1 Abimelech son of Jerubbaal confronted his mother's brothers at Shechem and, to them and to the wholeclan of his maternal grandfather's family, he said,	1 Abimélek, fils de Yéroubbaal, se rendit à Sichem auprès des frères de sa mère. Il leur dit, ainsi qu’à toute la famille de son grand-père maternel:
2 'Please put this question to the leading men of Shechem: Which is better for you: to be ruled by seventypeople -- al Jerubbaal's sons -- or to be ruled by one? Remember too that I am your own flesh and bone.'	2 “Posez donc cette question aux messieurs de Sichem: Préférez-vous être gouvernés par 70 hommes, tous les fils de Yéroubbaal, ou n’avoir qu’un seul maître? Souvenez-vous donc que je suis de votre sang.”
3 His mother's brothers said al this on his behalf to al the leading men of Shechem, and their feelingsswayed them to follow Abimelech, since they argued, 'He is our brother.'	3 Les frères de sa mère rapportèrent toutes ces paroles aux messieurs de Sichem, et ils se décidèrent en faveur d’Abimélek, car ils se disaient: “C’est notre frère.”
4 So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith, and with this Abimelech paidviolent adventurers to fol ow him.	4 Ils lui donnèrent donc 70 sicles d’argent, pris dans le temple de Baal-Bérit, et avec cet argent Abimélek paya des voyous, des aventuriers qui se mirent à son service.
5 He then went to his father's house at Ophrah and put his brothers, Jerubbaal's seventy sons, to deathon one and the same stone. Jotham, however, Jerubbaal's youngest son, escaped by going into hiding.	5 Il se rendit alors à Ofra, dans la maison de son père, et massacra ses frères, les fils de Yéroubbaal: les 70 furent exécutés sur la même pierre. Le plus jeune fils de Yéroubbaal, Yotam, s’était caché et il échappa.
6 All the leading men of Shechem and al Beth-Mil o then met and proclaimed Abimelech king at the oakof the cultic stone at Shechem.	6 Alors tous les notables de Sichem et de Beth-Millo se réunirent et proclamèrent roi Abimélek, près du Chêne-de-la-Stèle qui est à Sichem.
7 News of this was brought to Jotham. He went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted at thetop of his voice: Hear me, leaders of Shechem, so that God may also hear you!	7 On annonça la chose à Yotam. Il alla se poster au sommet du mont Garizim et s’écria d’une voix forte: “Écoutez-moi, notables de Sichem, et que Dieu lui-même vous écoute!
8 One day the trees went out to anoint a king to rule them. They said to the olive tree, 'Be our king!'	8 Un jour les arbres se mirent en route: ils voulaient se donner un roi. Ils dirent à l’olivier: ‘Sois notre roi!’
9 The olive tree replied, 'Must I forgo my oil which gives honour to gods and men, to stand and sway overthe trees?'	9 Mais l’olivier leur répondit: ‘Vais-je laisser là mon huile, si précieuse pour les dieux et les hommes, pour aller me balancer au-dessus des autres arbres?’
10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'You come and be our king!'	10 “Les arbres se tournèrent donc vers le figuier: ‘Viens, toi, tu seras notre roi!’
11 The fig tree replied, 'Must I forgo my sweetness, forgo my excel ent fruit, to go and sway over thetrees?'	11 Le figuier leur répondit: ‘Vais-je renoncer à la douceur de mes fruits si appréciés pour aller me balancer au-dessus des autres arbres?’
12 Then the trees said to the vine, 'You come and be our king!'	12 “Cette fois les arbres se tournèrent vers la vigne: Viens, toi, tu seras notre roi!
13 The vine replied, 'Must I forgo my wine which cheers gods and men, to go and sway over the trees?'	13 Mais la vigne leur répondit: Vais-je renoncer à mon raisin, qui réjouit les dieux et les hommes, pour aller me balancer au-dessus des arbres?
14 Then the trees al said to the thorn bush, 'You come and be our king!'	14 “Alors tous les arbres vinrent trouver le buisson d’épines: ‘Viens, toi, tu seras notre roi!’
15 And the thorn bush replied to the trees, 'If you are anointing me in good faith to be your king, come andshelter in my shade. But, if not, fire will come out of the thorn bush and devour the cedars of Lebanon.'	15 Et le buisson d’épines répondit aux arbres: ‘Si vraiment vous voulez me faire roi et que je règne sur vous, venez et restez à mon ombre. Sinon, un feu sortira du buisson d’épines et dévorera jusqu’au cèdre du Liban.’
16 'Now then, if you have acted in sincerity and good faith in making Abimelech king, if you have dealthonourably with Jerubbaal and his family, and have treated him as his actions deserved,	16 “Et vous maintenant, avez-vous agi avec sincérité et honnêteté en faisant roi Abimélek? Vous êtes-vous bien conduits envers Yéroubbaal et sa famille? L’avez-vous traité comme il le méritait?
17 my father having fought for you, risked his life and rescued you from the power of Midian,	17 Mon père n’a-t-il pas combattu pour vous? N’a-t-il pas risqué sa vie pour vous? Ne vous a-t-il pas délivrés de la main des Madianites?
18 and you today having risen up against my father's family, murdered his sons -- seventy of them on oneand the same stone -- and appointed Abimelech, his slave-girl's son, to rule the leading men of Shechem,because he is your brother!-	18 “Or vous, aujourd’hui, vous vous êtes dressés contre la famille de mon père, vous avez tué ses fils, au nombre de 70, sur une même pierre. Et vous avez fait d’Abimélek, le fils d’une servante, le roi des messieurs de Sichem, parce qu’il est de votre sang.
19 if, I say, you have acted in sincerity and good faith towards Jerubbaal and his family, then mayAbimelech be your joy and may you be his!	19 Si donc aujourd’hui vous vous êtes montrés fidèles et honnêtes envers Yéroubbaal et sa maison, je vous souhaite qu’Abimélek fasse votre bonheur et que vous, vous fassiez le sien!
20 If not, may fire come out of Abimelech and devour the leading men of Shechem and Beth-Mil o, andfire come out of the leading men of Shechem and Beth-Mil o to devour Abimelech!'	20 Sinon, qu’un feu sorte d’Abimélek et dévore les gens de Sichem et de Beth-Millo, et qu’un feu sorte des gens de Sichem et Beth-Millo et dévore Abimélek.”
21 Jotham then took to his heels; he fled and made his way to Beer; and there he stayed, to be out of hisbrother Abimelech's reach.	21 Yotam prit alors la fuite et se rendit à Béer; il séjourna là car il avait peur de son frère Abimélek.
22 Abimelech ruled Israel for three years.	22 Durant trois ans Abimélek gouverna Israël.
23 God then sent a spirit of discord between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders ofShechem betrayed Abimelech.	23 Mais Dieu envoya un esprit de discorde entre Abimélek et les habitants de Sichem, et ceux-ci trahirent Abimélek.
24 And this was so that the crime committed against Jerubbaal's seventy sons should be avenged, andtheir blood recoil on their brother Abimelech who had murdered them, and on those leaders of Shechem whohad helped him to murder his brothers.	24 C’est ainsi que le crime commis contre les 70 fils de Yéroubbaal allait être vengé; leur sang retomba sur Abimélek, leur frère, qui les avait tués, ainsi que sur les gens de Sichem qui l’avaient aidé à tuer ses frères.
25 The leaders of Shechem put men to ambush him on the mountain tops, and these robbed anyonetravel ing their way. Abimelech was told of this.	25 Pour lui faire du tort, les gens de Sichem placèrent en embuscade, sur les cols de la montagne, des gens qui dévalisaient tous ceux qui passaient près d’eux sur le chemin; on rapporta cela à Abimélek.
26 Gaal son of Obed, with his brothers, happened to pass through Shechem and win the confidence ofthe leaders of Shechem.	26 Gaal, fils d’Obed, passa alors avec ses frères. Ils arrivèrent à Sichem et gagnèrent la confiance des gens de Sichem.
27 These went out into the countryside to harvest their vineyards; they trod the grapes and made merryand went into the temple of their god. They ate and drank there and cursed Abimelech.	27 Ils sortirent dans la campagne pour vendanger leurs vignes, ils écrasèrent leurs raisins et firent la fête. Puis ils entrèrent dans le temple de leurs dieux, ils mangèrent et ils burent, et ils maudirent Abimélek.
28 Gaal son of Obed said, 'Who is Abimelech, and what is Shechem, for us to be his slaves? Should notJerubbaal's son and his lieutenant, Zebul, be serving the men of Hamor, father of Shechem? Why should we behis slaves?	28 Gaal fils d’Obed dit alors: “Qui est cet Abimélek, et qu’est-ce que Sichem, pour que nous soyons à son service? Le fils de Yéroubbaal, tout comme son lieutenant Zéboul, n’étaient que les serviteurs de Hamor, père de Sichem!
29 Who wil put this people under my command, so that I can expel Abimelech? I should say to him,"Reinforce your army and come out!" '	29 Si seulement j’étais le chef de ce peuple, je chasserais Abimélek et je lui dirais: ‘Abimélek, viens donc ici avec toute ton armée!’ ”
30 Zebul the governor of the town was told what Gaal son of Obed had said, and he was furious.	30 Les paroles de Gaal, fils d’Obed, mirent Zéboul, gouverneur de la ville, dans une grande colère.
31 He sent messengers secretly to Abimelech to say, 'Look! Gaal son of Obed has come to Shechemwith his brothers, and they are stirring up the town against you.	31 Il envoya discrètement des messagers à Abimélek pour lui dire: “Gaal, fils d’Obed, vient d’arriver à Sichem avec ses frères, et ils soulèvent la ville contre toi.
32 So, move under cover of dark, you and the men you have with you, and take up concealed positions inthe countryside;	32 Lève-toi donc de nuit avec le peuple qui t’accompagne, et cache-toi dans la campagne.
33 then in the morning at sunrise, break cover and rush on the town. When Gaal and his supporters comeout to meet you, treat them as occasion offers.'	33 Le matin, au lever du soleil, tu te lèveras et tu te jetteras sur la ville. Et lorsque Gaal et ceux qui sont avec lui sortiront à ta rencontre, tu feras comme la situation te le permettra.”
34 So Abimelech set off under cover of dark with al his own supporters and took up concealed positionsover against Shechem, in four groups.	34 De nuit donc, Abimélek et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui se levèrent, et ils se mirent en embuscade autour de Sichem, répartis en quatre groupes.
35 As Gaal son of Obed was coming out and pausing at the entrance of the town gate, Abimelech and hissupporters rose from their ambush.	35 Alors que Gaal, fils d’Obed, venait se poster à l’entrée de la ville, Abimélek et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui se levèrent de leur cachette.
36 Gaal saw these men and said to Zebul, 'Look, there are men coming down from the tops of themountains!' Zebul answered, 'You mistake the shadow of the mountains for men.'	36 En voyant cette troupe, Gaal dit à Zéboul: “Voici des gens qui descendent du haut des montagnes.” Zéboul lui répondit: “Tu prends sûrement pour des hommes les ombres de la montagne.”
37 But Gaal insisted, 'Look, there are men coming down from the Navel of the Earth and another group iscoming from the direction of the Diviners' Oak.'	37 Gaal reprit la parole et dit: “Voici bien une troupe qui descend du cœur du pays. Un autre groupe arrive par le chemin de l’Arbre-des-Astrologues.”
38 Zebul then said, 'Where are your mouthings now about "Who is Abimelech, for us to be his slaves?"Are not these the men you made light of? Sally out, then, and fight him.'	38 Alors Zéboul reprit: “As-tu donc perdu cette langue avec laquelle tu disais: ‘Qui est Abimélek, pour que nous soyons à son service?’ Voici ces gens que tu as méprisés. Sors maintenant, et lutte contre lui!”
39 Gaal sal ied out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and engaged Abimelech.	39 Gaal sortit donc à la tête des gens de Sichem et livra combat à Abimélek.
40 Abimelech drove Gaal off, who turned tail, many of his men falling dead before they could reach thegate.	40 Mais Abimélek le poursuivit et Gaal s’enfuit devant lui: beaucoup tombèrent avant d’atteindre la porte.
41 Abimelech then stayed at Aruma, and Zebul expelled Gaal and his brothers and prevented them fromliving in Shechem.	41 Abimélek séjourna alors à Arouma; quant à Zéboul, il chassa Gaal et ses frères et les empêcha de revenir à Sichem.
42 Next day, when the people went out into the countryside, Abimelech was told of this.	42 Le lendemain, le peuple devait sortir dans la campagne. On informa Abimélek.
43 He took his men, divided them into three groups and lay in wait in the fields. When he saw the peopleleaving the town, he bore down on them and slaughtered them.	43 Il rassembla ses hommes et les partagea en trois groupes, puis il se mit en embuscade dans la campagne. Dès qu’il aperçut les gens qui sortaient de la ville, il se jeta sur eux.
44 While Abimelech and his group rushed forward and took position at the entrance to the town gate, thetwo other groups fel on everyone in the fields and slaughtered them.	44 Abimélek avec ses hommes courut se poster à l’entrée de la porte de la ville. Les deux autres corps pendant ce temps s’élancèrent contre tous ceux qui étaient dans la campagne et ils les écrasèrent.
45 Al that day Abimelech attacked the town. He stormed it and slaughtered the people inside, razed thetown and sowed it with salt.	45 Durant tout ce jour Abimélek fit l’assaut de la ville, il s’en empara et massacra tous ses habitants. Ensuite il rasa la ville et y sema du sel.
46 On hearing this, al the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem took refuge in the crypt of the temple ofEl-Berith.	46 Tous les gens de la Tour de Sichem, en apprenant cela, se réfugièrent dans la crypte du temple d’El-Bérit.
47 As soon as Abimelech heard that the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem had al gathered there,	47 Quand on fit savoir à Abimélek, que tous les gens de la Tour de Sichem s’y étaient rassemblés,
48 he went up Mount Zalmon with al his men. Then taking an axe in his hands, he cut off the branch of atree, picked it up and put it on his shoulder, and said to the men with him, 'Hurry and do what you have seen medo.'	48 il prit une hache à double tranchant avec laquelle il coupa une branche d’arbre, il la souleva et la mit sur son épaule. Puis il dit à ceux qui l’accompagnaient: “Vous avez vu ce que j’ai fait, dépêchez-vous de faire comme moi.”
49 Each of his men similarly cut off a branch; then, following Abimelech, they piled the branches over thecrypt and set it on fire over those who were inside; so that al the people in Migdal-Shechem died too, about athousand men and women.	49 Chacun de ses hommes coupa donc une branche. Ils se mirent en route derrière Abimélek et disposèrent les branches sur la crypte, puis ils mirent le feu et incendièrent cette crypte. C’est ainsi que moururent tous les gens de la Tour de Sichem: près d’un millier d’hommes et de femmes.
50 Abimelech then marched on Thebez, besieged it and captured it.	50 Abimélek se rendit à Tébès; il l’assiégea et s’en empara.
51 In the middle of the town there was a fortified tower in which al the men and women and al theleading men of the town took refuge. They locked the door behind them and climbed up to the roof of the tower.	51 Mais il y avait à l’intérieur de la ville une tour fortifiée dans laquelle se réfugièrent, hommes et femmes, tous les notables de la ville. Ils fermèrent derrière eux la porte et montèrent sur le toit de la tour.
52 Abimelech reached the tower and attacked it. As he was approaching the door of the tower to set it onfire,	52 Abimélek arriva en force au pied de la tour et s’avança jusqu’à la porte de la tour pour y mettre le feu.
53 a woman threw down a mil stone on his head and cracked his skull.	53 C’est alors qu’une femme lui lança une meule sur la tête et lui fracassa le crâne.
54 He instantly cal ed his young armour-bearer and said, 'Draw your sword and kil me, so that it wil notbe said of me that "A woman kil ed him".' His armour-bearer ran him through, and he died.	54 Aussitôt il appela son écuyer et lui dit: “Tire ton épée et tue-moi! Il ne faut pas qu’on dise de moi: C’est une femme qui l’a tué.” Alors son écuyer le transperça et il mourut.
55 When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they dispersed to their homes.	55 Quand les Israélites virent qu’Abimélek était mort, ils s’en retournèrent chacun chez soi.
56 Thus God made to recoil on Abimelech the evil he had done his father by murdering his seventybrothers,	56 Ainsi Dieu rendit à Abimélek le mal qu’il avait fait à son père en tuant ses 70 frères.
57 and all the evil that the men of Shechem had done God made recoil on their heads too. And so thecurse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came true for them.	57 Et Dieu fit retomber sur les hommes de Sichem toute leur méchanceté. C’est ainsi que se réalisa pour eux la malédiction de Yotam, fils de Yéroubbaal.
