samuel there as their leader, the spirit of God came over Saul's agents, and they too fel intofrenzy.	20 וישלח שאול מלאכים לקחת את דוד וירא את להקת הנביאים נבאים ושמואל עמד נצב עליהם ותהי על מלאכי שאול רוח אלהים ויתנבאו גם המה
21 When Saul was told of this, he sent other agents, and they too fel into frenzy; Saul then sent a thirdgroup of agents, and they fel into frenzy too.	21 ויגדו לשאול וישלח מלאכים אחרים ויתנבאו גם המה ויסף שאול וישלח מלאכים שלשים ויתנבאו גם המה
22 He then went to Ramah himself and, arriving at the large storage-wel at Seku, asked, 'Where areSamuel and David?' And someone said, 'Why, they are in the huts at Ramah!'	22 וילך גם הוא הרמתה ויבא עד בור הגדול אשר בשכו וישאל ויאמר איפה שמואל ודוד ויאמר הנה בנוית ברמה
23 Making his way from there to the huts at Ramah, the spirit of God came over him too, and he wentalong in a frenzy until he arrived at the huts at Ramah.	23 וילך שם אל נוית ברמה ותהי עליו גם הוא רוח אלהים וילך הלוך ויתנבא עד באו בנוית ברמה
24 He too stripped off his clothes and he too fell into a frenzy in Samuel's presence, then col apsednaked on the ground for the rest of that day and al night. Hence the saying: Is Saul one of the prophets too?	24 ויפשט גם הוא בגדיו ויתנבא גם הוא לפני שמואל ויפל ערם כל היום ההוא וכל הלילה על כן יאמרו הגם שאול בנביאם
