NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Abimelech son of Jerubbaal confronted his mother's brothers at Shechem and, to them and to the wholeclan of his maternal grandfather's family, he said,	1 Abimélek, fils de Yerubbaal, s'en vint à Sichem auprès des frères de sa mère et il leur adressa cesparoles, ainsi qu'à tout le clan de la maison paternelle de sa mère:
2 'Please put this question to the leading men of Shechem: Which is better for you: to be ruled by seventypeople -- al Jerubbaal's sons -- or to be ruled by one? Remember too that I am your own flesh and bone.'	2 "Faites donc entendre ceci, je vous prie, aux notables de Sichem: Que vaut-il mieux pour vous? Avoirpour maîtres 70 personnes, tous les fils de Yerubbaal, ou n'en avoir qu'un seul? Souvenez-vous d'ailleurs que jesuis, moi, de vos os et de votre chair!"
3 His mother's brothers said al this on his behalf to al the leading men of Shechem, and their feelingsswayed them to follow Abimelech, since they argued, 'He is our brother.'	3 Les frères de sa mère parlèrent de lui à tous les notables de Sichem dans les mêmes termes, et leurcoeur pencha pour Abimélek, car ils se disaient: "C'est notre frère!"
4 So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith, and with this Abimelech paidviolent adventurers to fol ow him.	4 Ils lui donnèrent donc 70 sicles d'argent du temple de Baal-Berit et Abimélek s'en servit poursoudoyer des gens de rien, des aventuriers, qui s'attachèrent à lui.
5 He then went to his father's house at Ophrah and put his brothers, Jerubbaal's seventy sons, to deathon one and the same stone. Jotham, however, Jerubbaal's youngest son, escaped by going into hiding.	5 Il se rendit alors à la maison de son père à Ophra et il massacra ses frères, les fils de Yerubbaal, 70hommes, sur une même pierre. Yotam cependant, le plus jeune fils de Yerubbaal, échappa, car il s'était caché.
6 All the leading men of Shechem and al Beth-Mil o then met and proclaimed Abimelech king at the oakof the cultic stone at Shechem.	6 Puis tous les notables de Sichem et tout Bet-Millo se réunirent et ils proclamèrent roi Abimélek prèsdu chêne de la stèle qui est à Sichem.
7 News of this was brought to Jotham. He went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim and shouted at thetop of his voice: Hear me, leaders of Shechem, so that God may also hear you!	7 On l'annonça à Yotam. Il vint se poster sur le sommet du mont Garizim et il leur cria à haute voix:"Ecoutez-moi, notables de Sichem, pour que Dieu vous écoute!
8 One day the trees went out to anoint a king to rule them. They said to the olive tree, 'Be our king!'	8 Un jour les arbres se mirent en chemin pour oindre un roi qui régnerait sur eux. Ils dirent à l'olivier:Sois notre roi!
9 The olive tree replied, 'Must I forgo my oil which gives honour to gods and men, to stand and sway overthe trees?'	9 L'olivier leur répondit: Faudra-t-il que je renonce à mon huile, qui rend honneur aux dieux et auxhommes, pour aller me balancer au-dessus des arbres?
10 Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'You come and be our king!'	10 Alors les arbres dirent au figuier: Viens, toi, sois notre roi!
11 The fig tree replied, 'Must I forgo my sweetness, forgo my excel ent fruit, to go and sway over thetrees?'	11 Le figuier leur répondit: Faudra-t-il que je renonce à ma douceur et à mon excellent fruit, pour allerme balancer au-dessus des arbres?
12 Then the trees said to the vine, 'You come and be our king!'	12 Les arbres dirent alors à la vigne: Viens, toi, sois notre roi!
13 The vine replied, 'Must I forgo my wine which cheers gods and men, to go and sway over the trees?'	13 La vigne leur répondit: Faudra-t-il que je renonce à mon vin, qui réjouit les dieux et les hommes,pour aller me balancer au-dessus des arbres?
14 Then the trees al said to the thorn bush, 'You come and be our king!'	14 Tous les arbres dirent alors au buisson d'épines: Viens, toi, sois notre roi!
15 And the thorn bush replied to the trees, 'If you are anointing me in good faith to be your king, come andshelter in my shade. But, if not, fire will come out of the thorn bush and devour the cedars of Lebanon.'	15 Et le buisson d'épines répondit aux arbres: Si c'est de bonne foi que vous m'oignez pour régner survous,
16 'Now then, if you have acted in sincerity and good faith in making Abimelech king, if you have dealthonourably with Jerubbaal and his family, and have treated him as his actions deserved,	16 "Ainsi donc, si c'est de bonne foi et en toute loyauté que vous avez agi et que vous avez fait roiAbimélek, si vous vous êtes bien conduits envers Yerubbaal et sa maison, si vous l'avez traité selon le mérite deses action,
17 my father having fought for you, risked his life and rescued you from the power of Midian,	17 alors que mon père a combattu pour vous, qu'il a exposé sa vie, qu'il vous a délivrés de la main deMadiân,
18 and you today having risen up against my father's family, murdered his sons -- seventy of them on oneand the same stone -- and appointed Abimelech, his slave-girl's son, to rule the leading men of Shechem,because he is your brother!-	18 vous, aujourd'hui, vous vous êtes levés contre la maison de mon père, vous avez massacré ses fils, 70hommes sur une même pierre, et vous avez établi roi sur les notables de Sichem Abimélek, le fils de son esclave,parce qu'il est votre frère! --
19 if, I say, you have acted in sincerity and good faith towards Jerubbaal and his family, then mayAbimelech be your joy and may you be his!	19 si donc c'est de bonne foi et en toute loyauté qu'aujourd'hui vous avez agi envers Yerubbaal et enverssa maison, alors qu'Abimélek fasse votre joie et vous la sienne!
20 If not, may fire come out of Abimelech and devour the leading men of Shechem and Beth-Mil o, andfire come out of the leading men of Shechem and Beth-Mil o to devour Abimelech!'	20 Sinon, qu'un feu sorte d'Abimélek et qu'il dévore les notables de Sichem et de Bet-Millo, et qu'un feusorte des notables de Sichem et Bet-Millo pour dévorer Abimélek!"
21 Jotham then took to his heels; he fled and made his way to Beer; and there he stayed, to be out of hisbrother Abimelech's reach.	21 Puis Yotam prit la fuite, il se sauva et se rendit à Béer, où il s'établit pour échapper à son frèreAbimélek.
22 Abimelech ruled Israel for three years.	22 Abimélek exerça le pouvoir pendant trois ans sur Israël.
23 God then sent a spirit of discord between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders ofShechem betrayed Abimelech.	23 Puis Dieu envoya un esprit de discorde entre Abimélek et les notables de Sichem, et les notables deSichem trahirent Abimélek.
24 And this was so that the crime committed against Jerubbaal's seventy sons should be avenged, andtheir blood recoil on their brother Abimelech who had murdered them, and on those leaders of Shechem whohad helped him to murder his brothers.	24 C'était afin que le crime commis contre les 70 fils de Yerubbaal fût vengé et que leur sang retombâtsur Abimélek leur frère, qui les avait massacrés, ainsi que sur les notables de Sichem qui l'avaient aidé àmassacrer ses frères.
25 The leaders of Shechem put men to ambush him on the mountain tops, and these robbed anyonetravel ing their way. Abimelech was told of this.	25 Les notables de Sichem placèrent donc contre lui des embuscades au sommet des montagnes et ilsdévalisaient quiconque passait près d'eux par le chemin. On le fit savoir à Abimélek.
26 Gaal son of Obed, with his brothers, happened to pass through Shechem and win the confidence ofthe leaders of Shechem.	26 Gaal, fils d'Obed, accompagné de ses frères, vint à passer par Sichem et il gagna la confiance desnotables de Sichem.
27 These went out into the countryside to harvest their vineyards; they trod the grapes and made merryand went into the temple of their god. They ate and drank there and cursed Abimelech.	27 Ceux-ci sortirent dans la campagne pour vendanger leurs vignes, ils foulèrent le raisin, organisèrentdes réjouissances et entrèrent dans le temple de leur dieu. Ils y mangèrent et burent et maudirent Abimélek.
28 Gaal son of Obed said, 'Who is Abimelech, and what is Shechem, for us to be his slaves? Should notJerubbaal's son and his lieutenant, Zebul, be serving the men of Hamor, father of Shechem? Why should we behis slaves?	28 Alors Gaal, fils d'Obed, s'écria: "Qui est Abimélek, et qu'est-ce que Sichem, pour que nous luisoyons asservis? Ne serait-ce pas au fils de Yerubbaal et à Zebul, son lieutenant, de servir les gens de Hamor,père de Sichem? Pourquoi lui serions-nous asservis, nous?
29 Who wil put this people under my command, so that I can expel Abimelech? I should say to him,"Reinforce your army and come out!" '	29 Qui me mettra ce peuple dans la main, afin que je chasse Abimélek, et je lui dirais: Renforce tonarmée et sors!"
30 Zebul the governor of the town was told what Gaal son of Obed had said, and he was furious.	30 Zebul, gouverneur de la ville, apprit les propos de Gaal, fils d'Obed, et il en fut irrité.
31 He sent messengers secretly to Abimelech to say, 'Look! Gaal son of Obed has come to Shechemwith his brothers, and they are stirring up the town against you.	31 Il envoya en secret des messagers vers Abimélek, pour dire: "Voici que Gaal, fils d'Obed, avec sesfrères, est arrivé à Sichem, et ils excitent la ville contre toi.
32 So, move under cover of dark, you and the men you have with you, and take up concealed positions inthe countryside;	32 En conséquence, lève-toi de nuit, toi et les gens que tu as avec toi, et mets-toi en embuscade dans lacampagne,
33 then in the morning at sunrise, break cover and rush on the town. When Gaal and his supporters comeout to meet you, treat them as occasion offers.'	33 puis, le matin, au lever du soleil, tu surgiras et tu t'élanceras contre la ville. Quand Gaal et les gensqui sont avec lui sortiront à ta rencontre, tu les traiteras comme tu pourras."
34 So Abimelech set off under cover of dark with al his own supporters and took up concealed positionsover against Shechem, in four groups.	34 Abimélek se mit donc en route de nuit avec tous les gens qui étaient avec lui et ils s'embusquèrent enface de Sichem, en quatre groupes.
35 As Gaal son of Obed was coming out and pausing at the entrance of the town gate, Abimelech and hissupporters rose from their ambush.	35 Comme Gaal, fils d'Obed, sortait et faisait halte à l'entrée de la porte de la ville, Abimélek et les gensqui étaient avec lui surgirent de leur embuscade.
36 Gaal saw these men and said to Zebul, 'Look, there are men coming down from the tops of themountains!' Zebul answered, 'You mistake the shadow of the mountains for men.'	36 Gaal vit cette troupe et il dit à Zebul: "Voici des gens qui descendent du sommet des montagnes" --"C'est l'ombre des monts, lui répondit Zebul, et tu la prends pour des hommes."
37 But Gaal insisted, 'Look, there are men coming down from the Navel of the Earth and another group iscoming from the direction of the Diviners' Oak.'	37 Gaal reprit encore: "Voici des gens qui descendent du côté du Nombril de la Terre, tandis qu'un autregroupe arrive par le chemin du Chêne des Devins."
38 Zebul then said, 'Where are your mouthings now about "Who is Abimelech, for us to be his slaves?"Are not these the men you made light of? Sally out, then, and fight him.'	38 Zebul lui dit alors: "Qu'as-tu fait de ta langue? Toi qui disais: Qui est Abimélek pour que nous luisoyons asservis? Ne sont-ce pas là les gens que tu méprisais? Sors donc maintenant et livre-lui combat."
39 Gaal sal ied out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and engaged Abimelech.	39 Et Gaal sortit à la tête des notables de Sichem et il livra combat à Abimélek.
40 Abimelech drove Gaal off, who turned tail, many of his men falling dead before they could reach thegate.	40 Abimélek poursuivit Gaal, qui se sauva devant lui, et beaucoup de gens de celui-ci tombèrent mortsavant d'atteindre la porte.
41 Abimelech then stayed at Aruma, and Zebul expelled Gaal and his brothers and prevented them fromliving in Shechem.	41 Abimélek demeura alors à Aruma, et Zebul, chassant Gaal et ses frères, les empêcha d'habiter àSichem.
42 Next day, when the people went out into the countryside, Abimelech was told of this.	42 Le lendemain, le peuple sortit dans la campagne et Abimélek en fut informé.
43 He took his men, divided them into three groups and lay in wait in the fields. When he saw the peopleleaving the town, he bore down on them and slaughtered them.	43 Il prit ses gens, les partagea en trois groupes et se mit en embuscade dans les champs. Lorsqu'il vitles gens sortir de la ville, il surgit contre eux et les tailla en pièces.
44 While Abimelech and his group rushed forward and took position at the entrance to the town gate, thetwo other groups fel on everyone in the fields and slaughtered them.	44 Tandis qu'Abimélek et le groupe qui était avec lui s'élançaient et prenaient position à l'entrée de laporte de la ville, les deux autres groupes se jetèrent contre tous ceux qui étaient dans la campagne et lesmassacrèrent.
45 Al that day Abimelech attacked the town. He stormed it and slaughtered the people inside, razed thetown and sowed it with salt.	45 Toute la journée Abimélek donna l'assaut à la ville. L'ayant prise, il en massacra la population,détruisit la ville et y sema du sel.
46 On hearing this, al the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem took refuge in the crypt of the temple ofEl-Berith.	46 A cette nouvelle, les notables de Migdal-Sichem se rendirent tous dans la crypte du temple d'El-Berit.
47 As soon as Abimelech heard that the leading men inside Migdal-Shechem had al gathered there,	47 Dès qu'Abimélek eut appris que tous les notables de Migdal-Sichem s'y étaient rassemblés,
48 he went up Mount Zalmon with al his men. Then taking an axe in his hands, he cut off the branch of atree, picked it up and put it on his shoulder, and said to the men with him, 'Hurry and do what you have seen medo.'	48 il monta sur le mont Calmôn, lui et toute sa troupe. Prenant en mains une hache, il coupa unebranche d'arbre, qu'il souleva et chargea sur son épaule, en disant aux gens qui l'accompagnaient: "Ce que vousm'avez vu faire, vite, faites-le comme moi."
49 Each of his men similarly cut off a branch; then, following Abimelech, they piled the branches over thecrypt and set it on fire over those who were inside; so that al the people in Migdal-Shechem died too, about athousand men and women.	49 Tous ses gens se mirent donc à couper chacun une branche, puis ils suivirent Abimélek et, entassantles branches sur la crypte, ils la brûlèrent sur ceux qui s'y trouvaient. Tous les habitants de Migdal-Sichempérirent aussi, environ mille hommes et femmes.
50 Abimelech then marched on Thebez, besieged it and captured it.	50 Puis Abimélek marcha sur Tébèç, il l'assiégea et la prit.
51 In the middle of the town there was a fortified tower in which al the men and women and al theleading men of the town took refuge. They locked the door behind them and climbed up to the roof of the tower.	51 Il y avait là, au milieu de la ville, une tour fortifiée où se réfugièrent tous les hommes et femmes ettous les notables de la ville. Après avoir fermé la porte derrière eux, ils montèrent sur la terrasse de la tour.
52 Abimelech reached the tower and attacked it. As he was approaching the door of the tower to set it onfire,	52 Abimélek parvint jusqu'à la tour et il l'attaqua. Comme il s'approchait de la porte de la tour pour ymettre le feu,
53 a woman threw down a mil stone on his head and cracked his skull.	53 une femme lui lança une meule de moulin sur la tête et lui brisa le crâne.
54 He instantly cal ed his young armour-bearer and said, 'Draw your sword and kil me, so that it wil notbe said of me that "A woman kil ed him".' His armour-bearer ran him through, and he died.	54 Il appela aussitôt le jeune homme qui portait ses armes et lui dit: "Tire ton épée et tue-moi, pourqu'on ne dise pas de moi: C'est une femme qui l'a tué." Son écuyer le transperça et il mourut.
55 When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they dispersed to their homes.	55 Quand les gens d'Israël virent qu'Abimélek était mort, ils s'en retournèrent chacun chez soi.
56 Thus God made to recoil on Abimelech the evil he had done his father by murdering his seventybrothers,	56 Ainsi Dieu fit retomber sur Abimélek le mal qu'il avait fait à son père en égorgeant ses 70 frères.
57 and all the evil that the men of Shechem had done God made recoil on their heads too. And so thecurse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came true for them.	57 Et Dieu fit aussi retomber sur la tête des gens de Sichem toute leur méchanceté. Ainsi s'accomplit sureux la malédiction de Yotam, fils de Yerubbaal.
