1 Abimelech son of Jerubbaal confronted his mother's brothers at Shechem and, to them and to the wholeclan of his maternal grandfather's family, he said,	1 Abimelec, filho de Jerobaal, foi a Siquem ter com os irmãos de sua mãe e disse-lhes, assim como toda a parentela da casa do pai de sua mãe:
2 'Please put this question to the leading men of Shechem: Which is better for you: to be ruled by seventypeople -- al Jerubbaal's sons -- or to be ruled by one? Remember too that I am your own flesh and bone.'	2 Dizei a todos os homens de Sequim: Qual é melhor para vós, serdes dominados por setenta homens, filhos todos de Jerobaal, ou por um só homem? Considerai também que eu sou vosso osso e vossa carne.
3 His mother's brothers said al this on his behalf to al the leading men of Shechem, and their feelingsswayed them to follow Abimelech, since they argued, 'He is our brother.'	3 Os irmãos de sua mãe falaram dele a todos os homens de Siquem, referindo todas as palavras, e inclinaram o seu coração a favor de Abimelec, dizendo: É nosso irmão.
4 So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith, and with this Abimelech paidviolent adventurers to fol ow him.	4 (Os Siquemitas) deram-lhe setenta siclos de prata do templo de Baalberit, com os quais tomou a seu soldo homens miseráveis e aventureiros, que o seguiram.
5 He then went to his father's house at Ophrah and put his brothers, Jerubbaal's seventy sons, to deathon one and the same stone. Jotham, however, Jerubbaal's youngest son, escaped by going into hiding.	5 Foi à casa de seu pai, em Efra , e matou, sobre uma só pedra, os seus irmãos, filhos de Jerobaal, setenta homens; escapou somente Joatão, filho mais novo de Jerobaal, que se escondeu.
6 All the leading men of Shechem and al Beth-Mil o then met and proclaimed Abimelech king at the oakof the cultic stone at Shechem.	6 Então juntaram-se todos os Siquemitas, com todas as famílias da casa de Melo; vieram e constituiram rei a Abimelec, junto do terebinto, que havia em Siquém.
7 News of this was brought to Jotham. He went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted at thetop of his voice: Hear me, leaders of Shechem, so that God may also hear you!	7 Tendo sido avisado disto Joatão, foi e parou sobre o cimo do monte Garizim, e levantando a voz, clamou, dizendo: Ouvi-me homens de Siquém, para que, assim, Deus vos ouça.
8 One day the trees went out to anoint a king to rule them. They said to the olive tree, 'Be our king!'	8 Foram (uma vez) as árvores, para eleger sobre si um rei, e disseram à oliveira: Reina sobre nós.
9 The olive tree replied, 'Must I forgo my oil which gives honour to gods and men, to stand and sway overthe trees?'	9 Mas ela respondeu: Porventura posso eu deixar o meu óleo, de que se servem os deuses e os homens, para vir a ser superior entre as árvores?
10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'You come and be our king!'	10 E as árvores disseram à figueira: Vem e reina sobre nós.
11 The fig tree replied, 'Must I forgo my sweetness, forgo my excel ent fruit, to go and sway over thetrees?'	11 Mas ela respondeu-Ihes: Porventura posso eu deixar a minha doçura, os meus suavíssimos frutos, para ir ser superior entre as outras árvores?
12 Then the trees said to the vine, 'You come and be our king!'	12 E as árvores disseram à videira; Vem e reina sobre nós.
13 The vine replied, 'Must I forgo my wine which cheers gods and men, to go and sway over the trees?'	13 Mas ela respondeu-lhes: Porventura posso eu deixar o meu vinho, que alegra Deus (nos sacrifícios) e os homens, para ser superior entre as outras árvores?
14 Then the trees al said to the thorn bush, 'You come and be our king!'	14 E todas as árvores disseram ao espinheiro: Vem e reina sobre nós.
15 And the thorn bush replied to the trees, 'If you are anointing me in good faith to be your king, come andshelter in my shade. But, if not, fire will come out of the thorn bush and devour the cedars of Lebanon.'	15 E ele respondeu-lhes: Se vós deveras me constituis vosso rei, vinde e repousai debaixo da minha sombra; mas, se o não quereis, saia fogo do espinheiro e devore os cedros do Líbano.
16 'Now then, if you have acted in sincerity and good faith in making Abimelech king, if you have dealthonourably with Jerubbaal and his family, and have treated him as his actions deserved,	16 Agora pois, se, com rectidão e sem pecado, constituistes vosso rei a Abimelec, se vos portastes bem com Jerobaal e com a sua casa, correspondendo aos benefícios daquele que combateu por vós,
17 my father having fought for you, risked his life and rescued you from the power of Midian,	17 e que expôs a sua própria vida aos perigos, para vos livrar da mão de Madian,
18 and you today having risen up against my father's family, murdered his sons -- seventy of them on oneand the same stone -- and appointed Abimelech, his slave-girl's son, to rule the leading men of Shechem,because he is your brother!-	18 — vós, que agora vos levantastes contra a casa de meu pai, matastes setenta homens seus filhos, sobre uma só pedra, e constituistes rei dos habitantes de Siquém a Abimelec, filho duma sua escrava, porque é vosso irmão, —
19 if, I say, you have acted in sincerity and good faith towards Jerubbaal and his family, then mayAbimelech be your joy and may you be his!	19 se, pois, procedestes com rectidão e sem pecado, com Jerobaal e com a sua casa, alegrai-vos hoje com Abimelec, e ele se alegre convosco.
20 If not, may fire come out of Abimelech and devour the leading men of Shechem and Beth-Mil o, andfire come out of the leading men of Shechem and Beth-Mil o to devour Abimelech!'	20 Mas, se procedestes perversamente, saia fogo dele, e devore os habitantes de Siquém, e a cidade de Melo; e saia fogo dos homens de Siquém e da casa de Melo, e devore Abimelec.
21 Jotham then took to his heels; he fled and made his way to Beer; and there he stayed, to be out of hisbrother Abimelech's reach.	21 Tendo dito estas palavras, fugiu e foi para Bera, onde habitou, por temer Abimelec, seu irmão.
22 Abimelech ruled Israel for three years.	22 Reinou Abimelec sobre Israel durante três anos,
23 God then sent a spirit of discord between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders ofShechem betrayed Abimelech.	23 mas o Senhor enviou um péssimo espírito entre Abimelec e os habitantes de Siquém, que se tornaram infiéis a Abimelech,
24 And this was so that the crime committed against Jerubbaal's seventy sons should be avenged, andtheir blood recoil on their brother Abimelech who had murdered them, and on those leaders of Shechem whohad helped him to murder his brothers.	24 para que assim fosse vingado o crime da morte dos setenta filhos de Jerobaal, e o seu sangue caísse sobre Abimelec, seu irmão, e sobre os outros Siquemitas, que o tinham auxiliado.
25 The leaders of Shechem put men to ambush him on the mountain tops, and these robbed anyonetravel ing their way. Abimelech was told of this.	25 Os homens de Siquém armaram contra ele ciladas no alto dos montes; e, enquanto ali esperavam que viesse, cometiam roubos, despojando os que passavam; e isto foi referido a Abimelec.
26 Gaal son of Obed, with his brothers, happened to pass through Shechem and win the confidence ofthe leaders of Shechem.	26 Ora Gaal, filho de Obed, foi com seus irmãos e passou a Siquém. À sua chegada, os habitantes de Siquém, animados,
27 These went out into the countryside to harvest their vineyards; they trod the grapes and made merryand went into the temple of their god. They ate and drank there and cursed Abimelech.	27 saíram pelos campos, devastando as vinhas e calcando os cachos; (depois) formados coros de cantores, entraram no templo do seu deus, e, enquanto comiam e bebiam, amaldiçoavam Abimelec.
28 Gaal son of Obed said, 'Who is Abimelech, and what is Shechem, for us to be his slaves? Should notJerubbaal's son and his lieutenant, Zebul, be serving the men of Hamor, father of Shechem? Why should we behis slaves?	28 Gaal, filho de Obed, disse: Quem é Abimelec, e que (cidade) é Siquém, para que lhe estejamos sujeitos? Não é ele filho de Jerobaal, e não constituiu Zebul, seu servo, príncipe sobre os descendentes de Emor pai de Siquém? Por que razão pois o serviremos?
29 Who wil put this people under my command, so that I can expel Abimelech? I should say to him,"Reinforce your army and come out!" '	29 Oxalá que alguém me desse o mando deste povo, para eu exterminar Abimelec. E foi dito a Abimelec: Junta um exército numeroso, e vem.
30 Zebul the governor of the town was told what Gaal son of Obed had said, and he was furious.	30 Zebul, governador da cidade, tendo ouvido as palavras de Gaal, filho de Obed, ficou em extremo irado
31 He sent messengers secretly to Abimelech to say, 'Look! Gaal son of Obed has come to Shechemwith his brothers, and they are stirring up the town against you.	31 e enviou secretamente mensageiros a Abimelec, a dizer-lhe: Gaal, filho de Obed, veio a Siquém com seus irmãos, e anda sublevando a cidade contra ti.
32 So, move under cover of dark, you and the men you have with you, and take up concealed positions inthe countryside;	32 Portanto, sai de noite, com a gente que tens contigo, e deixa-te estar escondido no campo;
33 then in the morning at sunrise, break cover and rush on the town. When Gaal and his supporters comeout to meet you, treat them as occasion offers.'	33 pela manhã cedo, ao nascer do sol, lança-te sobre a cidade; quando ele sair contra ti, com a sua gente, faz-lhe o que puderes.
34 So Abimelech set off under cover of dark with al his own supporters and took up concealed positionsover against Shechem, in four groups.	34 Abimelech pois levantou-se de noite, com todo o seu exército, e pôs emboscadas em quatro lugares junto de Siquém.
35 As Gaal son of Obed was coming out and pausing at the entrance of the town gate, Abimelech and hissupporters rose from their ambush.	35 Gaal, filho de Obed, saiu, e fez alto à entrada da porta da cidade. (Imediatamente) Abimelec saiu do lugar das emboscadas com todo o exército.
36 Gaal saw these men and said to Zebul, 'Look, there are men coming down from the tops of themountains!' Zebul answered, 'You mistake the shadow of the mountains for men.'	36 Quando Gaal viu aquela gente, disse a Zebul: Eis uma multidão que desce dos montes. Zebul respondeu-lhe: As sombras dos montes é que parecem homens: estás enganado com esta ilusão.
37 But Gaal insisted, 'Look, there are men coming down from the Navel of the Earth and another group iscoming from the direction of the Diviners' Oak.'	37 Gaal replicou: eis uma multidão que desce dos mais altos cimos, e um esquadrão que vem pelo caminho do Carvalho dos Adivinhos.
38 Zebul then said, 'Where are your mouthings now about "Who is Abimelech, for us to be his slaves?"Are not these the men you made light of? Sally out, then, and fight him.'	38 Zebul disse-lhe; Onde está agora a tua boca, com que dizias: Quem é Abimelec, para lhe estarmos sujeitos? Não é este povo que tu desprezavas? Sai e combate contra ele.
39 Gaal sal ied out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and engaged Abimelech.	39 Saiu Gaal, à vista de todo o povo de Siquém, e combateu conta Abimelec,
40 Abimelech drove Gaal off, who turned tail, many of his men falling dead before they could reach thegate.	40 que o foi seguindo na fuga e o constrangeu a entrar na cidade, tendo morrido muitos dos homens (de Gaal) até às portas dela.
41 Abimelech then stayed at Aruma, and Zebul expelled Gaal and his brothers and prevented them fromliving in Shechem.	41 Abimelec deteve-se em Ruma; Zebul porém lançou fora da cidade Gaal e os seus companheiros, que não puderam mais permanecer nela.
42 Next day, when the people went out into the countryside, Abimelech was told of this.	42 Ao outro dia o povo saiu ao campo. Tendo sabido isto Abimelec,
43 He took his men, divided them into three groups and lay in wait in the fields. When he saw the peopleleaving the town, he bore down on them and slaughtered them.	43 tomou o seu exército e dividiu-o em três batalhões, dispondo emboscadas nos campos. Ao ver que o povo saía da cidade, pôs-se em movimento e deu sobre eles,
44 While Abimelech and his group rushed forward and took position at the entrance to the town gate, thetwo other groups fel on everyone in the fields and slaughtered them.	44 com o seu batalhão, combatendo e sitiando a cidade; os outros dois batalhões perseguiam os (que estavam) dispersos pelo campo.
45 Al that day Abimelech attacked the town. He stormed it and slaughtered the people inside, razed thetown and sowed it with salt.	45 Abimelec durante todo aquele dia esteve combatendo a cidade; tomou-a e matou os seus habitantes; depois arrasou-a e semeou-a de sal.
46 On hearing this, al the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem took refuge in the crypt of the temple ofEl-Berith.	46 Tendo ouvido isto os que habitavam na torre de Siquém retiraram-se para o templo do seu deus Berit.
47 As soon as Abimelech heard that the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem had al gathered there,	47 Abimelec, ouvindo dizer que os homens da torre de Siquém estavam nela todos apinhados,
48 he went up Mount Zalmon with al his men. Then taking an axe in his hands, he cut off the branch of atree, picked it up and put it on his shoulder, and said to the men with him, 'Hurry and do what you have seen medo.'	48 subiu ao monte Selmon com toda a sua gente. Tomando um machado, cortou um ramo da árvore, e, levando-o ao ombro, disse aos companheiros: Fazei depressa o que me vêdes fazer.
49 Each of his men similarly cut off a branch; then, following Abimelech, they piled the branches over thecrypt and set it on fire over those who were inside; so that al the people in Migdal-Shechem died too, about athousand men and women.	49 Cortando, pois, à porfia, ramos de árvores, seguiram o chefe. Cercando a fortaleza, puseram-lhe fogo, e assim aconteceu que, por causa do fumo e do fogo, morreram mil pessoas, tanto homens como mulheres, que habitavam na torre de Siquém.
50 Abimelech then marched on Thebez, besieged it and captured it.	50 Partindo dali Abimelec foi à cidade de Tebes, que sitiou e tomou.
51 In the middle of the town there was a fortified tower in which al the men and women and al theleading men of the town took refuge. They locked the door behind them and climbed up to the roof of the tower.	51 Havia no meio da cidade uma torre alta, na qual se tinham refugiado tanto homens como mulheres, e todos os principais da cidade; fechada fortemente a porta, subiram ao alto da torre, para se defenderem.
52 Abimelech reached the tower and attacked it. As he was approaching the door of the tower to set it onfire,	52 Abimelec, chegando-se ao pé da torre, atacou-a e aproximou-se da porta, para lhe pôr fogo.
53 a woman threw down a mil stone on his head and cracked his skull.	53 Então uma mulher, lançando de cima um pedaço de mó, feriu Abimelec na cabeça e fracturou-lhe o crânio.
54 He instantly cal ed his young armour-bearer and said, 'Draw your sword and kil me, so that it wil notbe said of me that "A woman kil ed him".' His armour-bearer ran him through, and he died.	54 Ele chamou imediatamente o seu escudeiro e disse-lhe: Desembainha a tua espada e mata-me, para que se não diga que fui morto por uma mulher. O jovem o trespassou, e Abimelec morreu.
55 When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they dispersed to their homes.	55 Morto Abimelec, todos os filhos de Israel, que estavam com ele, voltaram para as suas casas.
56 Thus God made to recoil on Abimelech the evil he had done his father by murdering his seventybrothers,	56 Assim pagou Deus a Abimelec o mal que tinha feito a seu pai, matando os seus setenta irmãos.
57 and all the evil that the men of Shechem had done God made recoil on their heads too. And so thecurse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came true for them.	57 E assim também foi pago aos Siquemitas o mal que tinham feito, e caiu sobre eles a maldição de Joatão, filho de Jerobaal.
